Five Former Rhino Episodes Released as Digital Episodes By Shout
Posted by Sampo, on October 27th, 2009
I’m not clear on what all this means (I may have an update later), but five episodes that were formerly part of Rhino Home Video sets have been released by Shout! Factory as digital-only episodes on iTunes. They eps are:
• 206- RING OF TERROR (with short: The Phantom Creeps, Part 3)
• 409- THE INDESTRUCTIBLE MAN (with short: Undersea Kingdom, part 2)
• 414- TORMENTED
• 503- SWAMP DIAMONDS (with short: What to Do on a Date)
• 1011- HORRORS OF SPIDER ISLAND
By the way, the main MST3K store on iTunes is here.
I wonder if they’re doing new transfers of the episodes. I’d would certainly like to get my hands on a better version of The Dead Talk Back.

I’m suspect, but without absolutely no proof, that all this means is BBI has licensed Shout to do digital distribution rather than have them reissue DVDs. If I remember correctly, those are all in PD, so they wouldn’t need any additional licensing.
I wouldn’t be surprised that we’ll see more of the PD movies show up on iTunes. Interesting, though that all of those episodes except Swamp Diamonds are from Volume 11; Swamp being from Volume 10.

I need the movies from the collections in 1-5. If they do that, I will buy it.

Perhaps they are testing an additional sales avenue, to see if people will buy digital version of movies. They can be downloaded onto a DVD once you purchase them, correct? I would hope so. I like the idea of that, if that were the case.

No. These are intended as computer files (playable on computers, iPods, AppleTV boxes, etc.)
From the iTunes FAQ:
“You can burn to DVD for data archiving purposes only (not for DVD playback). “

Aw man! I hate downloads! Why can’t these be on dvd? Oh, wait…

“Data archiving purposes” means backup copies. DVDs are likely going to be obsolete 20 years from now.

When Shout! took over the licensing, didn’t the press release state they had digital rights to all eps, license pending, including the Rhino episodes?
So, this shouldn’t be a real surprise. We should be happy about this.
I’m more curious about the cover art they will use. Are they going to create new posters to match the other Shout posters? I sure do hope so. I have the dvd’s but will buy a digital copy so I can look at that beautiful image in my itunes library

I don’t think this is such bad news; this means nothing more than that there are five more eps available than before to download. Shout Factory isn’t going to just drop producing dvds of the show altogether, not when it’s still the biggest source of revenue when it comes to MST. Fact of the matter is, Volume 11 is still available in stores, so there would be no point in SF doing their own dvd release.
Yes, the day will come when DVDs are obsolete, but not for the forseeable future.

Hey, I still watch a lot of VHS tape on a regular basis. I’m over 40, I’ll probably be watching DVDs ’til the day I die.

Meh. Let me know when they’re available from somewhere other than iTunes. :???:

“Yes, HORRORS OF SPIDER ISLAND.”
That’s the best episode up there.

From following the links, looks like my dream of cool cover art has been crushed. Do i dare say it? Damn you, Shout! Factory

This may be a good way to get new fans–easy to download one episode instead of buying 4 at a time.

Shout will likely be reissuing [most of] the Rhino episodes sometime down the road. Releasing some of the PD-movie episodes on Itunes in the meantime sounds like a good move I suppose.

I hate downloads. Put em on Blu Ray instead. Or whatever new fangled media shows up.
