Update: Joel got interviewed on a St. Louis morning show and attempted humor on the part of the hosts ensued:
Also, here’s an Q&A with Joel.
The press has started in advance of the Cinematic Titanic show this weekend.
There’s this from the Riverfront Times…
Off topic, I know, but I want to ask how, honestly, there has been absolutely NO coverage of the fact that host segments and clips of riffing are now available on MST3K.com in the genesis section from THE FIRST THREE KTMA EPISODES, PREVIOUSLY BELIEVED TO BE LOST FOREVER. At the very least, I would expect the episode guide to be updated.
I sent an email, but it’s apparently been ignored or at least no one’s gotten to it yet. I’m surprised that someone else, let alone all MSTies everywhere, haven’t pointed this out. (Then again, going to MST3K.com isn’t exactly worthwhile anymore.)
So, yeah…bits and pieces of episodes 1-3, including most of the host segments, are now available. You can find these parts on YouTube, too.
Enjoy. Circulate the link.

By coverage, by the way, I mean by this site. I’m not expecting that this should be making national headlines or anything like that.
I mean, it should be, but it’s a tad more understandable that it’s not happening.

Oh, and yes, I’m aware that Mallon’s confirmed the existance of these episodes in the Featured section. I added the “believed to be lost forever” bit on the basis that one: they were, until last year; two: the rights issues might have created doubt that Mallon would be able to put parts online (at least riff-related parts); and three: dramatic emphasis.
Perhaps my first post was a tad hasty. I apologize.

Those files have been on the site for months… and there was an announcement way back when.

I’m finding it difficult to even care about CT anymore. None of their live shows come anywhere near where I could reasonably drive to. Second, since they haven’t put out any new DVD’s in months, basically ignoring a good chunk of their core fans, I’ve decided to ignore them. Not trying to start an argument or anything. Love their work, but am very let down by them for this and I know I’m not alone.

Hey Capt., I’m with you on this. I get very disheartened by CT at times. The blogs are few and far between and we only get the vague hints about when they might release new DVDs. They’re so focused on the live shows. While I’m sure that the shows are a blast, they’re too far away to travel and even if they were close by I might be able to see one show with my wife (but that’d a couple of hundred dollar expence between tickets and travel and such) I’d absolutely love to buy more DVDs, I just hope they don’t wait until too late in the Christmas season.

To clarify for all the complaining people saying “They don’t tour near me”, CT doesn’t really make that decision.
Venues contact them and ask them to come, then based on that, they go or don’t.
So the real question is this: Why aren’t you contacting local venues demanding to see CT in your town?
As for more DVDs: If you’ve read their forum, you’d surely have read that there will be some movement on this issue after their current tour has ended. Part of the reason they haven’t released discs is because they wanted to keep some things fresh for their live show, and further refine the material they already had.
On a personal level, I can’t blame them for being conscious about market oversaturation and pumping too much “product” into the marketplace (which IMHO is the problem with Rifftrax… not that I’m NOT a fan of Rifftrax.)

Tarantulas,
As far as touring goes, how the heck are we supposed to go about getting them booked? I live in central Michigan, the two closest larger cities are Grand Rapids (the second-largest city in MI) and Lansing (the capital and home to Michigan State University). Am I supposed to start calling every possible venue, not knowing the size and logistics involved, not knowing what kind of following they even have in MI?
Live shows, I’m sure, are great fun and bring in money (both wonderful things and I’m happy for them), but they are a huge expence for some people. Even if they were able to tour near everyone, not everyone can afford it. Like I said above, if they were near, I might be able to swing two tickets and all the other expences… once. I would have loved to have been in LA and seen every one of the five shows, but I’d have needed a second mortgage to do so. I can buy a DVD and watch it dozens of times (as I have with the seven released so far). Live shows should be ancillary to DVD releases.
As for DVD releases, I don’t think anyone is demanding they release a DVD every month, but the four or so we were getting a year was working well. They haven’t released anything since March.
I know I’m going against popular sentiment of those who get miffed when anyone dares to question these decisions, but I feel it’s within my purview, as a fan, to wonder (calmly and respectfully) why a segment of the fan base is being, at the very least, minimalized.
I have been to the CT forum, but the all forum is filled with is more vague rumors and “well, sometime before Christmas”. I would just like some straight answers once and a while.

@Tarantulas: When was the announcement made? I searched through old news posts for a long time before coming to the conclusion that this site had made no such announcement. It is, of course, possible that I was horribly wrong, and that something escaped my notice, and if that is the case then I apologize for pitching a fit. It also doesn’t help that the episode guide still has no information on them.
Back on topic…I don’t really pay attention to or purchase anything from the crew post-MST3K. I still haven’t seen as much of the original show as I would like and, on top of that, I don’t really buy DVDs. My local library has all fourteen volumes and just about every episode is available on YouTube. So while I would love to see a live show (and maybe even have my ratty old Pod People VHS signed), it doesn’t bug me that much. However, I do agree that if you do want to see a live show you should find some sort of venue to at least recommend them to. In all odds one place might get enough emails and the like to consiter booking them.

@Super Agent Icky Elf: How the heck are you supposed to get them booked? Use Google, look for venues in a large town near you. Call the venue, talk to the event coordinator. Fans requesting shows is a huge factor in the type of entertainment that makes it to your area. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Huge expense? This is a luxury we’re talking about, not food on your table or heat in your home. $20 for a DVD, or $20 for a live show were you get to connect with other fans, support CT directly, and meet the men (and super cool lady) that makes it all possible. And you get to keep your pictures, autographs, and memories for a life time. Any argument against this is just whining.
As for the “vagueness” of CT public announcements: They are. I agree 100%. However, I’ve never NOT had a question answered when posed directly to the CT crew. They are a nice group of folks, and are well connected online (except Joel, who lives on a cave on the moon).

@Wack’d: 1st mention is on March 24th (https://www.mst3kinfo.com/?paged=28)
I think a few images trickled out to the MST3K.com website a couple days after this announcement.
The 2nd mention (which is a post dedicated to this topic) happened on July 16th (https://www.mst3kinfo.com/?paged=14). From here on, everything that you can see in the Origin’s section currently was there. They may have added the video where Kevin is talking about the wall between the twin cities, but I think it’s been there since pretty much the beginning.
So there you have it… 2 announcements.

Tarantulas,
I knew when I posted this a.m. that it devolve into a “flame-war”, as it always does when anyone ventures an opinion other than: “Whatever CT/Rifftrax/Shout! says must be the correct opinion”.
I AM NOT “HATING” ON CT!!!! I love each and every one of them and would more than happily go to a show, meet them, shake their hands, give them hugs, and thank them, with tears in eyes, for the literally thousands of hours of joy they have given me and my wife (my wife and I started watching MST3K when we were dating in high school, we’ve been married for seventeen years…MST means the world to us). All that I am saying and have ever said in prior posts, is that WE as fans are missing out and THEY as proprietors of entertainment are marginalizing a segment of their fanbase.
And don’t make generalizations about how much money is too much for someone else. Tickets for the live shows are more than $20, they tend to run about fifty, the nearest large city is a two hour round trip, dinner, parking, merchandise, etc. so a night out for a show isn’t going to cost $40 and bucket of popcorn.
So, apparantly you have a “bat-phone” to the CT folks that you can have instant answers to all your CT questions, maybe you can ask when a DVD is coming out. Because I posed a question on the CT forum asking this and all I got was “no new news” for another fan. Heck, even RAD rarely posts anymore.

Here Tarantulas, I started a new topic on the CT forum… maybe it’ll help me stop “whinig”.
“After having a flame-war over on the Satellite News site about CT not touring close to me, can anyone suggest a way to make that happen. He (I assume it was a “he”) suggested I call all the venues in the two large cities closest to me and ask to speak to the event planner. Not knowing anything, about anything really, but specifically about staging a live event, what’s the logistics? What size theatre? Does it need a stage? What kind of audio set-up is needed. What if the event planner has never heard of CT or MST3K for that matter. How can I help “drum-up” support from local fans? How do I know how many CT fans even live in my state?
If more and more of CT’s focus is on touring and seemingly less and less on DVDs, what can I do to help.”

Regarding contacting venues…
I worked for Sony music for years and also worked briefly on the Prairie Home Companion tour. Good luck calling a venue, getting ahold of the booking manager and then convincing them to sign a show they haven’t heard of. This will only work if you gather a petition and have 500+ local people sign it noting they will attend the show. G Love & Special Sauce fans did this in a few cities and it worked. But 1-10 people calling the Taft in Cincinnati (my town) and asking them to book CT will do nothing. I’m not being mean, I’m just adding insight from someone that has worked in the business and knows the ropes.
CT has as agent. This is their job to book. Bug CT to move outside their current tour into other markets. In their defense CT has a listing of where their DVDs have been sold. If they sold 900 DVDs in San Francisco and 10 in Cincinnati then it gives them an idea of the response they would have to a live show. They have to give a guarantee on seating (as per most contracts) and if they played Cincinnati and drew squat, then they lose money.
Also, I agree with all that have said that CT is screwing up on the DVDs. They concentrate on their assured live market and in the meanwhile people are forgetting them outside of their niche as they aren’t putting out new product. I have to hand it to Rifftrax. Whether you like them or not, they keep a continuous product flowing so their name is always out there. CT comes off as a side-project that’s being done for a select few and it’s hurting them. You don’t believe me? Go back over the posts on the site. Initially for live events they were getting dozens of unique posts per announcement. Now it’s dwindling to 10+ unique posts per news item.
and also…. sleeeeeeeeep!

@Super Agent Icky Elf: I’m not flaming you. What I’m saying is that CT rolls though here about once a year. That’s plenty of time to save $100 for a tickets and whatever money you’re going to require for gas, jujubees, popcorn, candy bars, soda, nachos, hot dogs, pizza, and whatever your significant other might want (it’s a Mama’s Family joke – before you fly off the handle). What I’m also saying is this: nothing ventured nothing gained. The reason why CT comes to St. Louis (St. Charles really) is because the event coordinator of the venue is a fan of MST3K. If you called 10 venues in your area and said “bring CT to town” and it fell on 9 deaf ears, what about the 10th person who brings them in for a show? Also, you’re not planning the event (which you don’t seem to understand based on your response), you’re providing an idea. You might mention the success they’ve had in Chicago, St. Louis (again, really it’s St. Charles), and LA.. and the upcoming show on New Years Eve in Philly.
Again, CT doesn’t rent the hall and put on a show, the venue pays them to come and do a show. Blame your venue for being a “dim bulb”, not CT.
Also, RAD has made 5 posts in the last 2 days on the CT forums and updated his Facebook a couple times as well. The rest of the CT crew is active on FB / Twitter. Look them up there (except Joel, who again, is on the moon).

@Dr. Carlo Lombardi: Calling a venue, and possibly connecting with a fan of MST/CT is what I did.. and guess what, they’re coming back a 2nd time (I’m not claiming credit, but I did what was in my power to let them know that I’m excited about CT, and wanted them to be excited too). Sure CT likely won’t be able book a show in smaller markets for a myriad of reasons, but people who live 2 hours outside of Chicago whining that it’s too much trouble to brave city traffic to see them live are NEVER going to be satisfied with where they play.
You make mention that Rifftrax keeps the level of product continuous. I counter that the quality of their product is sometimes lacking and comes off as a cash grab rather than a refined product I can watch again and again. This isn’t a Mike v. Joel debate… I drove 4 hours to see the Rifftrax Live event a month or so back. Cranking out a new track for every flavor of the week DVD release mocks the consumer with a never ending barrage of “product” the waters down riffing to the point where you just are exhausted trying to keep up. In the end, it just all ends up being an endless parade of “product,” which I personally find disappointing. iRiffs isn’t helping things either. I’m sure they make a good profit from it, which is all well and good. As for “being in the news,” I can flash my vajayjay as much as the next starlet, but after the 20th time you saw Britney’s, did you even care any more?

We have agents who are working to get us booked all over the country in places we haven’t been, there will be announcements soon about upcoming shows. One of the reasons we often go back to places we’ve played already is because we have an established track record there and it’s easier to get booked there. There are lots of places we haven’t played that we would love to play, there’s is nothing we would like more than to play shows for all of our fans in as many places as possible but some of it is out of our hands, but we are working towards that goal. And there will be more DVDs released very soon. Please keep in mind that we are running our own business, we don’t have a company behind us, so we can’t always make things happen in an orderly fashion because we are all disorderly creative types and the business side does not come easily to us. To the fans who are disappointed by our sporadic output I can only say that we can’t think of anything to do but what we’ve been doing: working our asses off to create an entertainment product that we are very proud of.

Clearly the CT guys are disconnected from their fans!
Wait, Frank just posted? Nevermind.

tarantulas,
Perhaps I over-reacted. It seems every time I post a comment that goes against the “status quo”, I (or the others sharing my opinions) get jumped on by the contrary side.
I apologize for taking things too far.
It’s only because I love CT so much I can’t wait for more. We watch something MST/CT/Film Crew/RiffTrax nearly every day; it’s kind-of our DVD version of a “comfort food”. I really want CT to do well and continue far into the future.
That being said, is there something that can be done to see where fan interest is in different parts of the country. For instance, how many MI fans would be interested in seeing a show in either Lansing or Grand Rapids? I know two (my wife and I) and I know another person that might… anymore out there??
Might make a good weekend discussion thread: What cities can CT fans get to for a show?

All opinions are welcome… I too watch something CT/MST/RT/FC related on a daily basis, so I understand what it’s like when your collection feels a bit “well watched.”
More cool things are in the pipeline to be sure.

I just bought tickets for the New Years eve show at the Keswick and am wondering how many others out there may be in attendance?
When you crunch the numbers, how many people in the area are fans, who will give up a big party night with friends to sit in a theater for maybe over 6 hours to watch bad movies for $52.50?
So give a “HOLLA!”

I am going to Keswick from Northern VA. I think I would not have travelled that far if I wasn’t getting 3 shows for about 1.5x the normal price. Though the News Years Eve timing gave me pause because of traffic/drunk driver concerns. Also, this is probably the big out of the house event for me for about a year. I went to Rifftrax first show, but that was only a 20 minute drive and I was not interested in the Holiday short theme for the second. Also, thanks Frank for commenting and reaching out!

They need to put out more dvds or at least downloads like Rifftrax does. I’m not going to any shows, but I gladly bought all their dvds and will buy future dvds. CT is becoming a nonentity to me.

That Joel interview was cool. 2 comments:
1. It’s cool that Drew Carey is a fan of MST3K.
2. WHY did Joel call Trace “Scott”?

the funny thing is that the newscaster’s attempts to do riffs like “look at this guy” are pretty much what the early episodes are like.

Like the Q&A with Joel. I felt one questions kind of over-the-line in my opinion. Crow and Tom wouldn’t fight WALL*E, robots are peaceful creatures.

SCOTT?

I sincerely doubt Joel called his friend of 20+ years Scott. Based on the rest of it, I’d say it was one of a few typos.

A typo? How do you get “Scott” from “Trace”?
EPIC FAIL

That is one messed up spell check.

A friend of mine told me that if Joel really did call Trace “Scott”, it could be just a weird in-joke that only Joel and Trace would get.

Typo as in a nicer way of saying F-up. He probably misheard his recording of the interview.

Glad you guys liked the Q & A on ReviewSTL.com. You were right – Joel said “GOT” – rather than “Scott,” but the volume was very low at that point. I kept playing it back, and finally I did hear he said “I got Trace, who was the original Crow.” That obviously makes much more sense.
Anyways, I digress. The CT show on Saturday was great! I had a blast! Can’t wait to see the show next time it comes to town. Big thanks to Joel for taking the time to talk to us.
