Well, Mr. Bromley starts off with a mistake: the show went from Comedy Central to Sci-Fi.
Since he got that wrong right off the bat, I didn’t bother to read the rest of the article.

Actually, Mr. Bromley’s review is really good and positive It is also true he made what has to be one of the most unforgivable MST3k mistakes, but I believe the guy was still in single digits of age when the show was on the air. He probably became a fan from the DVDs and YouTube and got his background info from Wikapedia. Thanks to Shout! for the ads and promotions, the show is becoming way more visible than in the RHINO days. Remember a few months ago the two teens and their full of misinformation podcast. Slowly, but surely, the young generation are discovering the joys of MST3k.

Regarding Mr. Archer (the second review), I give him credit for being honest and giving both pros and cons to the CT release. I agree with him in fact that the “host segments” are not really good. I do however disagree about Mary Jo. I like that there is a woman on the show to get that voice across. I think it adds diversity to the riffs.
Still, it was a fair review.

I have no problem with the concept of a woman being a part of the cast. I simply dislike Mary Jo’s delivery. Her writing is obviously brilliant…but, her presence in CT as a riffer really bothers me. I think the review was right on the money.
I loved that Frank got much deserved praise. He is awesome on CT.
I actually think the reviewer had it 100% right:
Joel, Frank and Trace…..that’s what CT should be from a performing standpoint.
Just my two cents.
Again, Mary Jo gets props forever as a writer of my favorite show ever. Just never enjoyed her delivery.

I like Mary Jo very much. She was always my favorite cast member from the Sci-Fi era, and the main reason I tuned in. As for her riffing delivery, I’m not bothered by her style at all. She’s doing a great job as far as I’m concerned. And I like Josh, too.

To me Mary Jo is one of the bright spots of CT. I’m sorry but Josh slightly irritates me; I’m pretty indifferent to Frank; Trace is fine, and for some strange reason, Joel isn’t funny to me anymore.

While I think MJ sounds a little stiff on the DVDs, she was the standout of the live show to me. A number of riffs that got such a strong reaction even the other Titans had to give her props during the show.
For me, she just needs to relax a little bit on days they film.
Then again, what do I know?

While I didn’t care for her on the show (Pearl had her moments, true, but they were just moments), I love her riffing. I agree, having a woman in on the riffing just gives it a different flavor and is welcome, and I think her riffing delivery is excellent. The Rifftrax she’s done with Bill are great.
I’m surprised he didn’t mention Trace much, as I have found in the previews that he is the best riffer by far of the group. He’s always been my #1 pick to guest on Rifftrax.

Not having had seen many of the SyFy era episodes prior to CT (my cable co. didn’t carry it), Mary Jo was a bit of an unknown quantity. I have to say I really, really enjoy her work with CT. Having a female voice is good for diversity and all, but I think she is extremely funny and look forward to more SyFy episodes being released from Shout!.
As for Josh, I started watching MST the first season and always thought he was good. I’m one of the few “the more first season releases the better” fans. A minority to be sure, but a silly minority. Plus, he’s closest to my age, so his sense of humor seems close to mine.
Love the rest of the cast, but in all fareness, Trace has maybe always been my favorite. He’s always reminded me of Graham Chapman from Monty Python, my favorite Python.

Odd, I really think Josh is one of the best Titans during the shows and the releases. He has a really sharp wit and great timing and presence.
It may just be what I’m used to, but I kind of agree that CT has too many voices, and would prefer it being whittled down to Joel, Trace, and Josh (MST3K KTMA era all over again!)
That being said, I’ve had fun with CT over its short time, and I wouldn’t want to cut out Mary Jo and Frank from the fun. It’s not them specifically that are bad, I just think having five people on a movie is a bit much. Kind of breaks up the rhythm…
Now they’ll shoot off a bunch of great episodes where everyone gets their say and I’ll look like a fool…but I’ll enjoy being proved wrong!

@ Skiptastic (#10): “Odd, I really think Josh is one of the best Titans during the shows and the releases. He has a really sharp wit and great timing and presence.”
I agree with that. He also seems to deliver more riffs than any of the other individual Titans (although I don’t know if that’s a matter of line assignment or writing). And I like his laconic delivery.

I think what Mary Jo, Josh and Frank have done is very commendable! They really are ‘newbies’ compared to Joel and Trace…I fully expect them to find their true riffing voice in 2 or 3 years(same thing happened with Kevin Murphy, he just seemed lost in his 1st season of MST3K)
I never expect Joel to be ‘roll on the floor funny'(like say….Gallagher or Carrot top), I like his observations and wit and when he does say something over the top funny, it really stands out.

I like the whole setup, but I do feel like Frank really shines in this setup. Regardless, I think they have really improved with each outing. Santa Claus v Martians is my current favorite CT installment.

I have to say I think they all shine best live. I love each individual and I’m happy they’re all in the mix!

Why are these reviews, supposidly written by “fans of the show” always so full of basic errors. We are not talking about the name of the third grip, the secind half of season three. We are talking about show history and on screen talent.
“Joel Hodgson, Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and company . . .”
What? This is the first season of Gilligan’s Island and we are to all sing “and the rest . . .”
Why not just “Mike, Joel and the bots.”
Or would only a fan know that?
That said, this is another lackluster offering from a great organiztion that is trying to do well by mistiees. These films were chosen, I am sure, because of “rights” issues, but does the Finnish trilogy really come with such leagal baggage? Is “The Day the Earth Froze” and “Jack Frost” really tied up in estate issues?
Keep up the good work Shout.
