Weekend Discussion Thread: Ideas for Future Shout Factory Sets

Alert reader David Finn writes:

Last weekends topic of the Russo-Finnish films generated a universally loved idea for a DVD box set of the 4 films. This got me thinking about other ideal groupings of MST episodes. Granted this is mere wishful thinking as neither Shout nor Rhino have used common themes to organize previous sets. But we can fantasize…
A few to start us off… juvenile delinquents, hypnotism, made-for-TV, Corman, Lippert, kaiju…

All good ideas! Let hear some more!

To follow the bad monster costume set:

    Monsters uh Go! GO!
    Creeping Terror
Attack of the Eye Creatures (my favorite Joel Ep.)
    Blood Waters of Dr. Z
    Robot Monster

    Another Time, Another Place
    Alien from LA
    Outlaw
    Cave Dwellers
    Time of the Apes

    (Screw) the World
    Final Sacrifice (Insult Canada)
    Final Justice (Insult Malta)
    The Projected Man (Insult Britain)
Invasion of the Neptune Men (Insult Japan… and the audience’s attention span)

How about a “Children Control the World and Have Level-Five Clearance” box-set featuring:
    -The Space Children
    -Prince of Space
    -Invasion of the Neptune Men
    -Final Sacrifice

I have to second the idea of a Gamera set.

    Gamera
    Gamera vs Barugon
    Gamera vs Guiron
    Gamera vs Zigra

and maybe a bonus fifth disc of Gamera vs. Gaos

Gamera is a friend to all children!

Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in.

Director/producer ROBERT L. LIPPERT, such a part of MST3K history (especially early on), deserves a boxed set. A couple of posters above listed these films but I want to expand a bit as some of these episodes feature catch-phrases or host segments that became MST classics. The letter grades are from Mighty Jack’s episode reviews.

    201- ROCKETSHIP X-M A-
First appearance of TV’s Frank and Kevin Murphy as Tom Servo. Plus Mike makes his first on-screen appearance, as Valeria – “You and your daughter are doomed.”
    203- JUNGLE GODDESS B-
Dull, racist and offensive but features the classic line uttered by our heroine: “I could sure go for a charbroiled hamburger sammich and some french-fried potatoes.”
    208- LOST CONTINENT C+
Dull, but features the unforgettable “Rock climbing!” sequence.
    210- KING DINOSAUR B+
Dull and offensive to all lovers of animal life (SPOILERS: the humans NUKE the “dinosaurs” at the end). Directed by Bert I. Gordon, also features host segment with Joey the Lemur.
    520- RADAR SECRET SERVICE A
Dull but fun, thanks to Mike & the Bots and the morbid Short “Last Clear Chance”. The Mads introduce us to “Hypno helio static stasis.”
611- LAST OF THE WILD HORSES B
Actually decent, if low-key Western. Host segments spoof the Star Trek episode “Mirror, Mirror.”

Which four would YOU include in a DVD box set?

    @#104:

Well, the “2 Joel/2 Mike” pattern would make 520 and 611 mandatory. I’d definitely include 210. It would be funny to have both appearances of the Joey the Lemur song in the same set.

As for the fourth… 201 is historical, but it would be nice if it could be on a set with Robot Holocaust. I think I’d go for 203. I enjoy it, and as you say, it’s the origin of one of their more frequent callbacks.

themed sets are a bad idea. They have the potential of alienating some fans who arent into the theme. Like the Russo-Finnish crap

Okay, at first glance, my list could be seen as a Japanese set, or a Sandy Frank-centric set… But it’s more than that. So much, much more! Here are the movies:

    Time of the Apes
    Mighty Jack
    Fugitive Alien
    Gamera vs Gaos

The theme: Deja Viewed! These are four of the movies originally done for KTMA that were repurposed for the national edition of the show. Since Shout! would already be shelling out the licence fees for the flicks, each disc could have the “regular” version of the episode and have the KTMA version as a bonus!

#108 Kevin – to quote an underage Japanese bootblack I know, I LIKE IT VERY MUCH. Great theme, and it seems like a set that could conceivably happen. Many of us,myself included, had to reach back and grab pre-existing releases to complete a themed set.

309 – The Amazing Colossal Man
    401 – Space Travelers
    620 – Danger! Death Ray
621 – The Beast of Yucca Flats (with shorts “Money Talks!” and “Progress Island U.S.A.”)

I wanted so badly to put Episode 614, “San Francisco International”, in there. It is a favorite of mine, but I wanted to do a 2 Joel/2 Mike box.

The Beast of Yucca Flats to me is one of the top episodes out there. The two shorts before the film are so well riffed and the movie is the last of the Colman Francis flicks, so Mike and the bots have plenty to make fun of.

    “They are good in anything”
    Space Travelers (with Gene Hackman)
Revenge of the Creature (with an early Clint Eastwood)
City Limits (with James Earl Jones)
Oulaw (With Jack Palance… and I really want this one on DVD)

Looking over the ideas offered here, I realized that I like the scattered unrelated offerings that both Rhino and Shout have done because too much of one theme/style gets boring.

Isn’t that a major complaint of the first run of Sci-Fi era movies? That they were all B&W Universal monster flicks?

But simply for narrative purposes I would have to cast my vote for Mike Nelson: Destroyer of Worlds.

Yes, I basically agree. Even though I proposed this discussion topic and posted many grouping suggestions myself, I can see from a business and viewer perspective that themed sets could be monotonous and having limited appeal. I only started watching the show during Sci-Fi Channel repeats in 2002, so the “scattered unrelated offerings” of Rhino’s DVD releases introduced me to episodes I’d never seen or heard of, and introduced me to the glories of Joel, Trace, and Frank.

I’ve never seen actual sales figures for MST on DVD, but it seems that Rhino/Shout could at least TRY a theme to see how it does. Had no problem with Rhino’s Vol. 7 with two Hercules episodes, but I’m fond of the sword & sandal genre. Watching four of them in a row might have been a drag, but I’d eventually like them all in my MST library.

With all the trouble it must take to negotiate the DVD release rights for these episodes, surely a package deal with the distributors could produce a themed set profitable for everyone. Universal, Corman, Lippert, Sandy Frank, and especially the Russo-Finnish films seem prime candidates.

BUT the cynic in me says that the producers of these sets know that Misties are fish in a barrel and that we will buy anything they put out. No need for them to pursue a “Final Sacrifice” or “Pumaman” with any real effort, because they only need one or two fan favorites to sell a set. The upcoming Vol. XVI looks to be one the best sets ever, but does anyone here really crave a pristine digital copy of season one’s THE CORPSE VANISHES? I don’t, but I sure want that Tom Servo figurine…

Correction: s/b “The upcoming Vol. XVI looks to be one of the best sets ever”
Also, I’ll repeat my earlier suggestion that Shout Factory could look into higher priced limited edition sets, especially in this age of digital media.

Another long-term commercial decision that Shout must contend with is that there are are no longer any new viewers being introduced the show via TV. Why Comedy Central and SyFy (ugh – it pains me to type it) have virtually disowned this show is beyond me. Why is MST3K not shown regularly on some network somewhere? Maybe Best Brains should have its own cable/internet subscriber channel…
