Two Video Releases that May Be of Interest…

Two films by Larry Blamire — you saw him in the “Beast of Yucca Flats” documentary on Vol. XVIII and if you’re a MSTie you’ve probably seen his infamous “The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra” — are being released today by Shout Factory.

See the USA Today story about them here.

i loved the original “lost skeleton”, but didn’t really care for his follow-up “the man with the screaming forehead”. having said that, i eagerly await “the lost skeleton returns again” arriving in my mailbox from netflix.

This is of interest, but I doubt most MSTies have already seen that film since it was a limited release, low-budget film. However, the Shout! Factory DVD release should make it easy to correct that problem.

Lost Skeleton almost destroyed me in the theater due to how funny it was. I’m extremely excited to see the sequel.

Almost every one of the half a dozen or so MSTies I know have seen Lost Skeleton . . . it’s brilliant.

I was introduced to Lost Skeleton by a non-MST friend of mine and I think it was really well made, clever, and funny. It’s a must-see for MSTies. Can’t wait to see the new one. Also, I did not know that Blamire did the Coleman Francis doc on Vol. XVIII, and now that makes that a must-see/own.

@Mr. B(ob) #3… Lost Skeleton (the first one) wasn’t a tiny obscure film. It was distributed by Sony, and it was released fairly wide for a film of it’s type, just not all at once. It played at at least three theaters near me over a period of several months (It was probably just the same print being sent on to the next theater after a few weeks), only one of which was what one might call an “arthouse” theater. The other two were regular multiplexes, one even in a mall. It had a better release than MANY other independent films I’ve seen over the years, and it’s definitely the kind of movie that I would expect many many MST fans to know about already.

It kinda a sucks though that I’ve been unable to find either of the new movies in stores instead of having to order it online.

It is harder to do a good satire than most people in Hollywood seem to think. When you get it right, it looks effortless and spawns copycats.
When you get it wrong, it is painful to watch.

“Lost Skeleton” (Like “Sliemce of the Hams”) is one of those that got it wrong. Forced jokes, over acting, slow, slow pacing, made this unwatchable for me.

You have to watch good satire and learn why it works. It is very hard to do right. That is why we respect those who do it well.

Sorry, Richard, but all those reasons you listed for not liking Lost Skeleton was why I utterly adored it. Well that, and I have seen waaaaaaaaaaaay too many American International releases from the 50’s and 60’s. It was the perfect homage.

I agree with #12. I think Lost Skeleton was a wonderful tribute to the old low budget sci-fi films. I feel that it really captures the surreal”energy” of films like Robot Monster and the Creeping Terror. Sure, they could have crammed more jokes into the mix, but I think it would have lost something if that were the case. I can’t wait to check out the new one.

@10 – It is harder to do a good satire than most people in Hollywood seem to think. When you get it right, it looks effortless and spawns copycats. When you get it wrong, it is painful to watch.

You need sincerity, which comes out of a respect for what the originals thought they were doing, instead of using them for symbols of some other comic target:
The first third of LSOC gives us a near-approximation of the original 50’s movies’ earnestness (“This new science will further the cause of science!”)…And then, soon after, we get wacky improv-group scenes of aliens trying to pass themselves off as 50’s-whitebread, and hyuck-ewww!, it’s wacky Eisenhower-50’s parody, like the other 93 we’ve gotten!

And if you like that mess, unfortunately, accdg. to IMDb, Blamire, like the kid who burped at the table, has taken his one act on the road and given us four other improv-group parodies of badly-interpreted 30’s and 40’s films…Not that we’re likely to have seen any of them, and think Skeleton was the only thing he ever wrote/directed:

Oh god, Lost Skeleton… I hated that movie. It was terrible but not in a good way. It reminded me of Hobgoblins 2 that way. You can’t purposely make a “so bad it’s good” movie, it always comes out forced and cheesy.

If it wasn’t for my regular viewing of Satellite News I never would have heard of The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra and some of the other more tenuous MST3K connections mentioned here over the years. Based on the mixed reviews here it sounds like I didn’t miss much.

I loved Lost Skeleton but haven’t been able to find Screaming Forehead anywhere. Very much looking forward to the sequel and the return of Lattice and Crowbar!

@ 17 – screaming forehead is unreleased, but you should be able to find a torrent of the screener somewhere out there…
