New Computer Monitoring Software Leads to New Titles at RiffTrax…

The bottom line: Coming soon (no dates yet): “Highlander” (yay!), “Karate Kid 3” and (gulp!) “Birdemic.”

As for that hashtag game, how about “Litter Be.” Huh? Huh?

Excited about the coming titles, but also–

Is that a copy of The Expendables sitting on Bill’s desk? Hope so, they could do a lot with that one. So unprecedentedly dumb and full of testosterone that I could audibly hear my chest hair grow while watching the film. Ripe for the riffing.

I saw this on my Facebook page a few minutes ago. Very funny. I never heard of “Birdemic”. Is that some kind of Hitchcock rip-off?

  3. Laura says:

Sorry for the double posting. At first, I wanted to see “The Expendables” because my favorite WWE wrestler starred in it, but I heard the majority of the movie was focused on Sylvester “Why Am I Still Doing This?” Stallone and I passed on it. I didn’t really care about who else starred in it. I like explosions as much as the next person, but being a Mythbusters fan numbed me to the typical Hollywood big booms. I would buy a Rifftrax of “The Expendables”, even if they did trash Stone Cold. Also, when are you guys to going to have your live shows again?

    I just IMDB’d Birdemic.

    Oh my.

It’s exactly what it sounds like. And it gets 2.2 out of 10 at IMDB. I’m sooo there.

(Oh, and Birdemic 2 comes out this year….)

It’s not awful, it’s just sort of neutral. Everything was fine until they got to Kevin. I think understand the joke, that Kevin’s infractions were stupid and minor, but it’s not clear to me.

I think its sad that Kevin got fired, though it was justly deserved. So who will be replacing him?
The conor part was the best, but sad in a way because there are people who do exactly that. Anybody remember a certain individual back at the old Sci-Fi MST3K dominion board?

I read one of the reviews of Birdemic and they said it was WORSE than Troll 2.The director is a big fan of Alfred Hitchcock and even Tippi Hendren from The Birds is in it,but it’s probably from that movie and not starring in this one..And yes,Birdemic will be on dvd and blu-ray this coming month.Would’ve like to have seen it in a theater, but,oh,well, you can’t have everything.

As bad as Highlander 2 is, even the Special Edition, I think Rifftrax should skip right to Highlander: Endgame. That movie is a special kind of bad.

Please consider doing Highlander: The Source. Thank you.

They should riff the Black Swan Portman/Kunis sex scene and put it on a two hour loop. But leave off the riffing. And leave the room, thanks.

It’s exactly the KIND of garage movie that attracts poseur-fans who go all giggly over “The Room”, “Troll 2” and Uwe Boll jokes, and makes the easily attention-starved newbie directors think they’re Just The Most Lovable New Kitsch-Nuts In Kooky-Land–To wit:

  22. These are all good announcements. Highlander is a personal favorite, looking forward to that. Glad they’ve found a way to do sketches again. I like how tech-savvy they appear to be. And I wonder if they would actually dare to riff Black Swan? I enjoyed the movie but it seems a bit out of their wheelhouse… There’s a lot of dark material to mock in there.

The original Highlander? I like that. Highlander 2 might be a better target but the original…well…it’s ludicrous too, just not as incompetently made, so it’s fair game.

  26. MikeK says:

If they did Highlander 2, it would have to be the Special Edition because it’s most widely available version of that movie. The original one, Highlander 2: The Quickening, is goofier, but there are now fewer DVDs of that movie. That’s why I think that Rifftrax should just go directly to Highlander: Endgame. The last Highlander movie, The Source, is okay, but Endgame looks really cheap and bad.

When are they going to stop doing all these recent block busters and do just do some plain bad movies! ;)

  28. Laura says:

    @BathTub,

Some of those “blockbusters” are bad movies! Just because you have a big budget for your movie, it doesn’t mean it will be good. Throwing in the occassional explosion is not a substitute for plot and acting.

#28 – i think #27 was being sarcastic (unless i am completely wrong, and – like the majority of people online – cannot tell when someone is being sarcastic on the internet). the most recent of the films listed for riffing is “birdemic”, and let me tell you, it’s no blockbuster.

#19 – why do you call fans of “troll 2” & “the room” “poseur-fans”? yes, they are recent discoveries in the annals of bad moviedom, but they are also wholly worthy of their titles as the new kings of awful – every minute of both are done wrong in an extremely bizarre & entertaining way. i like that i can actually show movies like “troll 2” & “the room” to my friends who aren’t really big on bad movies the way i am – there isn’t a dull moment in either & both seem to have broad appeal as far as “bad movies” go.
“birdemic”, on the other hand, was pre-hyped as THE NEXT AWESOME BAD MOVIE because of the somewhat promising trailer that every pop culture commentary blog posted a year or two ago. having seen it, i can say that for me, it’s not even halfway there. there’s a crucial element that sets “birdemic” apart from “the room ” & “troll 2”: it’s painfully dull. after you get past the initial amazement over the awful production values, dialog & acting, it’s slow-going until the titular “birdemic” shows up. and even then, it’s kind of a slog. unlike “the room” & “troll 2”, “birdemic” seems perfect for the guys to riff because it desperately needs someone filling up the time with jokes. i’m excited to see what they do with it.

anyway, count me in for all of these riffs!

I love it when they do some of the older titles. Jaws and The Sixth Sense are two of my favorite riffs. Will buy all three of these new riffs too. I wonder if they’d ever riff Godzilla wih Matthew Broderick? I can see the possibilities:)

I know it’s hard to tell in a post, but I actually did get what the original poster was getting at. I just wanted to voice my opinion. I have always believed you didn’t need a huge budget to make a good movie. I do really hope they do the Roland Emmerick crapfest Godzilla. I will definitely get those movies they annouced. It’s the only I’ll watch them, just like the Twilard movies. I’ve never know they made Higlander movies. Is it the original actor from the TV series in the lead role? Or was it a bait-and-switch?

  40. Casey@Rifftrax says:

Different actor. In the pilot episode of the television series “The Gathering,” Conor Macleod (Christopher Lambert) makes an appearance and, basically, passes the torch to Duncan Macleod (Adrian Paul) – we get some back story of how the two are connected and blah blah. We don’t see Conor again until the movie “Endgame.” Which was directed by Paul as more of a continuation of the show than a proper sequel to the third movie.

  41. Dan in WI says:

I have to agree with those wondering why the initial Highland film is the target of a RiffTrax when (I think most will agree) it was the only good Highlander film.
I’m also a little leery about this one as it is a film I really love. In fact this is probably the first RiffTrax I’m going to be afraid to watch. Let me start by explaining that my favorite movies of all time is the original Star Wars trilogy. Yet even back in the day of MST3K I often wished (knowing full well it could never happen under that business model) they would tackle it because I saw its potential for riffing. So while Highlander (as a whole, not just the first film) is not my all time favorite it easily makes a personal top 10 list. So why am I afraid of this one getting riffed? I really don’t know for sure.
Even though it is the best of the films I can see it for all the continuity problems, both within the film itself and with the Highlander universe as a whole, that it has. That’s the first place I’d start riffing it myself. But again even though I can’t explain why, it is (for a lack of a better term) untouchable to me even though I generally believe nothing is untouchable. Maybe I need therapy.

Anybody else have some favorite they’d rather not see riffed?

  42. MikeK says:

Sometimes a movie deserves riffing, and Highlander is not one of those movies. I think it’s a good enough movie that might be hard to riff. It’s the first Highlander movie and it’s a stand-alone film. Highlander was also part of that generation of high-concept, original ideas that just doesn’t happen these days.

I would be a little uncomfortable with a Rifftrax of the first Robocop movie; maybe even Robocop 2. However, Mike, Kevin and Bill can have at it with Robocop 3.

  43. Casey@Rifftrax says:

@41 I am now going to speak as a fan here and not part of the Rifftrax team:
The Highlander Universe, along with Magic: The Gathering, Heavy Metal, and Vampire: The Masquerade is pretty much how I spent high school. To say that Highlander is sacred-cow territory for me is like saying Muslims *kind of* have some affection for that guy Muhammad. I could easily perform the first three movies as a one man show without needing a script (Renegade and Theatrical versions of H2) and I know the ‘mythology’ of the television show like the back of my hand. To this day, when I see a sword design I think, “This was in that episode of Highlander.” Yet I look forward to hearing the riff. I am actually a bigger fan of Highlander than MST3K (blasphemy!) and I still can’t wait to see what they do with it. Bottom line is this: life is freaking funny and if you can’t laugh about it, especially when it’s your own life and your own eccentricities, you’re missing something (Blah blah third world, poverty, yadda yadda, you know what I’m saying. Keep off the soap box.) I genuinely like Highlander, not in some ironic, hipster way…I actually like it. But liking something doesn’t mean you blind yourself to its flaws and the little things that you know are silly about it.

    @43:

Well now, there’s no need to get that serious about this. I think Dan in WI explained himself well. I think Highlander should have been riffed after some of the other Highlander movies. It is the only one of those movies that is actually good.

  46. Casey@Rifftrax says:

@45 I have no idea where that seriousness came from…I agree that Dan explained himself well, I was really just answering (way too verbosely) which movies I’d rather not see riffed. Answer: None. Bring all of them on.

  47. Dan in WI says:

Casey> It sounds like you feel about Highlander the same way I feel about original Star Wars trilogy. And like I said I welcomed the riffs of the original trilogy with open arms. That’s why I am surprised I have this apprehension going into Highlander. Sometimes the human mind can’t be understood by its particular user.

  48. Dan in WI says:

Casey> Oh, and I must commend you on your Highlander fandom. It takes a special kind of nut (and I use that term in the most endearing fanboy sort of way) to embrace any release of the second Highlander film. Again I consider myself a pretty big fan but I know I’m not alone in pretending that The Quickening and Endgame never existed. (I refuse to even try The Source.) Hech, if RiffTrax were to give the treatment to The Quickening I might not watch it. In this case it isn’t the sacred cow thing. I just don’t want to be polluted by that thing again in any form what-so-ever.
