The 4pm show was amazing. There was last minute change in the movie from ‘War of the Insects’ to ‘Alien Factor’. Shout Factory was also there filming some interviews for the forthcoming Gamera box set.

At show 2 now. A few technical hiccups but a great show. War of the Insects was nixed for obvious reasons. Sat in front of Joel’s Dad and Shout Factory producer. Different pre-show from last year.

Thanks for the info Lazlow, nice to know what some of the special features for the Gamera set will be. Looking foward to seeing your interview with Joel.

Why was war of the Insects nixed? Licensing issues?

Probably nixed out of respect for the Japanese people.

@4, 5
It was nixed out of respect for Japan. The announcement was made on their Facebook page yesterday they were switching “War of the Insects” to “Alien Factor.” And I don’t blame them on bit. Just not the right time for movies about nuclear disasters in Japan.

Unfortunately Joel had a family ‘situation’ he had to deal with so he had to skip the interview. However Josh and Trace filled in for him and we had a great 20 minute discussion.
I have to say that sitting in the green room with Mary Jo and her husband, Josh, Trace, Dave Allen, and Frank was a very surreal experience. I was blown away at how casual everyone was and that they didn’t seem to mind that my wife and I were in there with them.
I did talk Joel in the meet and greet after the show and he was very apologetic at having to skip the interview so hopefully next time they are in town I will be able to talk to him.

Went to the night show, which was “Rattlers”. I never laughed so hard, or so loud, at any event, movie or otherwise. The riffs were dead-on, the pre-show was hilarious, and the Piper Rep was packed. Hopefully, this will let them know that there’s a huge fan base out here and that they are welcome back. There was a body building show down the hall, which was almost as hilarious as the show.
Before the show, the people around me and my wife (who isn’t a big MST3K fan, but laughed as much as I did) were reminiscing about their favorite MST riffs; the row was abound with “Thick McRunFast!”, “I have no powers, but I can skip reasonably well!”, and “Well, I don’t know about you, but I’m an icky elf!”
All in all, it was a great show, filled with many, many laughs.

I went to the 4PM show, it was pretty good. The show War of the Insects to Alien Factor was changed out of respect for the Japanese people who were devastated by the tsunami disasters. I sat row A seat 18 where I’m a few feet from Joel, Trace and Mary Jo. It was so nice that Joel’s family were there too. I actually get a picture of Trace before the show, it was so awesome. It’s nice to know that Arizona has so many MST3K fans and I would like to meet more of them.

Where to begin? Every aspect of last night was awesome. I took six of my good friends up from Tucson to Mesa. We watched “Warrior of the Lost World” and “Daddy-O” on the way up. Barely found the place; we had two GPS’s and still almost got lost! lol Took our seats in the fourth row orchestra pit, right next to Frank. The couple sitting next to me informed me of the movie switch at the early show. Gruber was great as the opener. J. Elvis did his Elvis Costello song with Gruber on iPad keyboard app; they had to unplug the iPad because of sound issues, but it was funnier with Gruber putting the iPad by the mic to pick up the sound. Frank’s standup was hilarious. Joel’s magic trick was fun. Mary Jo’s opening was funny. Trace’s reading of selections from his poetry book was cute, J. Elvis accompanied him on bass (which really thumped!). Gruber, accompanied by J. Elvis did some beat poetry, which was funny as well. Gruber and Rad showed of the lovely merchandise available in the lobby; Trace’s book, a tour poster, the cast “photo,” and DVDs. No shirts, as Gruber said they’re too heavy to carry around and you can get them from the website (take note if you want an autographed shirt, take one with you!). And Joel sang the MST3K theme song, accompanied by J. Elvis on bass. Joel slipped into “he worked in a satellite loading bay,” which prompted Josh to say “KTMA version!” At which point, we really did “just relax,” and took in “Rattlers.” I thought this was extra funny, since the movie on Elvira last night was “Eegah!” The movie itself was very funny, reminiscent of their riffing on “East Meets Watts,” in other words top notch. After a two-hour performance, we filed into the lobby to buy our goodies. I went for the tour poster. We were close to the end of the meet and greet line. The meet and greet line is always my favorite part. Gruber and Rad roamed around the lobby while we all stood in line. Joel signed my poster. I told him thank you for coming to back to Arizona, that I really appreciated it, and that I watch his show more than he could ever know. One of my friends told Joel he’d been a fan of his since the Saturday Night Live days, which lit Joel’s face up; he was happy to hear that. Trace signed my poster, and then I threw out my surprise autograph item for him, a paperback copy of “Outlaw of Gor,” which the “Outlaw” episode was based on. Trace was confused. I told him it’s from “Outlaw,” and he said “we did this movie?” Frank then chimed in “Yeah, we did one of the Gor movies.” Trace took Frank’s word for it, and signed the back of the book, and my poster. Frank then signed the book, and asked me if I collected the Gor books. I told him I was just on the lookout for this one, and that the entire Gor series was out-of-print. Frank then told me a lot of books are going out of print, what with Kindle and all. I agreed. Up next was Mary Jo, who signed my poster. I told her thanks for coming back to Arizona, and she replied that she liked it here and there are a lot of nice fans here. Then I had J. Elvis sign my poster. I told him I liked his Tom Servo, which he seemed very gracious to hear. I told him I even like the KTMA episodes. And he said that’s more than he can say for them, that when he watches them he’s like Say something! Just say something! I told him I’ve been doing public access for 20 years, and I can’t look at my early stuff either. Then the drive back. We watched “The Painted Hills” on the way home, and when it started everyone in the vehicle launched into a sing along on the them song, which was very surreal, but great. All in all, a wonderful experience, and I look forward to the next show, at which I will hopefully take even more people too! I’ll see about getting some pics of the “Outlaw” book up for you all.

My Outlaw book. Trace said where do want me to sign it? I said anywhere you’d like. He chose the back. As he signed it, one of my friends said sign it John Norman!

The actual movie and riffing were up to if not beyond the best MST3K standards which is not always the case with C.T. or Rifftrax. The pre-show stuff was margional with one exception. What a gracious and classy gesture on Joel’s part to acknowledge Mike when he sang the MST3K theme song. Fantastic! :-)

I attended the 8:30 show, changed to “Rattlers” (my lord, what a stinky, stinky movie). For me, since I always focus so much on the movies, the standout is the inexplicable move from the California desert to Vegas so the two leads can have, oh, maybe fifty seconds of romance before equally inexplicably zipping right back to their separate tents in the California desert. What…the…hell?
The Cinema Titans are such gracious, professional people. Despite the massive line stretching behind me, Joel chatted with me a little bit. A great show.
Now, they need to perform down here in Tucson, which is a much, much cooler, more awesomer place than anywhere in Phoenix.
