Weekend Discussion Thread: Remakes and Recastings

These two suggestions arrived within days of each other and they seem complementary so I’m presenting them both.

First, alert reader Luci writes:

Hollywood’s in a remake rut, it seems, so why not give them some new fodder to work with? There are many times while watching an episode that my roommates and I will think, “Hey, wouldn’t this be great if Peter Jackson directed it?” or, “Morgan Freeman would be awesome in this role!”
So, if you could re-cast and/or re-crew any MSTed movie, which one would you pick? For example: Michael Bay’s “Godzilla vs. Megalon” starring Jackie Chan as “Rex Dart”, Bruce Campbell as “Oscar Wilde”, and Keanu Reeves as “Jet Jaguar”.

Thinking along similar lines, alert reader Stacy writes:

I was thinking that if Hollywood were to try again to make a MST3K movie, they might be tempted to replace everyone with a more recognizable star. So here’s the question…if Hollywood were to recast our favorite riffers, who would you choose? Steve Martin as Dr. Forrester? Joel McHale as Mike Nelson? Let’s hear from the fans!

I kind of like the idea of Judd Apatow remaking “Being from Another Planet” with Michael Cerra in the Ben Murphy role and Jonah Hill in the Kevin Brophy role.

And what do we think of Patton Oswalt as Dr. Forrester? And Ryan Stiles as TV’s Frank? ‘Cause it’s all crazy and mixed up and wacky!

What would your picks be?

I’d just like to see David Lynch’s take on The Wild Wild World of Batwoman. I’d be fine with the cast staying intact.

And what would M. Night Shyamalan’s version of Manos be like? Again, I’d just as soon leave the original cast, and see how things changed with a different director.

    Fart Bargo @ #52

If you switch Joe Pesci and Harvey Keitel around you would have the perfect cast. You need Pesci’s inner violence to portray Mike appropriately. Keitel can do great facial twitches.

Even though I’m late (again), had to give the episode movie remake a try. I thought Wes Craven could do something at least very good with “Bloodlust!”

    Dr. Albert Balleau: Johnny Depp
    Betty Scott: Kaley Cuoco
    Dean Gerrard: David Arquette
    Johnny Randall: Justin Timberlake
    Pete Garwood: John Header
    Jeanne Perry: Kim Kardashian
    Captain Tony: Brendan Fraser
    Sandra Balleau: Laura Dern
    Chondor (Eyeball?): Kane Hodder

    See ya!

    Smirkboy-I like your suggestion!

HK & LB had a pretty nasty break up so no acting required was in my mind.

Pesci as Torgo, leering & stuttering, fogetahboudit!

How about a remake of Fire Maidens of Outer Space. Quentin Tarentino could direct. Two rival teams of astronauts could land and engage in a Yojimbo like stand off with the Fire Maidens caught in the middle.

#41 – Nick Frost as TV’s Frank and Simon Pegg as Mike made me smile very wide. Those guys rock my world. I swear all Nick Frost has to do is raise an eyebrow and I’m on the floor laughing.
