Another CT Interview

A lot of these happened at Comic Con and we’re starting to see them come out. Here’s one from the AMC cable network’s “Scifi Scanner.”

Mary Jo’s last comment makes me hopeful that CT will not do newer films and turn into Rifftrax. Good news….

    1. There’s a back-story to CT ???? ( do I need to be reading the CT website ? )

    2. These answers would go well with the lame-o Tor interviewer…

artist funded project… composing within the negative space…a really well-written joke is a nice ripe piece of fruit….

    yuck.

Hmm? What’s wrong with Joel, Mary Jo, and Josh’s answers, medium? I thought they were pretty thoughtful and interesting, even though we’ve all read similar Q&A’s about a dozen times before.

I can sort of identify w/medium’s response. Sounds like you _can_ take the Midwest out of the comedian.

losingmydignity, I agree with you (and apparently MJ) The older and B-movies from MST3k, the Film Crew, and (so far) CT, all have a distinctly different and somewhat refreshing style from the overly-polished movies RiffTrax does.

Essentially, one of the things I loved about MST3k is that the movies they riffed clearly needed the riffing to make them palatable. While I’m sure RiffTrax do an admirable job, they just seem either not necessary or not enough to make the really bad ones (e.g, 300) worth watching.

As to those who find the answers in the interview pretentious or stodgy or un-“Midwestern”, while I don’t agree with you, I can see where you’re coming from. But why just complain? Why not make things fun, and riff on the interview? Something like:

    “…composing with the negative space…”
Oooh, that space was soo negative!

    or

“…a really well-written joke is a nice ripe piece of fruit…”
and my doctor recommends I get at least 5 servings of jokes a day!

I do have to take exception to not liking the phrase “artist funded project”, however. How is a mere description of the source of funding a problem?

    perhaps just my mean-spirited cynicism.

Do we say “artist funded project” or do we say ” hmmmm none of our other s*** is making any money, and Mike’s over at FC/RT raking in the do re mi, hey let’s get the old gang back together and try to get in on some of that scratch ( in my best Pearl Forrester voice )”.

But in the interest of full disclosure, I would feel much differently if I liked CT better than I do, which isn’t a lot ( sorry ).

Wow… yeah, highly cynical. While I strongly disagree–I enjoy both CT and RT/FC immensely, and hey, if ANYONE is going to “making scratch” off of an MST3K-like concept, it ought to be the genius who created the thing, right?–we need cynics in the world as much as anything else. Your view is duly noted, medium.

what does “artist funded project” have to do with someone else making money? One is a classier way of saying “DIY” and the other is, well, pure cynicism.

Of course, I can’t get into the RT thing (though I liked Film Crew–it’s the popular movies that I don’t like)and see their motivation as cynically as you seem to see CT…something about the newer movies makes it feel more shrewd.

RT is a Mike project he wanted to do for a long time, riff on newer movies/”blockbusters” and it seems to be making him and his crew, a living. OTOH, CT is continuing the tradition of riffing bad, B-grade movies, which is fine but if want to rake in in the money, your product and/or service must appeal to the consumer.

To me, this debate seems to come down to the ages old question of who does one prefer as MST host, Joel or Mike? I love the Mike era of MST but don’t care for Rifftrax because I need to buy or rent movies I don’t care to buy or rent in order to hear Mike, Kevin and Bill’s riffing from a completely separate source. On the other hand, I really loved Film Crew and am disappointed they don’t do it anymore. Although I prefer the Mike era of MST I find no fault in the Joel era either and there are plenty of examples of hilarious riffing (Pod People, Cave Dwellers and of course, Manos) so I also really like CT. I think the problem most people who are critical of CT have is that the movies they’ve chosen are SO bad they’re difficult to watch even with the riffing. I found myself thinking, “God, when is this OVER already???” while watching, “Doomsday Machine” but when I watched it a second time I liked it a whole hell of a lot more because I knew what to expect from the movie. I would recommend that 1) CT haters have a collective unbunching of their panties and B) Watch the episodes again. Finally 4) Stop being irritating, overanalytical fanboys and just be glad that MST is living on in ANY form, not just the form you wish it was living on in.
