“Mr. B Natural” (MST#319) grabs an early lead with 10 votes……

I voted for “Mr. B Natural.” I really couldn’t decide on which one. They’re all good (and scary!) in their own way. :-)

Well, A Case Of Spring Fever has almost caught up.
Coily! Coily! Coily!
I imagine Droppy the Water Droplet is getting jealous.
Just think of all the things that can be done with water.

Why Study Industrial Arts? Every time I hear “Hi Joe!”. “I’m not a Communist!” I giggle. Simple yet effective joke.

Laura you actually can vote for as many as you like, not just for one. I voted for ten. :-D

Mr.B.Natural: funny but overrated. I think the strange fact of a female playing a young male character makes it bizarrely interesting to most. This makes it stand out in many minds.
But for sheer laughs I have to go with Hired!
“You, put a handkerchief on your head! You, swat at imaginary elves!”
“There’s a blue steak and a pitcher of martinis with my name on it.”
*turning my lights down*

Mr. B Natural, Johnny At The Fair, Snow Thrills and Circus On Ice are amongst my favorites and I voted as such.

A little self-control here:
Hired! Part 2
Design for Dreaming
Once Upon a Honeymoon
Robot Rumpus
There are others, of course, but voting for any and all shorts is too much of a mess.

Is “Assignment Venazuala” considered a short??

Why Study Industrial Arts?, Out of this World, Last Clear Chance, A Date With Your Family, Bodycare and Grooming, Assignment: Venezuela, The Home Economics Story, and Cheating are my favorites and thus the ones I voted for.
I also believe that Mr. B Natural (while very funny) is slightly overrated. I think Why Study Industrial Arts, and Last Clear Chance are funnier.

I have to agree with Jacob that “Mr. B Natural” is somewhat overrated, and I would include “A Case of Spring Fever” in that as well. Don’t get me wrong, I love both those shorts a lot, but every time MST shorts are mentioned they are all you hear about, and there are so many others that I think are a lot better.

“…pleeeease say this isn’t haaaapping!!”
Mr. B. I’ve busted a gut so many times on that one my guts are all busted up.

They are all good in their own weird ways, but I have to say that my top five are: MR. B NATURAL, CIRCUS ON ICE, A CASE OF SPRING FEVER, THE CHICKEN OF TOMORROW, and LAST CLEAR CHANCE.

Assignment: Venezuela is one of my favorites, too.
I voted for that one and Progress Island — “…now the site of numerous muggings.”

I can’t believe CIRCUS ON ICE hasn’t gotten more votes! In my opinion it’s much funnier than Mr. B. or Coily.

I’m one of those people can’t help but take the short itself into account when it comes to how I enjoy them on MST3K. Circus On Ice is boring. Then there’s how the short affects the rest of the episode. The Cheating short plants an idea and it’s carried through several host segments, completely eliminating any chance for host segments related to the goofiness of The Wild Wil World of Batwoman.

I liked “X Marks the Spot” early on,
(Joel: “‘Mark’s the Spot’?…Think it’s about a dog who changed his name”)
but I’m going to have to put sentimentality aside for Mr. B and Circus on Ice. The Pink Nightmare twins have me in helpless giggles every time.
(Mr. B may be “overrated” when it’s forced into being a Fan Icon of MSTiehood, but by itself, it’s a perfectly distilled bit of WTF? short-ephemera done right, Joel-era style.)
Haven’t seen any votes yet for “Home Economics”, which matches the usual whitebread-50’s targets with some truly looney Joel-era riffs.

The Chicken of Tomorrow tops them all. The unholy alliance between big oil, and big chicken…’nuff said.

I voted for it
Also, I never said I didn’t like Mr. B Natural, I just like Why Study Industrial Arts slightly more (I got shorts Vol. 1 several years back and Industrial Arts was the short that got me hooked on MST3K)

Once Upon a Honeymoon
Doesn’t get any funnier than that. ;)

Close second goes to “what to do on a date”. YOU LOOKED IN MY BOOK DIDN”T YOU!!!!

Is there no love for the exceptionally funny “Is This Love”? The short is laughable and the riffing is top-notch. It is my personal favorite.

#23: “Is This Love?” is a superb short.
“Know your ointments.”
“What’s that down there?”
I also LOVE “Speech: Using Your Voice.” “Be sure to use plenty of lip and tongue action” is a brilliant line–and it comes from the short itself. Delivered to them on a silver platter. :-))

“What to do on a date” is my choice. I never get tired of that one.

There are so many good ones. The Selling Wizard is an under appreciated one I think. A Case of Spring Fever is probably my pick for overrated. Mr. B Natural, Design for Dreaming, Johnny at the Fair, Last Clear Chance and Progress Island U.S.A. are the ones I’d choose as good introductory shorts.

After looking at the titles, it would’ve been really difficult to choose, so I just went with the first one I thought of: What to do on a Date. Would you rather go on a bike ride, or go to a weenie roast? Me too.
ps – If you look at the results sideways, Mr. B seems to be giving you the finger…

-Mr. B Natural (I can’t think of anything to say that hasn’t already been said)
-Junior Rodeo Daredevils (great job of making something dark out of something lighthearted)
-The Circus on Ice (the riffs on sexism kill me)
-Are You Ready for Marriage? (on the borderline between “great” and “good but not great”)
-The Chicken of Tomorrow (the serious tone of this short and its narrator makes it a great target)
-Robot Rumpus (I actually forgot to vote for this one, but I meant to)
I didn’t vote for “Century 21 Calling” or “A Case of Spring Fever” because I don’t think the riffing is strong, although the shorts themselves are hilarious.
Note that the closeups reveal the weakness of the premise.

“Progress Island USA” As a short, while trying to promote Puerto Rico is condescending and a little insulting; and the riffing is great (‘feel the glory of the royal scam’; this short was just MADE for that riff; and ‘no matter what the culture, folk dancing is stupid!’). Then near the end of the short, it replays a rapid montage that appeared at the beginning, which causes responses of “is it starting again?!” and “ok, we’ll move there!”
It’s such a 70’s period piece, too, so it’s got that going for it.

even to this day I cannot stop at a RR crossing w/out Crows’ voice in my head – “why don’t they look?”….. :talktothehand:

All the shorts are pretty good — ‘Days of the Years’ gets my nod because it contains my single favorite moment in MST: the funeral for his best friend is going on across the street, and George pulls down the window shade… “BOOORING!”
As funny as the social/hygiene shorts are, I have found them full of helpful information, and overall have good advice, Like Date with Family, What to Do On a Date, Ready for Marriage… You can start making fun of me now. BTW, I am actually married.

“Mr. B Natural” (MST#319) starting to distance itself from the pack, with 138 total votes from 261 voters (52%)…………..oh, and speaking of “the pack”,
WOO HOO!!! The Packers win the Super Bowl !!!
Sorry…….I think I’m starting to show signs of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder triggered by serious Super Bowl withdrawal symptoms…..
How much longer now ’til Super Bowl XLVI ??? :struggle:

I think all time favorite MST3K short is “UNCLE JIM’S DAIRY FARM”. Great short, with a great movie.

The problem with these polls is that they’re always skewed toward episodes late in the series, or that came out on DVD. So it’s a pretty silly exercise to count votes on something like this.
The funniest short for me is Young Man’s Fancy. The riffing is in full gear and the short is hilarious.
But surprise, surprise, it isn’t getting many votes because The Violent Years hasn’t come out on DVD, and wasn’t in the last 3 seasons.
I also especially like Design for Dreaming (same problem), The Last Clear Chance and Days of Our Years.
Spring Fever, Robot Rumpus and Mr. B. Natural are *wildly* overrated in the poll.

I love Assignment: Venezuela. The riffing is hilarious, and the extended duration is just right (I find the actual shorts a little too short). Plus, for some reason, I find it oddly comforting to watch. It doesn’t have anything to do with nostalgia, because the first time I ever saw it was when I bought the DVD set. I think it’s because the short is more of a travelogue, and I love watching travel shows like Rick Steves’ Europe or Bizarre Foods.

Made three votes. First of course is Assignment: Venezuela (Mr. Big Lake), my favorite short of all the times. Also voted for Junior Rodeo Daredevils and Hired: Part II (Electric Boogaloo).
I wouldn’t call Spring Fever overrated, #38, but I’m with you on Robot Rumpus.

“Mr. B” over rated??? Are you kidding me?
This was the consistently the best done short in the series.
Knew your father, it did.
I am also surprised at how few votes “A Date with your Family” is getting.
But the less said about that, the better.
And why is “Assignment: Venezuela” on the list? It was never, technically, in the show.
As for the others on my list;
Catching Trouble – Suffers from being early in the series. Look it up on Youtube. Its great.
“Circus on Ice” – They do things they are not proud of.
“Design for Dreaming”
“What to do on a Date” – If I had only seen this when I was single.
“The Home Economics Story” – If only my wife had seen this before we were married.
“Once Upon a Honeymoon” – What the heck were they selling???
“The days of our years” – Take two Quaaludes and watch this on again.
“Robot Rumpus”
On the down side, I never thought “Hired (1 0r 2)” was worth watching after the first time.

I dunno. Hired is pretty damn funny. “I could off myself.”

For me personally, Hired! w/Bride of the Monster is the perfect episode. It’s my favorite short and favorite movie. The bits aren’t top notch, save for the Hired song, but the riffing is 2nd to none in both. For some reason Hired 2! doesn’t do a lot for me. “For me” being the key words.

Good call! I’d never seen “Days of Our Years” until I watched it on Youtube after reading your comment. It had me in stitches.
Reverend: “I often stop by here for a cup of coffee. Whenever I do, I’m reminded of the things that happened to the people who weren’t even there.”
