Now Available from RiffTrax…

Here’s a preview…

Download it here.

As with the riffs for “Star Wars” and “The Empire Strikes Back,” the guys riffed the Special Edition of the movie. In other words, if you own “Return of the Jedi” on DVD, have the right version.

    Finally!!

I sure hope they do The Clone Wars, too. Even though it’s animation, that really shouldn’t matter anymore.

(No, I don’t expect them to do the Ewok movies. Those might break them.)

The original version of Return of the Jedi was released on dvd as well. I think they mean to say that they are riffing on the version with the crap computer animated re-do’s from the 90’s.

Yes, the worst one of the original trilogy. Rip those Ewoks apart!!! My Star Wars listing from good to really, really bad, V, IV, III, VI, I, II (though I and II are pretty close to being “Howard The Duck” level.

  4. Wampa Joe says:

The original was only released as the second disc in a two-pack with the Special Edition. So if you have it on DVD, you already have the Special Edition.

    Excellent.

I hope they do Return of the King eventually.

    The circle is now complete.

And yes, Return o the King next. Then some more Harry Potter. I can only watch those with Mike and the guys, its like the movie was never finished if I see it without them riffing over my shoulder.

For a long time, my Christmas Day tradition (since I’m Jewish and there’s nothing on TV) was a Star Wars marathon.

I may have to make it a Rifftrax Star Wars marathon from now on.

This sounds great, but everything for me is boiling down to Hayden’s ghost appearing at the end. Rip’em a new one!

They have a lot of loose ends to tie up, in truth, not just this and Return of the King. Which I really hope they get round to. I was forced to watch it twice in the theater by my then-BF (although I was at least able to time a necessary bathroom trip the 2nd viewing) and it would do my heart good to hear Mike, Kevin, and Bill at least pretend to treat the movie with the disrespect it merits.

No way Episode III is better than I or II. Even the Rifftrax boys, as I remember, have a hard time putting up with Anakin’s whining while keeping their cool. Bill Corbett got his revenge with a savage reference to Episode III in the Rifftrax to Star Wars:

LUKE: How did my father die?
    BILL: Without dignity.

    Nope, not a scrap.

But what about “American Thrift Part 2”? And the 2nd half of the gas-station attendant thing? C’mon, not finishing off a movie trilogy is one thing, but not finishing off a ten minute short is quite another.

Alright this is the reason I needed to buy the crappy cg splattered rerelease on dvd. Up until now I`ve stuck with the vhs box set that was released with the original version right before the update went to theaters. Jedi happens to be my favorite of them all, but I say have at it guys!

To be fair, the ROTJ special edition has the least amount of add ons out of the whole special edition trilogy.

  12. Really? I thought that honor belonged to Empire.
Jedi is the one that bothers me the most, anyway. The additional scenes on Episode IV can be skipped, but the fact that two of the songs were changed in Jedi, not to mention the blatant removal of the actor who originally played the Ghost of Christmas Anakin.

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about that. It has been, literally, several years since I last watched any Star Wars movie.

    I are excited.

Much as I enjoy SW from before the splurge of expanded-universe mostly-crap and uninspired prequels, it’s still a phenomenon that can be simultaneously enjoyed for its charm and mocked for its odd idiosyncrasies. It takes a riffing and keeps on . . . um . . .

    . . . um . . .

Anyway, I hope they do better with this one than with ESB. Their treatment of the original was very good, but I felt like their standards slipped for the second. Their clever savaging of the absurd implications in ANH was so much better than the juvenile and/or “hey look at that” level of humor they too often resorted to in ESB.

ROTJ has always been my favorite, obvious flaws (i.e. nearly everything on Endor) aside.

Unless you kept the original edition and put the ‘special’ edition in the microwave for a few seconds.

sounds really nice. I’m a big movie and a selfmade movie fan.
    I am curious about it!
    Where can I order it?
    Ebay? Amazon?
I want to buy the special edition.

I like Jedi, might be my favorite of the first 3, I’m not sure why people hate it so much. Well, okay Ewoks…. whatever. But even still there’s alot of good stuff in it.

  28. Finnias Jones says:

In keeping with the old MST truism stating “The worse the movie, the better the riffing,” ROTJ is probably the funniest Rifftrax of the original trilogy. Being familiar with the prequels helps, as many of the jokes involve the retconning of the series mythos and the glaringly obvious (and unconvincing) redux SFX inserts.
The whole film feels rushed and cheap, and the script/dialog contain all the weaknesses Lucas would embrace more fully in the later films. I recall being disappointed in this film when it first came out, and I was one of the biggest Star Wars fans I knew. This time around I could swear it was missing a reel cause it seemed so inconsequential (turns out I was remembering much better moments from “Empire Strikes Back”). Time has not been kind to ROTJ. If it’s your favorite, good on ya.
Like others here, I hope this means RT will finish the LOTR with Return of the King (also my least favorite of the trilogy). Looking forward to the inevitable Avatar riff (there are a couple nods to it here).

New favorite obscure prog-rock reference: Vader enters Emperor’s throne room, flanked by red-hooded goons
Kevin: Early Genesis concert, already in progress.
Bill (sings): Watcher of the skies…

And a good MST callback later, when the emperor stands to challenge Luke,
    Kevin: “Brain Guy?”

I’m a sucker, RotJ is my favorite of the three earlier films. However, I do agree with people saying this was the funniest of the Original 3 Rifftrax.

I saw Jedi as a kid and love it to death. I have to admit, I don’t even think about the prequels or anything since when I hear the name Star Wars. Just the original trilogy. I’ll take it, Ewoks and all.

  31. mikek says:

I like Ewoks as well, but I do wish that there were some shots of the Ewoks executing proper strikes on the Stormtroopers. There needn’t have been split skull or anything, but just a stabbing or two. All we see in the movie are midgets in fur lightly hitting extras in plastic costumes.
