In what seems to us like a prudent move, RiffTrax has announced that the scheduled Dec. 17 “live online” show has been cancelled. Their riff of “Santa Claus and the Christmas Bunny” will be released as a video download (VOD and download-to-burn).
More info on the movie here.
Great move! “Live” online shows are a step away from recorded shows, so why inconvenience everyone with a specific time.
“Release the Ice Cream Bunny!” More horrible than the Kraken.

Agreed with fantagor.
If it’s gotta be on the computer anyway, I’d much rather have it downloadable and not streaming so there’s no question it’s going to come through just fine. Friday’s event, for me at least, was a disaster.

I like the idea of them using their own infrastructure to put out live shows that I can watch in my living room, but clearly there’s some more work to do :)
Also, just saw the Steve Alaimo album ad in the top right and chuckled because I just watched “Santa Claus” yesterday :)

I’m saddened and happy by this announcement. *sigh*

I would have loved to see this live! RiffTrax live has become my favorite way to enjoy the riffing since the energy is always so high, and all of the reactions feel much more genuine. But I understand with all the technical problems that this should be cancelled.

Should be great either way. I’d rather have it canceled and for them take the time to work out all the kinks before trying to do another live show rather than having another Planet of Dinosaurs style collapse. I’ll definitely be grabbing this to add to my Xmas viewing (especially now that Chrimbus is over).

cool. i want to see this. hurry up already.

While I loved the live Rifftrax shows and would gladly go see any future dates (there’s nothing as good as a theater full of people laughing at riffing,) I just can’t understand the point of ‘live streaming video’ releases. If you’re not going to do it in a theater, then a DVD or download is superior to an ‘almost-live but not really’ streaming show in every conceivable way, unless I’m missing something? Am I missing something? Hello? Thank you.

I just want to see this horribly wonderful movie riffed to pieces. Would have loved the live show, but I’ll take what I can get!

A wise move all around. The movie itself seems horribly wrong on all levels, which makes it perfect for RiffTrax.

Do you think they’ll make a physical DVD of this one? I always like to buy those.

Well it cheaper this way around since it is not be live riff trax at movie but how will we get the movie? You can’t get at red box (where I get most my movie from.) and I doubt they have blockbuster.

This will undoubtedly be a VOD release, Kismetgirl, like all their public domain stuff.
Since I was lobbying for them to do exactly this (release it instead of stream it live) I’m going to assume they just listened to me (right?)

I (and I’m sure many others) have been wanting one of them (either Rifftrax or CT) to do this movie and I’m so excited I may break out into a rash!!! I have never seen this one but I’ve read the hilarious “review” at the Agony Booth years ago and have been (im)patiently waiting for this. What a wonderful Christmas present – thanks Mike, Kevin, and Bill!

As noted in the other thread, it’s not likely we’ll ever GET the CT version :( , and can’t much say as I blame them: Having already seen it, there’s way too little Badly-Dubbed Santa and way too much Cheap Thumbelina in the movie, and it’s not 100% what Agony Booth narcissistically promised.
(The whole AB site seems to be made for the HS/college crowd who grew up on the Medved Golden Turkeys, and are used to cathartically picking on things for the adrenaline thrill of picking on them, without possessing a clear understanding of what or why–Which might appeal to the Mike/RT crowd, but…) ;)
For those who hadn’t seen it yet and were waiting for the RT version to get their first glimpse, the original un-MSTed version is up at YouTube, for the curious:

Glad to hear this since these online outings have had more failures than successes. At this point, I want them to do something online live just for them. Seems almost more of a matter of personal pride than fulfilling a consumer need.
But since I was passing on the live show, this means they’ll get my money that much quicker.

There’s always next year, I guess.

Does this mean that if I take my home camera and get some costumes and school kids and make a “movie”, that Mike and the gang will riff it?
Just because a movie (if it even qualifies as a movie) is horrible doesn’t mean it’s riffable.
Following this pattern, I expect Steckler’s “Rat Fink a Boo Boo” to be next up.

I am soooo waiting for this. Very happy,

Actually, the movie poster has more action in it than this reindeer turd!

It’s a “prudent” move? How so? does that mean they can’t afford to do the live online show?

Due to the Christmas season time issues, I actually prefer this to a live stream. This way I can watch it any time. I still prefer the theater thing, but this is a good substitute this time.

Hey, don’t badmouth Ratfink A Boo Boo. The ridiculous gear shifts in that movie would make it great for riffing.

I can understand the decision; I know my computer would probably run into trouble. While I’d have preferred another live remote to theaters, this is better than a possibly glitch-affected webcast.

I love Rifftrax, but it seems like every time they want to do an online event, they are never prepared for the amount of traffic they get, and the site crashes. I have been unwilling to spend any money for online events because of this. It’s better for them to do the live Fathom events and release movies as VODs or DVDs.

I watched bits of Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny on YouTube last night. I’m afraid it might be too awful. It won’t stop me from buying it – but I not sure I’ll be strong enough to make it through the whole film. Hold me.

I love the Fathom in-theater events (now that my city actually hosted the previous two), but love even more that they are doing the VOD and download-to-burn on this. I hate that the technical issues have defeated them again, but for me personally, this is a blessing. I do agree with a previous post that they want to concur this LIVE online event beast that has mocked them for so long. Once they work the kinks out, I will gladly give them my money, but for now, I can’t wait for this “movie” to be mocked, downloaded, and burned to a DVD. Hoorah!

For those who have not seen this movie it could qualify as an instrument of torture, especially when Thumbelina sings. I actually tracked down a copy via e-Bay after reading the Agony Booth review. My family made me promise never to show it to my nieces and nephew.

Hope they release this on dvd, too.I’ve seen bits of this on youtube and believe me,it’s not an easy movie to get through.Painful in every way.

This is a prudent move. Can’t wait for the download to be available!

I watched a little of it on YouTube as well — wonder why Joel said it was unriffable? (Assuming he did say that). To me it looks like perfect MST3K fodder — someone taking themselves *way* too seriously (meaning, they actually think they know how to make a film).
To me a film that is riffproof is more like something made purposefully campy (think Trolls 2). This looks like someone really intended folks to be entertained, in the same vein that Manos was made. Actually, in some ways it’s even more horrifying because it looks as if whoever made it assumed *children* would be entertained (and children are actually more critical than many adults). Isn’t that child abuse? I do believe in many countries this film would cause someone to get arrested (or at least questioned by the child welfare department).
I’m looking forward to buying the VOD of this.

Well, good move. Some day the internet will be able to handle this kind of thing…but sadly not yet.
I would love to see more shows in the movie theatre. Loved the communal vibe, ya know.
So are they releasing this for download on the same day as the live show was scheduled? Didn’t see a date.

I thought it said December 15th on the link page posted here (but I’d have to check again to be sure).

I now see it says December 17th.

Does VOD work the same way as when you order the shorts? Not a technical wizard here!

The solution continues to be simple for the Rifftrax people to solve. Rather that funnel everyone through their server which obviously isn’t up to the task, Have the chat window and video window spawn separate browser windows that link directly to the content.
I had no issues accessing the show once I just pasted in the direct link to the video hosting site into it’s own tab in Chrome.
From an aesthetics stance, the “side by side” video and chat windows clutters the screen to the point that nothing stands out. It’s 2010, the year we make contact… people are used to the idea that content might be split between different “planes.” Fix it!

By the way, is there any word on whether this will eventually be offered as an actual DVD release in the future?

A shame, but I rather like their Fathom Events better. They’re always fun.

I understand the economics of doing a live stream. You can sell tickets to it live, create some buzz – later sell it as VOD and then again as a DVD. Make little extra coin? Why not.
But I’m glad to get it this way instead, so I can watch it at my convenience. I’m selfish that way, lol

Kids, there are movies and there are movies on drugs. This movie is tripping b@lls to the wall. If there has been a character more creepy than Mr. Shrew, I don’t know who. Torgo is downright cuddly in comparison! Scary stuff indeed! The unriffed version of Santa and the Ice Cream Bunny is available at cheesyflix.com too.

prudent, adj., wise or judicious in practical affairs; sagacious; discreet or circumspect; sober.

I’ve read all the comments and I’m curious about two things. Does this mean the Fathom events aren’t profitable for them? And second, does anyone have any guesstimations of the net income of our three fearless leaders? As a writer who consistently loses money year after year, I’m morbidly curious. They split everything three ways (I assume) but they must have staff and overhead plus the usual expenses. I know what it’s like to do something for less than nothing, I just really have no idea if they’re making $40k or $400k. They don’t dress like millionaires, but neither does Johnny Depp. If there’s a gun to my head (and there is–totally unrelated to this, fyi), I’m guessing they make more than the Master and less than Dane Cook.

#35:
Per the rifftrax site:
“When you purchase a Video-on-Demand title, you receive pre-synchronized video files, with the commentary “baked into” the video – as opposed to an audio file that you must synchronize yourself. Video-on-Demand Shorts are provided as DRM-free DivX, .mpg and .wmv files, suitable for your portable media device. Feature-length VOD titles are available as DRM-free DivX files, and may also contain the additional file formats listed above.”

Yeah- synching the riffs to the DVD or video file was something I tried once and never wanted to think about again. Entertainment should not be that much work. I understand there are rights and copyright issues that totally prevent them from embedding riffs into many movies. But someone with computer and a/v skills could cook up a DVD with both the original soundtrack and a riff soundtrack. Maybe they have and it’s on P2P.

I rarely have a problem synching up Rifftrax to the movies, and it really opens up a lot of current movies to our riffers with often hilarious results (The Room is a fall-down funny one; and Eragon with Mike & Kevin is one we’ve watched many times).
And yes, Rich, there are fans (with more techie knowhow than me) who have pre-synched the rifftrax and burned them onto .avi files of the movies. These can be found on certain bittorrent websites; the fans only ask that you buy the Rifftrax so as to not steal from the guys.

I think the fathom events were wonderful….we saw a film riffed lived with actual people in a large gathering…..rifftrax made money – cha-ching…..released the live show on dvd – make more money – cha-chang why mess with a for sure money maker…..the whole sync up of my computer and a dvd on my tv left a bad taste in my mouth……please try harder to keep doing the live fathom events……..please try to keep releasing films on dvd….as long as you do that I’ll keep sending you my money as my personal thank you for enjoying all of your collective talents
