Coming Up Next at RiffTrax…

But really, would you want to eat, say, the ribs at a fondue restaurant? I ask you.

I kind of expected Kevin to do the ol’ Moe Howard on Mike and Bill, since he was getting so frustrated with them. That would’ve been funny,too..

Does Mike have a portrait of himself tucked away somewhere that ages instead of him?

Gah, I went with the literary reference instead of Highlander. I’ll go make fart noises for an hour to rebalance the scales. :silly:

Wouldn’t it be nice if MK&B did an actual bad movie for RT, and not ones that their 40-yo. high-school-retentive minds think must have whole hordes of geeky lil’ pasty-faced convention dweebs in funny ears out there, to make cry?

The LOTR, Twilight, Transformers, Inception, Marvel-comic, SW-prequel and Trek motif is getting a little, shall we say…monotonous.

EricJ, stuff like Birdemic, or Santa & The Ice Cream Bunny, whos ads you had to scroll past to comment? Or are you really defending the greatness of Karate Kid 3?

The reason Twilight, Potter, LOTRs, Trek etc are repeatedly done is that people want them, like and buy them and buy them some more. It’s as simple as that.

Hey, they did Star Trek 5 way before Star Trek 2 . . . before Bill came on board, in fact. And Star Trek 5 is an actual bad movie. So they fulfilled their primary obligation first in this instance.

And give ’em some credit. They’re trying to succeed in a broad market, not pander to a tiny niche. Far more people want to see riffing on stuff like Batman than on “Maniac.”

As someone who enjoys a fair few sci-fi films both legitimately and ironically, I’m quite eager for this newest venture. Keep at it!

Seems like an odd choice… I haven’t seen it since I was a kid, but isn’t Wrath of Khan considered to be one of the better Star Trek films? Why not do the third one? I saw a bit of that on TV recently, and I almost peed my pants laughing.

    1) Who wouldn’t want to eat barbecue covered in cheese?
    2) This movie isn’t unassailable in its quality (and really, what is besides The Third Man?), but when the guys riff they tend to have a “roast” approach rather than a “kill” approach anyway, so it should be great. Expect plenty of Ricardo Montalban impressions, and many references to “Rich Corinthian Leather”.
    3) I fail to see how three is any worse than two. That odds-evens rule is garbage.

I used to work at a fondue place. I set myself on fire there once. Oddly enough, I set myself on fire quite often when I was younger. Perhaps I was just more flammable back then. Inflammable? Flammable? Anyway, fondue actually is pretty good, but don’t, under any circumstances, throw an ice cube in the boiling oil.
As far as Star Trek II, I can’t comment much. Ricardo Montalban came into my fondue restaurant once, driving a Chrysler…

Being considered one of the best Trek films – the best, in fact, according to most fans – in no way negates the fact that it’s still quite stupid, and extrememly Riffable. Deep breath everybody,, and…

    KHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNN!

@ EricJ, if the Transformers movies and Star Wars prequels don’t count as “actual bad movies,” then, Good Lord sir, what does? At least the flicks Cinematic Titanic features have ultra-low budgets and/or a low skill to ambition ration as excuses.

Sharktopus ..I concur sir. I’ve seen the wrath of kahn riffed by Mile Sci fi and believe that it may be the best of the series but is still kinda stupid and hilarious if riffed properly.;)

  18. Cronkite Moonshot says:

Wrath of Kahn is perfect. It’s the textbook example of how to make that kind of movie. The recent JJ Abrams “Star Trek” movie only wishes it was worthy of licking the feet of another movie that is only worthy of mopping up the scum in Wrath of Kahn’s toilet with it’s own hair. 30 years from now people won’t be looking back so kindly on the 2009 Star Trek movie the way they look back on Wrath of Kahn today.

Still I do see some riff potential there (it does have Ricardo Montalban in it after all), but if they try to make any comments about any supposed “bad” quality of the film itself they will lose me.

Also I think EricJ (#9) has no point. None of the movies you mentioned form any kind of “motif” to speak of. It’s just a bunch of random movies that Rifftrax has done, and it’s not like they’ve ONLY done those movies. In that time they’ve also done stuff like The Room, Birdemic, Karate Kid 3, The Happening, Maniac, Ice Cream Bunny, and not to mention that it’s been a pretty long time now since they did any Star Trek movies, they already finished the Star Wars and LOTR series a while ago, and the Twilight and Transformers series ARE terrible movies that are perfect for riffing. Also there is the steady stream of excellent shorts. Rifftrax has been anything but stagnant (unless your idea of stagnant is them just doing movies, because that’s about all your list means).

I have never seen any Star Trek movie. Shatner turned me off to those movies. Rifftrax is the only way I’ll watch movies like Twilard and Inception. I can’t stand movies like that one their own. Whether or not this particular Star Trek movie is really considered one of the “better” ones, I’ll just have to wait for my DVD to come in the mail and see for myself.

  21. Sharktopus says:

@ Laura, Star Trek V was my very first RiffTrax, and still one of my all-time favorites. I recommend all the Trek Riffs highly.

I’ve been a Trek fan since I was a wee lad watching reruns in syndication, so I have a true (mostly non-ironic) fondness for Shatner, but I can’t argue that he’s the ripest of ripe Trek fruits for Riffing. (Montalban will just be icing on the cake.) So maybe I’m predisposed to loving the Trek Riffs, but Mrs Sharktopus loves them too, and she has only the most passing familiarity with Star Trek.

@ AgentMom, I don’t see why it wouldn’t work for you. Blu-Ray is the same framerate as regular DVD, just higher resolution, so they should sync up the same. (Unless the Blu-Ray version has a different cut of the film, which I doubt, since I’m sure they used the more available “director’s edition” DVD.)

The boys forget that while fondue does have you “cook” the food yourself – you do NOT have to do the prep-work or the cleaning, which is a TOP selling point for me. :)

That said I am looking forward to the “KAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHNNNNNNN” – back when Klingons didn’t have that worrying pointy ridge in their skulls.

A thought: the folks at Best Brains who made MST3k we call “the Brains.” The Brains who went on to form Cinematic Titanic are “the Titans,” which makes sense. But we don’t have a nifty moniker for Mike, Kevin, and Bill at RiffTrax. They need a name! We could call them the Film Crew, but that was technically a different project. At the RiffTrax Forum they’re usually referred to as simply “the guys,” but that’s a little too informal to use elsewhere. “Riffers” is too nonspecific; “Legends” (ala Legend Films) is far too pompous. Hmm… Any suggestions?

    @ 23

I usually do go with “Riffers” and let the capitalization do the specification for me, but perhaps “Trackers” or “Traxers” would suffice? Or maybe the “Arties” (RT’s)?

Mike is always introduced as the “Riffmaster” since he’s the head riffer for the project; that could be played around with. Or maybe just MKB for Mike, Kevin, Bill in the way we use J&TB or M&TB?

But do they have the intestinal fortitude to take on Star Trek: The Motion Picture? (Complete with the “overture” that’s been restored on the DVD.) Kevin does enjoy “the bald chick with the legs.”

I love it when riff Start Trek films! I’m a fan of both the movies themselves and the riffs. I would also like to see them do “Star Trek: The Motion Picture”. It’s hard to get through it on it’s own. I’d dust off the DVD if Mike, Kevin, and Bill were along for the ride.
