  2. RiffTrax Presents Night of the Shorts @ Castro Theatre 9:30PM

Fun show. A little over an hour and a half. It was what I expected in that it was a Greatest Hits of familiar shorts with the guests each taking part in one. This is what they did:

First a “best of” clip reel from various movies and shorts.

Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett take the stage and tell us what we are about to see, and who guests on what. This was nice as it enabled me to jot down notes before the riffing began.

    “Buying Food”
    “Lunchroom Manners” w/ Maria Bamford
“Drugs Are Like That” w/ Cole Stratton & Janet Varney
    “Drawing for Beginners: The Rectangle”
“Shake Hands With Danger” w/ Adam Savage
    “Grasses” w/ Paul F. Tompkins

A lot of fun, but as usual with these live show some riffs were lost in the room’s acoustics, from audience reactions, or to faulty levels. Also, some of the guests lines were at times inaudible due to their own idiosyncratic delivery (Maria Bamford in particular – hard to hear a riff whispered in a funny voice). It was missing Mike’s authoritative tone. During “Grasses” it was weird to hear Paul F. deliver lines that Mike did so well in the Halloween show. But I’m nitpicking, he still got the laughs.

They re-distributed lines for all of them to fit this new duo/trio/quartet format, so it all seemed fresh to me. “Drugs…” came off the best because it’s so goofy, Cole & Janet are RT vets, and hey, it’s San Francisco. So, a good night out, but not essential for Rifftrax junkies. I saw no signs of a film crew, so I think this was a one time affair.

No meet & greet afterwards. :( I was still able to say hi after the show, I guess it’s just not their thing.

Heard it was great! Wish I got to see it myself! Sometimes it’s hard being on the East Coast.

  9. Laura @ #4: Adam is indeed a handsome man, but his lines were often drowned out by the audio during the short. He was visibly shaken by the many gruesome events that take place during “Shake Hands With Danger.” At the end of the show, he leaped to to stage, not using the stairs, and nearly knocked over a small video monitor. Apparently he missed the point of the educational film he riffed on. He is a daredevil. Kevin & Bill mentioned that they met him doing wOOtstock events so maybe they’ll appear together again in the future.

I’m not surprised that he nearly knocked something over. He can be a bit crazy when he wants to be. I bet it was hilarious though. I think why he was shaken because he’s probably done some of that stuff on a daily basis on Mythbusters.

Slightly off topic – keeping in line with MST cast members other projects…GoTo YouTube and search on ‘Bill Corbett My Monster’. Its 5 parts, approx 10 mins long each…. HILARIOUS. It was from the JoCoCruiseCrazy. The 5 part youtube footage is plenty good enuf quality to enjoy it. Its 50 mins of hilarity. And judging by the number of views it has received, hardly anyone who wasn’t there hasn’t seen it.
