“Happy trees guy?” Really? Mike, Bill and Kevin don’t trust us to know Bob Ross? If I ever see a jump-suited, square-jawed white guy with blond hair, I’ll say, “Hey, it’s the second host of Mystery Science Theater 3000.”

They did that in the last short too, where I also wished for a reference by name. I guess they don’t realize that Bob Ross is actually a rather current reference amongst internet geeks, mainly for his godlike mellowness. From sci-fi chatrooms to LOLcat-style picture captions, I’ve seen his name, image, and legacy crop up in more than a few unexpected places online. It’s all part of the “awesome” meme where something is enjoyed both ironically and unironically at the same time.

I would guess that “Happy Tree Guy” would ring a bell with more people than saying “Bob Ross”. Many people saw an episode or two of his show, but weren’t devoted fans. Similarly, not all MSTies spend their days surfing the net, or watching re-runs of painting shows on PBS.
I really don’t think it’s a big deal. It’s not like they say: “Hey, look! It’s that one guy who used to appear in the “Red in the Silent Spot” bits on TV back in the 1960s!”

Isn’t this just another version of “A Date With Your Family”?

    No.

It was oddly depressing stuff. The Japanese and the Mexican family are shown preparing actual food, as well as they can. The American housewife piles a shopping cart with cardboard boxes.
