Topic suggestion: MST3K movies that would have provided a better story than the plot used by LOST, if filmed with the LOST budget and aired on ABC over six years.
I’m not a hater or a diehard fan of LOST, but something in between. I liked the first season but stopped watching it because of all the interminable flashbacks. This idea came to me after watching “Final Sacrifice” for the first time two weeks ago, and realizing the story was about equal to the plot of LOST, give or take one shirtless model-turned-actor (Sawyer). But with a somewhat lower budget…heh heh. As I told my wife, who is watching LOST to the end, “It’s just a Mystery Science movie, stretched out over six years!”
Well, naturally, the obvious choice is episode 1011- HORRORS OF SPIDER ISLAND, which I think IS the same story (which I guess would make Babs Jacob). But I’m going to go with episode 320- THE UNEARTHLY. Who knows? Maybe somebody at the Dharma Initiative was inserting glands in polar bears!
Have at it!

I never said that everyone who sends in suggestions for discussion topics is a “fame whore” so please don’t put words in my mouth. But when we have this topic suggested for the weekend of the finale, it does make me wonder why the objective was. The topic suggestor admitied he didn’t care for LOST and essentially called the show a 6 year MST3K. So now we’ve got out of the woodwork guys who’ve seen like one or two episodes in Season 1, who just want to bash the popular thing and try to somehow make it related to MST3K?
I’ve never seen a topic trying to essentially compare MST3k with another tv show. And you never addressed my second point, why LOST? Are we going to have the same topic for Law And Order? Or 24? Or Heroes? What’s the point? Dosen’t MST3K stand on it’s own? And do we as MSTies really need to be deriding other people’s entertainment? I agree with 96, i love both shows. This entire topic seems silly.

I too suggest “Bloodlust,” but you could call it “Bloodlost.”

Oh, I give up. The person who suggested this topic did so just because they “wanted their 15 minutes of internet fame,” and could not have done it for any other reason. “Lost,” by definition, should not be discussed on an MST3K site. You know more about what is an appropriate topic on mst3kinfo.com than Sampo does. Plus, Oceania has always been at war with Eurasia.

After watching the Lost series-ending episode on Sunday and the hatred it got from many Lost fans, I’m now willing to say that the MST3K movie that has the most in common with Lost was Monster-A-Go-Go. With both entities, you are left feeling confused and a touch angry at the time you invested in it.
Oh, there was no monster…thank you VERY much.
Oh, they were dead the whole time…thanks a BUNCH.

Worst. Discussion Thread. Ever.

Controversial thread that’s for sure. Yeah, I watched one episode of Lost and decided that it was recycling old Dallas character profiles. This did not stop me from participating. More than half the threads I find fun and the others are meh but I like to read what others think so I participate. I have suggested threads many times and not one has been used and thats okay too. I only wish that folks not get personal in blogs while still expressing their own disatisfaction. Folks should really just relax.

I don’t think this thread was meant as a slam against “Lost,” just that it’s attracted such a cult following that it’s easy to tease. You could do the same thing with many other shows, what MST3K movies would have provided a better story than the plot used by _______, if filmed with a bigger budget. Gilligan’s Island? Lost in Space? The Sopranos? Have fun and lighten up, folks; none of us gets out alive.

#109 – How about the cast of Eegah in Perfect Strangers? Arch Hall could be Cousin Larry, Richard Kiel as Balki, and Roxy’s dad as their cranky boss who was also sang Hakuna Matata in the Lion King? He could do a song every week!

I held off commenting on this because I’ve never seen Lost and generally try not to get drawn into overaching story arcs (I couldn’t fight off Galactica though). In fact I rarely get to see anything more obtuse than Ni Hao Kai-Lan these days. Anyway, if you want a suggestion for a show about people trapped on a island filled with monsters and dangers how about Godzilla and the Sea Monster?
My suggestion though is Space Mutiny. A spaceship is a type of island after all and consider the plot lines to explore. Are the powers-that-be of a spaceship that passes down authority through inheritance for hundreds of years in route to some unspecified home while purposely bypassing any number of habitable worlds really the good guys? There’s a story arc right there. Railing kills would be a good way to suddenly get rid of a important character as a season ending shocker. They could make it like Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. They always had plenty of monsters and time travel stories too. Maybe Voldar could make a special guest appearance as a Viking trying to take over the ship. I like it very much.

I can’t say this is one of the best discussion threads I’ve seen, but I applaud the effort all the same. I think I’m one of minority of MSTies that actually likes(liked) LOST. That being said, I certainly don’t mind some riffing at the show’s expense. It gives me a different perspective on the LOST experience.
So…on to the thread. My choice: The Final Sacrifice. Plenty of spritual mumbo jumbo, lean on the character development, spare on the special effects. Just add millions of dollars and real actors and you have “The Final Sacrifice: The Series”.

“Hell why not have a discussion about if the sol could defeat a Star Destroyer cause it’s the 30th anniversary of Empire.”
Because the SOL would crush the Empire no-questions-asked, so there’s no discussion to be had.

I don’t watch network TV – or much of any TV anymore – so I’m sure not gonna comment on Lost as any sort of direct participant (although it certainly seems exactly like something I’d want to strenuously avoid, given my tastes) – but I do agree that this thread is pushing the bounds of relevance. If it were part of a broader discussion of MST3k as compared to modern TV or something, that would be fine, but this seems awfully specific. Sorta fun in some ways, so credit where credit is due, but using Lost as a launching point instead of the meat of the discussion would have been preferable.
We also seem to have some thin-skinned people in here. I don’t have a problem with people expressing negativity one way or another, as long as they’re open to countercriticism and capable of explaining why they feel their position is reasonable vis-a-vis other examples, trends, logical consistency, etc. I guess, though, that having serious debates would drag on and tend to cloud the intended brevity of these posts/threads. I suppose I’m used to fora where debates can go on for days or weeks, and where the typical internet rabble has to be dealt with through evidence, argumentation skills, and being able to stand your ground instead of appealing to politeness or nebulous notions of “maturity,” but obviously this is not the ideal medium for that kind of visceral back-and-forth.
Civility is a luxury on the internet, and this being a more civil site than most, let’s make the best of it – without getting mob-totalitarian on folks who want to express strong opinions.

I’ll also put in a word for story arcs. Story arcs are better than disconnected reset-of-the-week episodes, but it also must be said that story arcs can be handled incompetently and come off as confusing, aggravating, and ultimately disappointing. I think the best are shows like FarScape and Venture Brothers, in which individual episodes can usually stand on their own merits, but nevertheless contain details that further establish characters and plots without being too in-your-face about it. For that matter, Babylon 5 has a rabid fanbase because, at a time when Star Trek was doing “meh” technobabble/alien-of-the-week stuff, it instead provided a long-term story in which consequences are remembered and form the basis for new situations, just like real life – making the characters and their choices more meaningful and easier to get caught up in (for fans of space opera, anyway). Same for Firefly, except it was more strongly character-driven and more tightly written.
Star Trek as a franchise needed a reboot (not that I enjoyed it) because it had become known as a lumbering wreck of inconsistency and plot contrivances. Granted, not as bad as Andromeda where they fired the only talented writer and said “screw the integity of the story, this is now Hercules in Space,” but still. Story arcs are a good thing when handled by people with a well-rounded creative vision.

Well put.
Oh, and for Final Sacrifice. How about a character (let’s call him Rowsdower :x )
Who travels about the Great White North searching for a one-armed man who uses
donations to his cult to buy up NHL hockey franchises, eh?
