RIP Tom Whitlock

TENNESSEE — Tom Whitlock, an Academy Award- and Golden Globe-winning songwriter died February 17 following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease, according to reports.

Whitlock was best known for “Take My Breath Away” and “Danger Zone.” which were both featured in the 1986 movie “Top Gun.” The former won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award in 1986 for best original song.

MSTies will remember snippets of the latter song sung in host segments in epispdes 602- INVASION U.S.A., 804- THE DEADLY MANTIS and 1109- YONGARY MONSTER FROM THE DEEP.

His hometown paper in Springfield, Mo., has the story.

RIP Gerald Fried

BRIDEPORT, CONN. — Composer Gerald Fried, who won an Emmy for his work on the landmark miniseries “Roots” and who worked on 1960s scores, from “Star Trek” to “Gilligan’s Island,” died of pneumonia Feb. 17 at St. Vincent’s Hospital here. He was 95.
