Mystery Science Theater 3000: 20th Anniversary Edition
Mystery Science Theater 3000: Vol. XX
Mystery Science Theater 3000: Vol. XIX [Limited Edition]
And reader Anakin Skywalker points out that Mystery Science Theater 3000, Vol. XIV is also on sale for $29.49.
Update: Reader snowdog adds that two more sets are on sale:
Mystery Science Theater 3000, Vol. XV – $28.99

So the moral of the story is…. don’t buy the sets right away because they’ll be cheaper in a year.

These are great prices for people who haven’t picked these sets up yet. Personally I’m in the camp where I always get them right away, and not just because of the Volume 10 thing (though that is a factor). I consider the aprox. $40 (or often even less) that you can get the sets for from Amazon on release day a very good price, and I would rather pay that and just have them than have to wait, possibly even several years as in the case of the 20th Ann. set, just to save another $10. There are plenty of TV shows and movies that I am willing to wait a fairly long time on in order to find them for much less on sale or used, but MST3K is definitely not one of them. Especially when it comes to the limited edition sets that included the figures, or the upcoming Gamera set. There was no way I was going to wait at all to get those.

There they go again… first slapping me around and making me pre-order something just because it has Sandy Frank on it. And now, the 1 other set I don’t have is $29.99. They will stop at nothing!
I found that Vol 10 set in a FYE some time after they were already $130+ on amazon. I saw it on the shelf on edge I thought I was seeing things. Then I turned it around and was never so happy to see a cheesy dinosaur. I yelled out into the mall at my dad who was waiting out there (and didn’t really give a ****…hahaha!) and waited in a long line with a smile on my face since these things usually don’t happen to me. Still, I’ve been patient and waited for lower prices. But if it even looks like something is on the way out I’m all over it, like of like the volume with the Gypsy figurine XIX. But amazon seems to have plenty of those now. :(

I managed to get Vol. 10 before the price skyrocketed. It’s vol. 9 that eludes me now, but Vol. 10 IS the main reason I ordered the Gamera set right away. The Gamera episodes were pulled from rotation pretty early back in the Comedy Central days. I’m afraid someone might change their mind.

@ “So the moral of the story is…. don’t buy the sets right away because they’ll be cheaper in a year”
I would like to follow that philosophy, but there are two problems with it in spite of the potential savings:
1) This is my favorite show of all time and I like to get the sets right away. Usually there’s a good enough discount on them before release to make waiting months for an even bigger discount seem not all that worthwhile and
2) If I had taken the “wait and see about the price” philosophy on MST3K I wouldn’t be the proud owner of the two sets that were discontinued just a few weeks after their release. Thanks to not waiting for a better price, I own Godzilla Vs. Megalon and Women Of The Prehistoric Planet episodes on DVD.
Invariably the price of DVDs drops significantly after they are out for a while when the sales flatten out to a trickle and with other DVDs I’m not as anxious to have right away I often wait for a price drop, but not MST3K. I don’t take chances with a show that has had so many problems just getting to DVD, especially since it’s my favorite show.

Fantastic! Just completed my collection with Volume XX! Not waiting for the Gamera boxed set to go on sale though. I pre-ordered that bad boy. Almost resorted to bootleg for those episodes. I’m taking no chances.

I had a similar experience to radioman970 with volume 10.1. I found it about 6 months after it was discontinued at a local cd/dvd store. Sticker price was $48. Ever since that, I’ve preordered, although I have the impression that SF has their stuff a little better together than Rhino, and would be quite suprised if another volume gets discontinued because of not properly securing the rights.

Yeah, a little annoying to see the price drops, but with so many out of print sets from the past I don’t take any chances so I buy them right away.
So far I have every officially released DVD of MST3K (except I sold off my single disc Manos since it was in the Essentials set) (And I even bought the Essentials set with the extra Shorts disc).

Thanks so much for letting us know. Went ahead and ordered Volume XX. Can’t wait to see Project Moonbase for the first time! And it’s been years since I’ve seen Sinbad. Great deal too.
