News from CT

Joel seems to like saving up news and then releasing lots of it all at once. That’s what he did today:

• First up: CT is planning on “settling into a delivery schedule of a new show every six weeks or so. Which means, the next title, “The Wasp Woman,” is scheduled to go on sale Thursday, Aug. 7th.

Here’s the trailer:

• CT has booked another live show Saturday, Nov. 1, at the St. Charles County Family Arena 2002 Arena Parkway, St Charles, Mo. That’s a week after the Oct. 25 show in Minneapolis at the State Theatre. Buy tickets for the Minneapolis show here.

• Also: watch for a new, easier-to-grok opening page of the CT Web site, coming soon.

Excellent news! I really liked the last DVD. Much better than the first one. It was up to the level of the classic MST3K episodes.

I noticed that Joel didn’t mention Mike, Bill, Kevin, or Jim in his section about the upcoming panel at Comic Con. I’d have hoped he would be more willing to promote it as a full reunion of the cast. Too bad…

But regarding the matter at hand, the trailer for the Wasp Woman looks great!!

“I’m not signing this, I WANT the highway to come through here.” lol

The last time I saw this was the special helmed by Frank in summer 1996 (or was it 95?) which was colorized and riffed on by Dustin “Screech the sociopathic jerk” Diamond and other Saved By the Bell alum. Anyways, it’ll awesome if we can get a new CT every month and a half. Me and my best friend got our tickets to the live CT show in Minneapolis in October. :D

In the email, Joel also announced that there would be cast interviews filmed for the 20th anniversary DVD, and that the panel at Comic-Con would also be filmed and included on the DVD! Maybe it will be worth the higher price after all!

They always seem to pick some great riffs to end their trailer.

Take that people who use not being child-friendly a reason against RiffTrax/the Mike years!

Looks amazingly promising, will be ordering the day of release (like I did for Doomsday Machine)

I just wish there was some way to let people who buy the dvd download it too. Or maybe stream it. Or something that makes me not have to wait even longer

Can’t wait for the Wasp woman. Maybe they’ll do the sequel…The Candidate!

I love hearing that we’ll get a new one of these every six weeks, and I loved three riffs in particular on the trailer: Two have already been mentioned in the comments, but “More trouble for Michael Vick” gave me a chuckle too.

    Looking forward to it.

I’ve never understood those people. Anybody over the age of twelve can cope with sex jokes and mild cussing, and why would anybody under the age of twelve be watching MST3K or Rifftrax? I’d have thought the humour would go right over their heads. As a Young Person (a few months younger than MST3K itself  ), part of what I love about the show is the interactive nature of old riffs, because looking up the ones I don’t understand teaches me more about the politics or current affairs or pop culture of the time. But what kind of eight-year-old has the patience for that? Any one that did would surely be mature enough to cope with a little innuendo.

No kidding! (and well-stated) Why do so many people in this pathological socially-repressed and culturally-retarded society get their panties in a bunch over the mere thought of hearing the “7 Words” or any description of the body’s normal biological functions, including (*gasp*) Ess – Eee – Ecks?

OH MY GOD! A BARE BOOBIE WAS SPOTTED! RUN FOR THE HILLS BEFORE THE UNIVERSE COLLAPSES!!!

I am so sick of the puritanical BS (see, can’t even say THAT here) this country wallows in, it makes me puke. I’m surprised that the average sheeple here can even tie their own shoes.

Well if all bets are off with the adult content then I’d LOVE to see them do, “Invasion Of The Bee Girls”. That movie would be a dream come true for any riffer.

—I first discovered this wonderful series when I crawled out of bed one saturday morning in 1994(a Joel year!) and saw my 4 year old twins watching MST3K and laughing! As I laid on the couch attempting to ignore what i thought was some goofy kids show, a bit of adult humor caught my ear and I sat up and started to pay attention!! I loved the way the adult stuff went right over their little heads and ran smack into mine!! I’ve been hooked ever since!!

I’m stoked for the new CT. Doomsday Machine was hillarious! Much better than Oozing Skull.
Wasp Woman is a classic Corman stinker, so I can’t wait to see the CT treatment of that.

I like CT much better than Rifftrax. I mean, I get Mike’s concept (And I’m a HUGE Mike fan) but not actually having a physical product to purchase and take home kind of bites. I can imagine it can be murder to synch up the riffs with a DVD, and the idea of using their software loader thing and having to watch it on my computer is kind of lame.

I liked it when Mike released stuff on DVD through Legend Films, I think they should go back to that. Forget the colorizing of stuff, just release movies with the commentary tracks. Stick with public domain movies if you can’t shell out for the rights!

Ah well, dream a little dream.

As long as I’m dreaming, it would have been cool if they did a 20th annaversary MST3K thing. I think if they had everyone play a part (Like having both Mike and Joel in the theater, and having J. Elvis/Kevin and Trace/Bill switch voice/puppeting roles between acts) would have been nice (I mean if you go with Mallons explanation why they couldn’t sort things out which sounded to me like a bunch of “Trying to avoid kicking dirt because I have to play nicey next week at the Con” when he answered questions)

One thing I wish SOMEBODY would Riff, (and this would have been so perfect for a 20th Anniversary DVD special) would be Mallon’s movie “Blood Hook”, I think it would have been funny if they did. It would be so easy to get the right since it’s owned by Troma, and they’ll jump on the bandwagon for anything.

Well, I’m going to be positive. The first trailer to come out, “Oozing Skull,” I didn’t think much of it, but I ended up loving the dvd! The second trailer, “Doomsday Machine,” I loved the trailer, but was let down by the riffing. Now, “The Wasp Woman,” a great bad movie, one I have enojyed and hoped forever they would do, the trailor for it comes out, and I’m not feeling it at all. So, if history tells me something, hey, this is going to be a GREAT CT!! YAY!!

  24. Eric says:

Yeah, I’m not really looking forward to this release either. Look, I understand that not everything can be “Mitchell” or “Manos: The Hands of Fate,” but “Doomsday Machine” and “The Oozing Skull” were fairly painful to watch. Sure, there were some jokes that got me going, but mostly I experienced 90 minutes (or however long they were) of boredom for both the CT releases.

RiffTrax, too, often suffers from the same problem — lots of jokes that work, but many that fall very flat. The difference is that I can get 3 or 4 RiffTrax for each CT. So what if I have to synch them with a running DVD? It’s not as hard as the naysayers would have you believe. Again, you’ve got to be flexible — do you want it all done for you (CT, MST3k via Rhino or Shout!) and have to wait 1, 3, or 6 months for each new installment? Or would you prefer to do a little work yourself and get new material, cheap, all the time? A little of both, I think, says me. Right now I am primarily buying all the shorts RiffTrax puts out. If there’s one thing that was 100% true during any host era it was that the shorts were always the funniest things going… even when the main feature and the riffing was off.

    Just me two cents.

    Professor & I’m not a medium:

I think the problem with “Doomsday Machine” is that the movie BLOWS SO BAD that it’s hard to watch it even with the riffing. I thought the riffing was hilarious but the movie just kept getting more and more tedious. The second time I watched it- and knew what to expect- I thought it was even funnier than the first time. So if you didn’t like it upon first viewing, definitely watch it again because I’ll just bet that the problem you’re having is with the MOVIE, not the RIFFING.

Actually, I think the film is a great candidate for riffing. The presence of so many NAMES alone makes it fertile ground, add the randy premise and the fact the film-makers were really trying to make a quality film, and it could be great…. but as I wrote a few weeks ago :

    oh I’m gonna regret this….

I’m sorry to say that I’m not loving CT ( at least so far ). The work is just not that good. It doesn’t have the exuberant energy of MST3K or the Film Crew ( I don’t do Rifftrax ). Neither CT film is as good as any MST3K, Doomsday Machine may be about as good as the weakest of the Film Crews.

    1. There are too many people riffing. Not enough room for each riffer. Also difficult to form a cohesive riff complex with so many voices.

2a. They are not ‘in character’. It’s just them, and as them, they are not as much fun.

2b. We do not ’see’ the riffers. An important aspect of Host segments ( even the horrid ones in Film Crew ) were for us to see the riffers outside the theater, to develop some kind of baseline relationship with them.

    3. They are too self-conscious and take themselves too seriously. Almost artsy. Hey isn’t it cool that we are a bunch of middle aged people making fun of movies. They are not really that into it, are they ?

    4. The shadowrama set up is just dreadful.

Movie selection is fine. Doomsday Machine is an amazingly horrible film. Oozing Skull was less so, but not a bad choice.

Anyway, I’m reasonable hardcore Misty. I started watching on real time at the end of season 1 beginning of season 2. I own all the DVDs, and I continue to ‘circulate’ the ‘tapes’. I’m a true believer, I love both Joel and Mike, but CT is just not doing it for me.

Now don’t get me wrong, I thought Oozing Skull was pretty darn funny but Doomsday Machine really started to bring to attention what “i’m not a medium” is talking about. The fact that no one is actually doing a “character”, i feel these films could be riffed one person or tweleve and it wouldn’t make a difference. Half of the fun of MST3K were the characters that they played and there was a big difference between Crow, Servo, and Joel/Mike and the riffs that would be given to them. In CT, any given riff could be said by any given person and it wouldn’t matter. I haven’t given up on them yet (just think about how long it took for MST to fully work out kinks) but they need to start setting themselves apart from each other (beyond the fact that Trace gets all the campy jokes). Heck, i barely tell sometimes if it’s Frank or Josh who’s riffing…

They really just need to suck it up and re-boot MST3K.

  28. Tim says:

I sort of agree with the professor..not really on the joke allotment end of things, but I think the riffs are funnier when they are done by characters we know and care about. There are no characters in CT, yet. So hopefully they decide to develop there CT persona’s more. If not, it will still be really funny, and I will be a fan, but it wont be magical the way MST was.
