RiffTrax: The Trading Card

Our buddy Len Peralta at Jawbone Radio is currently working on an art project called “Geek A Week” in which every week he turns an influential “geek” into a trading card. This week, it’s RiffTrax. Click on the thumbnails below to be taken to Len’s web pages for them.

Len tells us that a Cinematic Titanic card is also in the works.

    That’s cool.

On a different note: Something that’s been bugging me for a while. But was there ever plans for Mystery Science Theater 3000 the comic book? I seem to remeber seeing an ad once about ten or fifteen years ago in a Previews catalog for a MST3K comic book and the cover was Mike and the bots commenting on a scene from a 1960/70’s Magnus: Robot fighter or Turok comic book.

The comic book thing sounds like one of the projects Valiant had in the pipelines before the speculator bubble burst and killed them. But there’s nothing I can confirm. Any other comic buffs out there?

Yeah, I remember seeing MST3K the graphic novel being a project years ago in an issue of Wizard. After a few years of not seeing anything I looked it up to see what happened. It fell into the list of CANCELLED projects from that publisher. Previews often have solicitations for projects that can still be cancelled before the street date. I’ve seen it far too often. MST3K the comic was not to be. Sadly.

Here is a little more information about the proposed comic, from our FAQ section:

Q: I also remember some talk about an MST3K comic book. What’s the deal on that?
A: There was some discussion of an MST3K “graphic novel” from Acclaim that would have Mike and the bots riffing on old Gold Key and Dell comics. It should be noted, however, that it always looked unlikely that MST3K’s writers would actually take part in writing the comic book. Unfortunately, in a repeat of the Voyager situation, Acclaim announced a cutback in its comics production, and one of the casualties was the MST3K comic. At one point, Acclaim officials said they were considering putting the comic on Acclaim’s website, but it never happened.

Pretty neat. (The trading cards, that is – not the cancellation of the comic boo-er, graphic novel).

  13. SAVE FERRIS says:

I agree, “Fancy Man”……….Mike (and Bill), in my opinion, are poor likenesses……..Kevin, on the other hand, looks somewhat “Keviny”……

Then again, I couldn’t draw ANYONE’s likeness, if my life depended on it !!!!!

Ok, I’m just glad to see that there at one time was a proposed comic book. For a while I thought maybe I’d dreamed it or something.

I think they’re pretty decent likenesses of all three of the guys!

I think they are supposed to be “mostly” like the guys but also somewhat like the Plan 9 characters :)

    # 16 Erik: I’m glad you said that! I initially had that impression too, but figured it was probably just me.
