I’m not familiar with Mr. Lileks. What sort of books does he write?

Kinda sucks they skipped Spidey 2 cause it really deserves a good riffing. But thinking about it, Spidey 1 and especially 3 seem to have more cheesy elements for riffage. Still, i hope they dont skip other sequels or leave them hanging. ie. Lord of the Rings. :)

James Lileks is a long-time columnist for several newspapers in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St. Paul) and elsewhere. He has also written some fiction, but he’s probably best known to the world as the proprietor of lileks.com and as the author of several hilarious commentary books on 30s through 80s culture. Look him up on Amazon, especially “The Gallery of Regrettable Food” and “Interior Desecrations”. Lileks.com has a M-F log called “The Daily Bleat” where he talks about just about anything, and an extensive section called “The Institute of Official Cheer” where he makes fun commentary on a whole host of things. That was the launching pad for his latest books.

    Sitting Duck:

James Lileks writes books that make fun of (for example) old nasty recipe books from the 1940’s-1960’s, atrocious interior designs from the 1970’s, and ill-advised parenting books from the 1950’s.

It should also be mentioned that Lileks is well-known for what some might characterize as rather extremist political commentary.

  8. I’d expect he’s participating in order to bring teh funnay, not knee-jerk right-winginess – and his “Gallery Of Regrettable Food” has successfully made me eject liquids and solids from my nose, so there’s that. This is actually a shockingly refreshing choice.

I’ll take a Hercules sand-storm over a twister-omelet any day of the week. That was some deep hurting.

I avoided watching Spiderman 3 for the longest time because of all the bad reviews it got. When I finally got around to seeing it and was surprised that it was pretty good.

  11. Bruce says:

The notion that Lileks’ extremely mild right-of-center opinions are “extremist” really goes to show how completely frootloopy the Internet left has become. *sigh* Mike Nelson carries pretty much the same opinions, btw, so better toss your DVDs now, for the sake of ideological purity.

sure would be nice if we can leave the dirty, filthy, rotten-stinkin’, theivin’, lyin’ vulture-and-cockroach infested world of politics in the gutter where it belongs, and not drag our beloved mst3k into it!

Lileks writes at buzz.mn as well, which is part of his job for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. Political commentary is rather minimal. I’m guessing the Spider Man 3 commentary is as well.

Look, if Mike can get fellow Minnesotan and staunch Democrat Garrison Keillor for Rifftrax and he can be as bi-partisan as Mike (note to CT: paying attention?) I’m on board.

  14. FordPrefect says:

Rifftrax is skipping Spider-Man 2 because James Lileks specifically requested to riff Spider-Man 3 with Mike. I’m sure if the other two riffs continue to sell well, they’ll probably eventually do the second movie.
