Update: Joel to Appear at Ernie Kovacs Tribute

The Paley Center for Media in New York City will hold a tribute to and retrospective of the great Ernie Kovacs on Tuesday, April 12, and Joel Hodgson (a big fan of Kovacs and winner of the Ernie Kovacs Award at the Dallas Film Festival) will be on the panel. Keith Olbermann will moderate the panel, which will also include Robert Smigel (the creator of “TV Funhouse” and Triumph, the Insult Comic Dog), George Schlatter (executive producer of “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In” ), Jolene Brand Schlatter (a performer in Kovacs specials) and Ben Model (the curator of the The Ernie Kovacs Collection DVD Set, see below).

More info here.

In the meantime, for fans of Ernie and for those who want to know more about his work, Shout! Factory has just announced that they will release “The Ernie Kovacs Collection” in April. More info here.

Great news on both counts. I’m a member of the Paley Center and a fan of Kovacs’ work. I’ll keep an eye open for the event and the DVDs.

Wow… I might have to get that Ernie Kovacs collection. AND they have the Secret Policeman’s Ball, SCTV, and Larry Sanders Show sets. I think I know what to ask for when my birthday comes around.

IIRC, didn’t the Kovacs estate hire Joel to help catalog every existing Kovacs video/kinescope? (Kovacs died rather young and with his output spread among studios, networks and production companies on both the East and West Coasts)…I think the DVD set is one outgrowth of his research.

Interesting stuff. My only experience with Kovacs was seeing some episodes of his show on Comedy Central’s late-night schedule in the early 90s. But I loved them. Now if I could just find some episodes of Bob & Ray’s TV show…

It’s great to hear about this new Ernie Kovacs DVD set. There’s one that has been available which is basically the late ’70s PBS series that I first discovered Ernie. If I ever get the chance to speak w/Joel, I would ask about his experience of cataloging the Kovacs video vault.

Speaking of Shout! releases, they’re releasing a Captain Planet set in April. Not exactly MST3K related but it’s a cool show all the same.

H has a curious definition of “cool.” ;) I always felt a little bad for the South American kid with the “heart” power ring.

Me too. By cool, I mean something people hadn’t seen before. A-list talent on a kids show that is heavy on morals and kinda silly if one takes a step back is an unusual combination. And you can’t deny it was popular in its day.

A full list of the programs on the Kovacs DVDs is on the press release for the set, which I’ve posted/linked on my Kovacs site at http://www.erniekovacs.info. Unlike the “Best of” shows which are compilations, the new set has the originals shows in their original order, with material from 1951 to 1962.

#5 \About Bob and ray. I saw them at the University of Pa.
auditorium. They ended the first half in the middle of
the Slow Talker of America skit, and then opened the curtain to
the second half with the interview still going on.

Okay, I checked out the link and I still have no clue who that guy is. As for the “Captain Planet” DVD set, I always thought that show was just shoving some hippie-tree-hugging nonsense down everyone’s throat. Way too goody-goody for the few times I tuned in.

I second Laura’s post. No clue, and C.P. sucked.

You very rarely [like never] see his work on TV anymore. That’s a damn shame cuz he deserves better treatment.

The DVD set looks absolutely perfect. I haven’t seen Kovacs since I was an impressionable pre-teen, but I’m so glad I soaked up his surreal humor when I was young.

The panel looks awesome; if anyone gets to go, give us a reaction. Won’t you? Thank you.

The Tv Wheel special made me realize Joel is the Ernie Kovacs of our era. It’s a damned shame Ernie’s work isn’t better known today.

This is a very fitting appearance. While I won’t be purchasing the Shout! Anthology of Ernie’s work, I am very much aware of his impact on the medium of TV. I was probably the strangest 16 year old any of you would have ever met. But back in, I guess 1992, I became rather obsessed with Ernie Kovacs, just around the time I was getting into MST3K actually. I read “Kovacsland” numerous times and watched “The Best of Ernie Kovacs” that was shown on Comedy Central, weekly.

Joel is without a doubt that same kind of pioneer of the TV medium.

Is there a clip that doesn’t have that ear-bleedingly annoying singing in it? It was really hard to watch when having to listen to a dying cat being put through a meat grinder.
