Easter Egg on Vol. XIX

Our pal Tom Noel of the inestimable “Tom’s Temple of MST3K Stuff” has alerted us that there’s an easter egg on MST3K Vol. XIX.

To see it, load the “Devil Doll” disk, highlight extras then hit the left arrow. An orange light on the button panel on the desk lights up. When you hit enter you can watch a short presentation by Joel discussing the origins of “Movie sign” and why it was a crucial aspect of the show.

Short and sweet…it solves a dilemma that certainly made the actual filmimg of the show flow a lot more smoothly….Joel sports of rainbow of bright colors from the lighting, I found that amusing! Always nice to hear from the crew discussing the show. Everyone involved should feel nothing but pride by the effort put forth on the screen. You can feel his pride in this short speech.

Haven’t gotten the new set yet, but does Joel mention that the lights on the desk were spray-paint can caps? Boy did I feel dumb for never figuring that out myself.

Joel likes David Lynch’s “Dune”? If only they could have riffed that movie. Great cast, funky design, but no plot.

“Movie sign”, and it’s link to Dune (one of my all time favorite movies) is actually what got me interested in MST3K in the first place.

Wow, I haven’t tried this out yet. Sounds fun. :D

Btw, I noticed at one point on the Devil Fish disc, the Mst3k spaghetti ball logo pops up outta nowhere….. what’s up with that? :/

Out of curiosity, is there a list somewhere of the various MST3K DVD easter eggs? I know there’s been other Shout! Factory ones, at least, but I want to make sure I’m not missing anything.

Someone posted this on the livejournal MST3K community a few days ago (but thanks for posting it here too) and the planet logo in Devil Fish apparently covered up Peter’s testicle. Servo even joked “I hung one out for fun”.

  12. Glad to see everyone is enjoying the EASTER EGG. I found the DUNE reference amusing, as well. And maybe… just a little perplexing. But it makes sense! Let me know what you think of the other extra’s (the CITIZEN WOOD doc, the DEVIL DOLL featurette, the ROBOT MONSTER featurette, and the INVENTION EXCHANGE short).

I mentioned this on 11/09/10 here at mst3kinfo.com in the “Vol. XIX Review” topic, comment # 23. Nobody seemed to notice it, though.

    @10 TheNintenGenius

I maintain a list of info, including easter eggs, on all of the MST3K DVDs here:

It’s not pretty, but it works. ;)

This just adds to the already incredible amount of special features in this set. I am constantly blown away by the quality and calibur of the little documentaries and what not. Keep up the amazing work Shout!

Interesting Easter Egg. It amazes me how people can find them. I never would have.

Btw, I can’t agree overall with Joel’s liking the movie Dune. Most of the book was excellent, both in creating a believable (in Tolkien terms) subcreated world consistent on its own terms, and with some nice historical allusions- such as Anna Comnena writing a bio of her emperor father. But the mmovie, after a strong beginning, really deteriorated, especially as it deviated from the book’s nuances. Oops, I had a really strong ending to this posting but it’s MOVIE SIGN! (to watch Devil Doll and its extras).

swh1939 @ 13: I noticed that you mentioned it. I even thanked you for pointing it out, on post #28. I guess you didn’t notice it, though. ;)

For Eegah, I don’t get the supposed Zombie Nightmare Easter Egg. When you hit the down arrow, it just goes back to the Play Movie option. Nothing that I see turns purple on the screen. What am I missing?

To be on topic, thanks for the Devil Doll Easter Egg (love that juxtaposition in terms). Interesting segment and a good companion piece to the Invention Exchange extra from the Bride of the Monster DVD.

  23. eegah says:

@ Matt D. (#22): It worked for me. Put the “cursor” on “Zombie Nightmare = MST3K Dream”, then hit the down arrow. That should take you to the middle of the three lights, which is now purple. Hit select and you’ll get some craptastic music with cute girls.

@12 Daniel, this is another wonderful set. The MST alum’s participation is a great and the Ballyhoo documentaries have all been a lot of fun. Keep ’em coming!

    @20 – crowschmo

Touche. Actually I had noticed, but it had slipped my mind when I wrote that. Thanks (belatedly).

And very well played. I chuckled mightily as you slew me.

It doesn’t work for me. When I hit the down button it just moves over to Play Movie.

  27. ck says:

Well, easter eggs work on Santa Claus and Devil Doll, so I guess 2 out of 3 ain’t bad. But nothing on Zombie Nightmare.

  28. eegah says:

@ Matt and ck: That is very weird. I wonder if different DVD players handle the “down” differently. Are you playing it on your PC? Try the DVD on a different player.

The MST3K logo appeared on that episode when it first aired on TV. They did that so it wouldn’t offend I guess the Scfi Channel big wigs. But how ironic that they would use it for a visual pun if you know what I mean.

Makes me sort of happy/sad that all the DVDs I did for the DAP over the years have been replaced with real retail DVDs… of course this means the easter eggs I put on my discs are lost to the ages. :)

I just noticed (with Volume XIX–107 Robot Monster and XX–109 Project Moonbase) that they’ve skipped Episode 108–The Slime People. Rights issue perhaps?

  32. Sampo says:

    Tom–That’s always a logical assumption.

  33. ck says:

But…but…but “Commando” Cody won’t be complete without The Slime People!

  34. big61al says:

#31, 32, 33 I personally would not mind getting the slime people even if just to get a pristine version of it. But I could see that maybe from a marketing stand point you would spend more on the rights for something that might sell a little better. I don’t care what they release as long as they keep them coming like clock work until every one is released. I can see in the future if they released them in groups by genre or artist. For example an all Ed Wood set or all the Hercules episodes together. You could do all the biker films in one set. All the godzillas and gameras in one big set – but that won’t happen – Toho would never agree to that but we can dream I suppose

Okay Eegah, I just tried again, and this time it worked. But when it goes back to the main menu after it plays, I can’t get it to work. So to CK, I guess you need to try it right away the first time you get on the main menu.

And geez, after seeing the Easter Egg, I kinda wish I hadn’t found it. What a weird little video.
