Tom Servo Mega Man Mod

Odd coincidence dept: I’m not a gamer, so before this weekend, I had never heard of Mega Man. This weekend my daughter played me some of “The Protomen” a rock opera loosely based on the video game that’s either incredibly epic or wildly self-indulgent. I’d need more hearings to be sure which it is. It’s certainly ambitious.

Anyway, it’s weird that I would suddenly be aware of the video game Mega Man and the next day somebody would email me about a Tom Servo mod for “Mega Man 3.” More info here.

Guess it’s just going to be a Mega Man sort of week.

Thanks to Brent for the heads up.

There’s definitely a gamer sensibility and much cross-over interest between MST3K and “gaming”. MST3K did its share of jokes about “geek games” knowing it would be well understood by much of their audience.

Now what I’d like to do is get extra Tom Servo and Crow figurines and use them as Dreadnought conversions in my Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine army. That would be some serious cross-over geekdom!

Probably worth pointing out at this juncture that the article linked to is all about what a terrible romhack this is. The quest for a decent MST3K-based game mod will have to continue.

    WHAT?!!?

I LOVE Mega Man games! Those things were my bread and butter back in the days of NES. It’s nice to see Tom inserted into one the best games in the series.

  5. It’s actually pretty old. I recall finding it around ten years ago. My brother calls it blasphemy.

I still wonder what happened to the MST3K mod someone was cooking up for Duke Nukem back in the late 90’s.

It looked so promising, then the website for it vanished without a trace.

    Can’t it be both?

Speaking of MST3K games, you might be interested to know that there’s a MST3K text adventure. More accurately, it’s an interactive MSTing. You play through “Detective”, a terrible text adventure game, while Mike and the Bots riff on it. It’s actually pretty clever! You can find it here: http://www.wurb.com/if/game/146

It would be more fitting if he shot bullets while saying “hm?”

    . . .

    geek . . . capacity . . . overload . . .

Something for the ol’ Chaos Marines to truly tremble at.

Personally, I’d like to see them in Smash Brothers.

When it shows up again, will it have a bill instead? (Buh-DOOM-boom.)

As for that review, MAN… It’s the poster child for what the A.V. Club’s Nathan Rabin dubbed “everything sucksism.” You know: “Hey, look, someone created something! Let’s show how cool we are by treating it with unbridled sarcasm and contempt!”

How about a future weekend thread about MST3k fan-made games and hacks?

There was a Doom wad that replaced many of the game sounds with riffs.

I found it interesting that while exploring a ROBOTICS LAB in Fallout 3 (360) I discovered that all computer entries relating to assembly and repair of the robots were all signed by P Brantseg. MUST be a nod to MST3K.

Steve Pop: You know, I created a big, steaming dump this morning, but I don’t expect anyone to praise it no matter how much work it took me to make. Nathan Rabin trying to be cute notwithstanding, sometimes things just plain suck; like this poorly-made romhack.

I don’t remember where I got it, but I have an MST3K-themed romhack of Super Mario Bros. It’s just a change in some graphics (Mario = Joel, Goomba = Deep 13 logo, Starman = Crow’s head, and Princess = Servo), but it wasn’t as half-assed as the Mega Man 3 mod.

  17. Not the biggest fan in the world of them, but those early Mega Man games had some of the best music ever on the NES. Brings back some great memories.

Holy crap!! I love the protomen. The story in the music is really epic. they do a 2 cd rock opera. Wiki it before you listen that way you know the story while you listen. Your daughter has good taste in music….oh yeah..the mod is cool too

my love of the Mega Man games is what hooked me on MST3K. (by mistake.)

in “The Killer Shrews” when the Mads are preparing to “cleave into this puny planet” Joel asks them why they’re doing it. Frank replies, “it’s, i don’t know, a sort of… Omega Man kinda thing?” but i thought he said, “a sort of… oh, Mega Man kinda thing?”

if he had actually said the latter, the joke still would have made sense, since Mega Man’s nemesis Dr. Wily was always destroying cities for no apparent reason.

anyway, i was delighted to hear what i thought was a Mega Man reference because i figured i was one of the few who would get the joke. and i’ve been an accidental MiSTie ever since.

    Sampo, you poor poor man.

Speaking of MODS, there’s a Servo character available for Unreal Tournament. Nothing gives me more pleasure than to kick a little butt with my favorite red fireplug “TommyGun”.

Josh #16 – That’s already been done. It was called Mega Man 64, and it sucked!

I was working on an MST3k mod for duke3d back in the 90’s. It was almost completed, then I had a computer crash and I didnt have a backup. I’d still consider doing one for say, halflife2 or something

Also wow, I love the Protomen. Too bad that romhack is so bad, or I would love it as well.

I recently saw a mod for Left 4 Dead where the zombies have been replaced by Teletubbies. If anyone somehow made a mod that replaced the zombies with Torgos, I would seriously say that would be the pinnacle of crossover.
