The show was just terrific. Really dull movie, but really funny, funny CT show! Some of the best live riffs we’ve heard of the four times we’ve seen them live now. And as always, they were gracious and wonderful at the meet-and-greet afterward. Lisner Auditorium is a great theater and the show worked very well there. Sampo, I’m sending you pictures in a few minutes.

Great show. First time I’ve seen them live. Fun times.

Wonderful show! We had a blast. This was also my first live CT show and loved every second of it.
Joel had commented on how much he liked Lisner Auditorium during his intro and the sound for the show was fantastic. We could hear every riff and the movie quite clearly.
I hope the CT gang had a pleasant experience here in D.C. and look forward to their next LIVE show.
PS: I had Joel, Josh, and Trace sign my THE CRAWLING EYE DVD sleve and Frank & Mary Jo signeed SOULTAKER. Good times were had by all. :-)

See, I didn’t find the movie DULL.. I found it really unpleasant, actually, between all the maggots and pus, and the full on nastiest subtext of any MST3K related movie ever, (it’s a really angry, racist, vile little movie in which Japan’s a blameless victim, Americans are mostly all obsessed with genocide and all people with any foreign connection can’t wait to rape or murder pregnant women)… (Wait, that’s not subtext, that was largely text)…
Actually, Legacy of Blood is still less pleasant.
And damned if they didn’t riff it to death. It was easily the funniest CT I’ve seen, everyone was on killer form. They hadn’t been to anywhere near DC before, and we had a great time. And watching Mary Jo and Frank riffing live is somehow a hugely endearing experience, and all five of them so clearly love each other to death. I asked Joel at the signing whether they would hopefully be back, and the neatest part of the evening was just watching him… analyze as he answered, as a businessman, a comedian, a pro who has to help plan the tour dates, all of it. (Short answer: Yes)
And a historical note! Across the street FROM the Lismer auditorium is a building genuinely called the Cloyd Heck Marvin Center.

War of the Insects is a truly bizarre film. On top of everything Simon said, it was like a fever dream, complete with weird hallucinations, WWII black-&-white/orange flashbacks, and visions of Charlie screaming Genocide a million times throughout the film. I hope they release this one on video, because CT was merciless on this film wreck.
Thanks CT. Excellent show!

I’ve posted some pictures from last night’s CT Live show at this Flickr link.
I’m sticking with my comment above that the movie was dull. There were even multiple riffs aimed at the pure mind-numbing slowness and many pointless and boring scenes in the film. I’ll agree with the comments above regarding it being dismal and unpleasant. When the movie wasn’t dull it was jarringly bizarre and horrific. I guess they succeeded a little bit on the horror aspect of the film because there were definitely some horrible shots of insects combined with supposedly human tissue that were horrible to watch. At no point was the story good enough to make you want to see those scenes.
I commented about the bleakness of the film to my family after the show. The movie was bleak from the beginning and ended about as bleak as it could get. No feel-good ending to any aspect of the story in this one, not even a little. And the acting, even if you ignore the dubbing, was simply terrible. The cheaply done dubbing made it seem even worse. A real stinker of a film and CT did great things with it. Great show. Don’t miss it if you get the chance to see it.

I can’t help but wonder if the gross-out, grade-Z films CT has been using has been a turn-off for some fans. I’m afraid most of them are a bit much for me.

Last nights show was tremendous fun. The audience was really into the show. There were a few riffs that were lost due to the laughter from the previous riff, but otherwise the pacing was just about perfect. As mentioned, there were a few scenes that were a bit gross (insects biting flesh and crawling maggots), but most of the shots of putrifying flesh were obviously bad special effects. In fact, the movie itself provided a number of laughs on its own that the Titans just let play out.
The show started with Mary Jo introducing Dave ‘Gruber’ Allen. Gruber provided the warm-up and got the crowd going. Josh came out and played bass while Gruber read some of his haiku and the two of them did a bit about WADD, the radio station that only plays your favorite parts of the song. (Josh absolutely nailed the singers on most of the songs). The final warm-up was provided by TV’s Frank who concluded by reprising his theme song from ‘Convoluted Man’.
Joel then came out and introduced the Titans and they got right into the movie. A movie that certainly was unwatchable without the Titans. With them, the evening flew by. After the movie all 5 Titans were available for autographs and pictures. The line was long, but the GWU staff kept it moving along at a good clip. Gruber was also in the auditorium’s foyer. He was very gracious and was able to spend time talking to people.
I can honestly say that while I had high expectations for the evening, they were greatly exceeded. It was a great night.

Two shows in two nights, only 9 comments? Is anybody out there? I love reading about the shows, will be going on the 29th. in Boston. Please post more stuff, like pictures -THANKS Mr.B(ob) great stuff, great idea using stuff from Satellite News. Went to Staples last night and had copies of the song made up and fan club cards done on “forrester” green paper. Also found post card from a “turkey” day on Comedy Central from the early 90’s. Friends that are going with us said they were looking for something different to have them sign, so I figured these things would be cool after seeing your copy of the song signed. Also I have pictures of Frank and Dr. Forrester and Joel and the Bots that I want to get signed, along with my lunch box.

Saw the show last night at URI. It was GrrrEAT! (That’s Joel’s Tony the Tiger) :-D The movie was Samson and the Seven Miracles or something like that (I counted NONE – none miracles) a sword and sandal piece of crap that the Titans turned into fun. 8-)
Good thing I went earlier in the day to scope out the campus – the auditorium wasn’t the easiest thing to find. No signs for the show, will call was in the building next door, parking was just – WEIRD. Just find a spot somewhere, people. :-P
The show:
Same thing as always – Gruber comes out and sets up, says there’s ten minutes til showtime ;-)
Mary Jo comes out and re-intros Gruber -reading from a statement he gave her, as if it were an entry from Wikipedia. (Some things needed verification, or however they word it, for example, the statement that he’s in with the ladies).
Mary Jo: “Thanks-how’s everyone doing-(no pause) great-you sound fun.” :rotfl:
Gruber does some stuff, brings out Josh, they do their Haikus and clown song and WADD radio station thing, ten minutes til showtime (Josh: “Let’s say NINE minutes now.”) Frank comes out and does his Convoluted Man thing.
I think all these are funny, but I think enough people have seen them now. I think they should add these openings to one of the live DVD’s for posterity and start doing new bits. They do improve a bit and do things a little differently each time, but, I think they could come up with different skits now
(How do you get at these new smiley’s? I can get some of them, but they just kind of disappear at the bottom and there’s no way to arrow down to get at the rest of them – I like that there’s more than there used to be and there’s more variety, but they’re not as distinct as the old ones were).
And the movie. Ah, the movie. What a stink burger. The riffs were all good, the sound was good, everything done well, had fun.
There was even a point in the movie where people are kind of running around madly and the Titans shout,”We’ve got Movie Siignnnn!!!” – which drew lots of applause and laughs.
Wish I could remember more of it, maybe I’ll think of some stuff later. I’ll definitely be getting this one when it comes out on DVD.
Good job – again – CT!

Oh, yeah – when Gruber came out to do his thing, before Josh came out, he introduced RAD (hi, RAD!), and he modeled some CT gear and showed off some merchandise they’d be selling after the show.

I attended the DC showing of War of the Insects (aka Genocide) Friday, my first live CT event. It was fantastic; exceeded my expectations. The venue was also great, with plenty of employees to help you find your way (the advantage of being on a college campus, I assume!). I agree that the movie was a mess. A bleak, convoluted, overacted mess. Most of the insect shots appeared to be of common European honeybees, with the occasional cringe-inducing closeup of some wasp-type thing biting something fleshy. Hope there weren’t any insect-phobes in the audience!
Thanks for the photos, Mr. B(ob); I think it was you and your fine family that I was sitting next to in the theater. Nice to meet you!
In the meet-and-greet line, I was next to a guy with a great Tom Servo he had brought to be signed, which was a lot of fun. Definitely, definitely worth going if they ever come anywhere near you.
I leave you with one final thought: “Everybody move up a little!” :-)

Oh-the show at URI- Sampson and the Seven Miracles, not Samson. No Mexican wrestlers involved. Just a big, beefy, shirtless, oily guy with a skort. Sucking in his gut.

Oh, yeah – A man proposed to his fiancee at the show. I guess they worked it out ahead of time. Joel called them up to the stage saying that they were getting a prize for having travelled the farthest to see the show (they were from Tenessee). When they came up to the stage (they were in front of it, not on it), instead of getting DVD’s or something, the man got on his knee and asked her to marry him. Good thing she said yes – that would’ve been embarrassing. :-D
(Jeez – do I have enough posts on here?)

@16: That was me. Best prize ever. I mean, I was expecting maybe a t-shirt or something, but an engagement ring? Much, much better. :)

Hahaha, Mstie#44772, “Everybody move up a little” was almost as funny as the show! This was my first time seeing CT live and it was fantastic. I so hope they come back to the DC area again soon.

@ #8: “I can’t help but wonder if the gross-out, grade-Z films CT has been using has been a turn-off for some fans. I’m afraid most of them are a bit much for me.”
I have to admit I sometimes have mixed feelings about some of the more disgusting movies CT has used. On the one hand it’s pretty cool that they are not constrained with network standards on the movies they can use as they were when they were on TV as MST3K. On the other hand, some of the movies are a bit much on the gross-out. And I still haven’t figured out why they blocked out the simple topless nudity on their Frankenstein’s Castle of Freaks DVD, yet the vile grossness of some of the horror scenes in other films and even a certain word were not edited in other DVD releases. The nudity did not involve any kind of lurid sex, it was just simple nudity, a lot less offensive than much of the other stuff that is not getting edited. Based on what they are not editing or censoring at this point I think they should leave well enough alone on a simple “breast shot” in their movies. If they’re going to use movies like the ones they already have then I think they should use them uncensored as indeed they have most of the time.

Great time!! I’m so glad I got to this event with my dad, sister, her fiance, and my buddy Scott…and we got to meet everyone! We presented Joel with his own personalized bobble head (which we are assembling a few more of for ourselves…) and even got some great photos of Mr. Hodgson with his little doppleganger: http://ralphscudieri.blogspot.com/2010/10/cinematic-titanic-mystery-science.html
Enjoy!!

It was GREAT! And the guys and Mary Jo were very nice afterwards. We’ll definitely be going back. :) That was my dad who made the Joel bobblehead, too. So it was a family affair! It may not be for all children, but I would tend to agree that a PG-13 rating was applicable, like they say on the CT site.
Fantastic!
