Volume XX Titles

Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XIX is out one week from today. If you order it from Amazon we would appreciate it if you would use THIS LINK.

And we are pleased to be able to reveal the episodes that will be included in Vol. XX from Shout Factory. No street date yet, but I assume it will be some time in the first quarter of 2011.

Departing from the “two Joel/two Mike” paradigm, it’s an all-Joel set with:

• 109- PROJECT MOONBASE (with shorts: Commando Cody, parts 7 & 8)
• 322- MASTER NINJA I
• 324- MASTER NINJA II
• 505- MAGIC VOYAGE OF SINBAD

(Let the choruses of “MASTER NINJA THEME SONG” commence.)

A very nice set here; the all-Joel aspect of it is suprising, but a good suprise. I’ve never seen Project Moonbase, so that’s another Season 1 ep to take in for the first time. Magic Voyage of Sinbad is almost as good as TDTEF, so I’m glad to see that one make DVD. I know the Master Ninja eps are immensely popular, and even though I’m not as keen on those as others, the fact that SF secured them makes me believe that they really are trying to attain as many eps as possible.

Alex, Shout has licensed the rights to the entire Showa Gamera series, or mainly all the gameras that mst3k did. They have released some if not all of those Gameras, yet they have no plans to release the Mst3k versions. Just wanted to say that. Also, that could apply to the other japenese films like Fugitive Alien

  3. Cody Himes says:

One thing you have to remember about the Tsuburaya episodes (Time of the Apes, Mighty Jack and the Fugitive Alien shows) is that all those movies were re-edited series, and that the English versions were prepared by Sandy Frank and his people. If Mr. Frank’s rights to those have lapsed (and they certainly have), then who knows what’s happened to the English “versions”. I’d say it’s unlikely Tsuburaya owns the rights to those versions, as odd as it sounds.

For example, when Media Blasters released Toho’s The Mysterians on DVD, they had to create a new English dub. Toho wouldn’t let them use the dub that played in American theaters in the 50s because they claimed they didn’t own the rights to that version. When Classic Media released “Ghidrah the Three-Headed Monster”, they had to pay some of the voice actors in the English version just to use that dub, again, because Toho didn’t own the rights to it.

Now, honestly, I don’t know how this applies to the Tsuburaya movies. But I don’t think it’s just a case of “Tsuburaya/Kadokawa/Toho doesn’t want their movies mocked.”

  4. Cody Himes says:

Actually, I retract that last statement. Obviously, the people at Kadokawa have taken some offense to MST’s treatment of Gamera because they’ve apparently stated that to people at Shout. My mistake. But, it’s also worth noting that Kadokawa seemingly owns the English versions of the Gamera films, as those are now showing up on DVD.

By the way, did I say how happy I was now that Master Ninjas I and II are on Vol. 20?

My favorite set since volume XVI.

Two more episodes of the ultra-rare season 3. And they happen to be the great Master Ninja eps. Plus Sinbad (that’s not Sinbad). doesn’t get much better than that for an early season fan like me.

    MASTER NINJA 1 AND 2!!!!!!
    WHOOHOOO!!
    Totally unexpected!
    Awesome news!
    Yes!
    Wow. Well done, Shout!

  7. EricJ says:

That’s strange–Shout’s usually anal-retentive about releasing Commando Cody in order. Apparently “Robot Monster” and “The Slime People” must’ve been held up in rights.
(And darn, that leaves only “Robot Holocaust”, and MGM’s never letting go of it.)

Good, knowing that it’s an all-Joel set makes this volume easy to skip.

Replying to #107 — Robot Monster isn’t held up in rights, it’s in the set coming out next week! You are right about the Slime People delay though.

Sorry about the rhyme… But still, I’m jacked about the Master Ninja episodes being released. I don’t think it’s so revolutionary to have an all Joel box set, Rhino did it with Mike on Vol. 4&5. Big deal. I like ’em both, and was actually more disturbed by the departure of TV’s Frank than any other change in the show.

People forget that Vol. 6 was an all Joel Box Set (Sans two shorts on Mr. B’s Lost Short Collections.)

Well, Shout seems to be good with licening movies from big studios….. so there’s a possible chance it could make it. Who knows for sure…

    @ 116 and 117

Its possible that shout could get away with movies from big studios, mainly cbs or universal, as shout has licensed the rights and released MANY of universal’s classic shows like Adam 12, Dragnet 1968, and McHale’s Navy. As for Cbs, its possible, if shout could able to release master ninja 1 and master ninja 2, then they could release any of the other tv pilots done by cbs possibly.

    I see.

By the way, I have a quick question about the Arkoff Estate: I know on Travis’ likelihood list, it’s said any episodes featuring movies owned by the Arkoff Estate are not considered likely to be released. Are they sort of like Paramount, who will only license their movies if they see big cash, or do they also have a dislike for Mst3k?

  21. EricJ says:

@117 – Yeah, was there as really a “complex” reason for cutting off the end for time as the EG suggests?
At the time, I thought Erhardt and Forrester cut the end off a serial because, well, what do you want from them?…They’re EVIL! ;)

(But unfortunately, unless we’re pleasantly surprised, MGM/UA’s got all of Charles Band’s early Empire Pictures through Orion–
And although we can watch RH on Instant Netflix, Hulu, and Playstation Network in high-definition, we can’t watch it in MSTed form, darnit!!!!)

@108 – but Mike wrote for those episodes! Just ’cause his jokes are coming out of someone else’s mouth doesn’t mean you should skip it. ;)

@117 – Gor (the first one) went up for streaming on Netflix! hilarious!

I do not have the answer to your question, yet I believe Shout would have to pay big cash for these films to be seen in a mst3k boxset. Also, when I talked about cbs, I only met cbs, not paramount.
Oh, and one more thing, did you read Travis’ list on the discussion board or on satellite news?

Haven’t seen any of these episodes, but obviously I hear about Master Ninja all the time on here and elsewhere. I am therefore intrigued by this set and will purchase it (even with not being so happy about it being all-Joel).

Has anyone heard anything about the individualy released Rhino episodes being re-released (perhaps in a nice boxed set) by Shout? I know there are some legal rights and release issue things. I just wonder if anyone’s heard anything directly from Rhino or Shout on the issue. It’d be sad if, since the individuals are slowly going out of print, we wouldn’t be able to get them again for years.

(I appoligize, this is an old issue, I know.)

I believe Brian Ward said that they will wait until all the first run episodes they can get are released before reissuing anything by Rhino.

I’m not purchasing any more MST3K sets until Cinematic Titanic gets their head out of their ass and has a show near me (Philadelphia is not convienent). I’m also not purchasing any more “live” DVDs.

  30. MikeK says:

    @129.

One has nothing to do with the other. Why skip a new set of MST3K DVDs just because Cinematic Titanic won’t have a show near where you live?

  31. Max Keller says:

“As a result, Kadokawa refuses to let the Mst3k versions get released, and it’s most likely safe to assume Tsuburya productions feels the same way about Saru No Gundan (Time of the Apes), Mighty Jack, and Star Wolf (the two Fugetive Alien movies).”

You’d think that we could all pitch in ten bucks each and buy the rights for “Fugitive Alien.” How much can that P.O.S. show possibly cost???? ;)

  32. Alex says:

    @ 131

I’m sure the movies don’t cost so much money, but if Tsuburya Productions also has a dislike for Mst3k, they aren’t gonna see a release anytime soon.

  36. Gary Bowden says:

@134 You’re probably right about that. What I’d like to know is,what does one have to do with the other? CT has never performed close to me at all(I live in Arkansas),but I managed to make the drive to Dallas last year and it was well worth it!I guess Laura is throwing a temper tantrum and holding her breath, huh? I guess Laura only buys cd’s of her favorite artists/groups that only perform close to her.

Just a word of caution to those that plan on skipping any MST release. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but mark my words one day you will regret it. Imagine how many folks wish they had Vol. 9 or original Vol. 10 or any of the other discontinued titles. MSTies usually don’t sell their collections so one may find it hard to find years from now.

Take it from someone who knows many friends that have been burned for waiting just a little too long.

Brian at the Shout! Factory forums said, “I am hard at work on these. But, no. There’s no glimmer re: MST3K. The Japanese just aren’t into their man-in-suit flicks being parodied or mocked in any way.”

Don’t know if you guys knew or will read this (seeing as though the last post was well over a month ago), but Amazon just listed the street date as March 8th with a list price of $41.99. No matter how you feel on the subject of it being a Joel-only set, that’s a pretty good deal.
