BRAIN TRUST

A continuing series profiling one member of the Best Brains organization.

This month:

DAN BREYER

ONE GOOD INTERN DESERVES ANOTHER

One of the questions we get constantly is: "How can I apply to be an intern at Best Brains?" Frankly, it's not clear to us why anyone would want to. It's long hours of work for little or no pay. Still, there seems to be no lack of people lining up for the job.

One of the people who has done it is Dan Breyer, 28, known at BBI as "Big Dan." Breyer got started as a BBI intern in an unusual way.

"Well, my roommate Meshach Weber was an intern there, and one day last June they were going to do the outdoor shoot (the one that appeared in episode 816- Prince of Space) and he couldn't make it. So I filled in for him. I went and I worked my butt off, and I guess I made a good impression."

When asked to return, Breyer agreed, knowing the experience would help him in his future career. "I'm studying to get a degree in film making," he explains, "and while you learn a lot in school, you can only learn some of the the nuts and bolts stuff on a set. You learn the names of the equipment, you learn proper etiquette on a set, and a lot more."

So what is Breyer's typical day like?

"The day starts off with setting up craft services [that's movie set lingo for the table with snackies on it]. It's a job you have to maintain all day, and it gets hectic around noon when I break out the cheese."

The cheese?

"This staff has an addiction to nacho cheese dip. We go through a couple of jars in the course of a day." Breyer reports that just about anything from taco chips to pita bread is dipped in the stuff.

Besides feeding the staff's cheese fixation, on days when actual footage is shot, Breyer says interns will find themselves "helping to set lights, running cords everywhere. There's a lot of going up and down ladders. Once everything is in place, the interns' biggest job is to open and shut the doors on the satellite set."

What's the strangest thing he's ever been asked to do? Breyer does not hesitate to answer: "Being put into a little dress and told to stand there holding a spear."

Yes, that's Breyer as a "Roman Day Player" in episode 819- Invasion of the Neptune Men. He was seen again in that little dress in episode 820- Space Mutiny. "They said they needed a big intimidating-looking guy, and I *am* a big guy..." he chuckles.

All in all, Breyer (who is ending his internship and heading back to school next year) says the experience was a good one and the people at Best Brains very nice to work with.

"They only get a little cranky when they don't get their cheese," he says.
