Great article. I love the AV Club. His comment about MST message boards perfectly expresses why I only lasted a year on the RiffTrax forums (or any forum I’ve ever joined, really).

I was excited when Murray announced that he was going to be covering the show. I only wish he had chosen an episode that is commercially available. Now I desperately need to see City Limits again.

#2- And you have to wonder why this episode isn’t commercially available- it’s a terrible movie without J&TB- why not make some $$$ and sell the rights to Shout!

I have been saying this for years….MST3k is “the” best show even to be on television – period! Think about it…it all started 22 years ago and thousands and thousands of fans still watch the show on a regular basis…..what of anything from 1988 is still discussed by such a wide fan base? The show is a-number 1 of anything important.

That’s like my least favorite episode.

Very good article. As has been stated, this was a middle-of-the-road episode he is discussing, which goes to show even a mediocre episode can draw in fans. Heck, my first episode was Robot Holocaust, and I still ended up loving the show. I think it had to do with avocado guy…

Great episode, great article. I’m assuming City Limits isn’t available because of the Kim Cattrall connection.

“Hodgson and company were actively engaged in cultural recycling, at a time when that was easier to do, before media conglomerates started getting stingier with their properties, lest they turn out to be valuable.”
A line that kind of sums up my whole (negative) feeling about the fact that we as fans will NEVER be able to own a “commercial” copy of every episode of this beloved show……
Hey, I love Shout Factory! as much as everybody else for obtaining the rights to MST3K, and continuing to regularly release random episodes, but COME ON, an MSRP of $59.97 (for a LOUSY 4 episodes ???) ???
I know, I know……….if I don’t like it, I don’t have to buy it (though I ALWAYS do!), but HONESTLY, doesn’t ANYONE else here EVER have a problem with paying TOP DOLLAR for episodes of a show that’s now over 20 years old ?????
(sigh!) Oh well…………off to Amazon now to place my pre-order for Volume XVIII (and BTW, just what is it with the Roman Numerals thing, anyway ?? Didn’t the NFL already acquire ALL rights to ALL uses of Roman Numerals EVERYWHERE, for like, EVER ??????) ;-)

I found the critique of the occasional negativity of the satire a bit odd. Were they really supposed to predict a Cattrall resurgence and therefore soften their take on her? Or provide a thorough, multifaceted portrayal of Morrissey in the 47 seconds that bit was on the air? This was a low-budget show dedicated to pointing out as many goofy moments in bad movies as possible. Why hold it to a standard of omniscience?

Good article. Love that he used “City Limits” as the springboard, as that was one of the first eps I ever recorded and watched over and over again until the tape broke. I know it isn’t the most widely-regarded ep in the series run, but I have a personal fondness for it that is tied to the point where I discovered the show, much like this guy. I re-watched “City Limits” about a month ago for the first time in years, and it really held up well for me.
