Weekend Discussion Thread: Worst Fight Scenes

Alert reader Mike, aka “Rowsdower”, writes:

For some reason I started thinking about how lame the fight scene was in “Prince of Space” or how wonderfully terrible the wrestling was in “Racket Girls”, not to forget the limp-wrist punch that Cal Meachum gives Exidor in “This Island Earth”. It seems there are so many fight scenes from almost all of the MSTed movies that need to be picked on a bit more than they have.

What immediately comes to mind is the “good-natured brawling” in “Hercules and the Captive Women.” Sheesh.

What’s your pick?

@ Watch-out-for-Snakes #70 “A really HARD discussion thread would be, “what fights in MSTied movies are actually GOOD?” Off the top of my head, the answer: None.”

I gave my answer to that question just three comments above yours. The fight scene near the end of “Kitten With a Whip” is pretty good. With some great camerawork, and passable fighting it is genuinely exciting.

Watched DEVIL FISH tonight and it’s actually Crow who calls the underwater fight the drum solo of movie fights.

“Hey Big, did you see me crotch that guy in the knee?”

Runaway tearing his own shirt off in Future War deserves an honorable mention.

@2 – Much as I’d love to nominate Batwoman’s Multi-Ratfink chase (“Maybe they’ll all turn into butter”), the judges are out on whether that actually ranks as a fight scene.
In absence of a decision, one more vote for HG rake fight.

the immortal struggle between the trucker and the ‘black bart’ which was so elloquently displayed in ‘Riding with Death’ comes to mind. the heroes ability to strike an opponenet 6 feet away while holding a gun perfectly still is the epitome of true fighting mastery.

I, along with Crow, appreciate the fighting skills of John Agar in his epic battle against the Mole Men guards.

Honorable mention goes to just how inventive the beach brawl was in “Party Beach.” the teamwork involved to trip each other, throw people at each other, or use your friend’s head as a battering ram; aside from the sheer goofiness, did anyone ever think that would work in a real fight? At least it stopped the dancing. Then they shake hands. riiiiight.

HG rake fight: curse you for making me think about that. I’m trying to erase Hobgoblins from my mind.

Any of the “fights” in Invvasion of the Neptune Men. Especially the one Neptune Man who simply fell down slowyly without having been touched. Pathetic.

That and the the fight between Mooney and Eddie and Mooney and the Old Guy manager. He stabbed him by making stilted slashing motions in the air. Sad really. Especially after he KILLED THAT FAT BARKEEP

Not much I can say that hasn’t already been repeated, but Bela Legusi fighting the rubber octopus in Bride of the Monster was downright cheezy.

Werewolf’s climatic fight between Paul and Yuri, shot from Paul’s perspective. Yuri throws his arms up in front of his face a few times to ward off the blows, starts bleeding for some reason, stumbles around, rolls to the ground and dies. He’s mortally wounded in a fight where no actual physical contact was ever shown or simulated.

The big cimax battle during “Colossus and the Headhunters” was chock full o’ lame, from the warrior half-heartedly fighting no one to the weak little princess slicing her way through several hardened headhunters to have a mince-off with the rather *ahem* SLIGHT and muscle-free villain.

  11. One of my favorite fight moments is during the opening of “The Last of the Wild Horses” when Frank and Dr. F are in the theater. One of the characters takes a whip to the face and Dr. F takes note of the obvious by saying: “You rarely see a good facial whipping”

    Classic!

P.S. I love this episode especially because of its inclusion of characters not usually in the theater. I loved Frank and Dr. F hurling the lines. I know it’s the same people writing the jokes, but the delivery has a different feel and both actors did a great job at getting their characters across while still being funny. Frank’s “Double Cranch!?” still gets me every time.

Easily, “The Sinister Urge”. Reply #3 earlier mentioned the fight during the raid scene, early in the movie; I’d had in mind Ed Woods fight later in the movie, at the Malt Shop. The fight (such as it is) takes place outdoors, and is so poorly choreographed…not even any close swipes that might APPEAR to have been punches. Embarrassingly funny.
