Vol. XIX Review

Our pal Bruce Westbrook reviews Volume XIX, and does something I wish more reviewers would do: he offers thoughts on the extras.

The photo has Gypsy saying “You know you want me, baby” but I’m pretty sure that was Tom’s catchphrase. Am I just confused?

Season 8 is the best. Can’t wait to see “Devil Doll” again. “You know you want me baby” was Crow’s catchphase Brian.

I found it curious that the cast, and particularly Mike,
seem to have said they didn’t like the SciFi Channel
wanting adventures in time and space. I quite agree with
    the reviewers comments there.

And anyway, there will always be Richard Basehart watching
    over us all-especially Gypsy. :inlove:

  9. Very nice. I somehow completely missed the news that there was an Ed Wood mini-doc on this set. We haven’t seen a new Ed documentary since “Ed Wood: Drag!” in 2001, so that will be very cool.

I agree. But it has become clear over time that the writers and cast believe the only real point of the show is the riffing, as they have all shed the majority of the trappings that adorned MST3K. Of course, I don’t think the show would have caught on without the characters of Joel (then Mike) and the Bots, but they just don’t seem to be that important to any of the guys.

Sci-Fi wanting a *story* just added one more layer (a layer of interest to the audience, perhaps, but a layer of work to the guys). So knowing now what I didn’t know then, it makes perfect sense that the last thing they would want would be any kind of continuity.

One little downfall on this DVD for me though….. Shout! didn’t make a preview for it on their website. Damn. :/

Oh well. I guess they didn’t feel like it or they might have one for the regular release of this volume when it comes out (assumingly in ’11). Whatever reason, guess you can’t get ’em all. :/

@6 Bryan: I believe it was Bill Corbett’s Crow saying “You know you want me, baby.” Not sure which ep., but it was on Vol. 4.

  13. It was on Space Mutiny.

And the reason the writers didn’t like the storyline idea is because re-runs would begin airing in the middle of a season and between new episodes, thus throwing any semblance of continuity out the window.

  14. Oops, wrong movie. It’s actually Overdrawn at the Memory Bank. But Space Mutiny is also in vol. 4. XD

I really liked the ongoing storyline during Season 8. It’s really fun if you watch the episodes in order from #706 to #901. Unfortunately there were two problems with this. First, even though it was SCI-FI’s idea, they never bothered to show the episodes in order after they initially premiered. Second, SCI-FI lost the rerun rights to a lot of the films in Season 8 pretty quickly. Notably the first 9 episodes of the season. So if you were a new viewer watching the show casually, you could get confused trying to figure out what was going on when they weren’t riffing the movie. This is also a potential problem for new fans watching the show on DVD, since the box sets always consist of random episodes.

Still waiting for Rifftrax to release MANIAC on dvd. CT should soon come out with another dvd, hopefully WAR OF THE INSECTS. After all the whole point of doing those “Live” dvds were that they could be done more easily than the studio versions…so what’s the hold up?

Despite the Gypsy figure, I don’t think I will get this collection. I already have pretty good copies already. Vol XX looks like a winner though.

My guess is they want to get as much mileage out of each movie as they can on the road, and are probably saving the DVD version once it’s closer to retirement.

Should be coming out sometime this month, based on the pre-movie screen card at the recent Rifftrax Live show…

Our stupid theater didn’t even show the Rifftrax pre-movie screens this time (which sucked because on the way there I was telling my friend and first time Rifftrax live attendee how much fun they were), and when they finally started the show Mike, Kevin, and Bill were already on stage and just about to introduce the first short, not to mention that we had about 30 seconds of picture with no sound, and then sound with no picture before the dolts actually got it right. I assume that the whole point of the Rifftrax preshow stuff being broadcast at all is to have the live feed already up and running, which would allow the theater to get the kinks worked out WELL BEFORE the live event even starts. Somebody at our theater had their head up their butt that night.
