Another EW List

Our favorite cowtown puppet show has again made an “Entertainment Weekly,” “best of” list. They came in 19th in a list of “Greatest Cult TV Shows Ever.”

Thanks to our pal Emily for noticing.

I found it amusing to see how a lot of the shows on the list are a.) very recent, b.) didn’t last very long, and/or c.) didn’t last a while. I know they have edited the list before based upon how well shows have “stood the test of time”. Come one year from now, I bet’cha a good handful of those shows will be gone.

    But woooh MST3K!

You have to remember that this is EW. To them, anything made before 2005 is ancient history. Given that, I’m surprised “The Prisoner” was listed.

@Tim – Seriously. TV Guide got them in @ #11 two years ago, and that was without the “are you sure you’re professional tv writers?” omissions of The Simpsons, Star Trek, Python, and the Twilight Zone. (Though I’ll allow a little wiggle room on the cultness of TZ).

I know these things are subjective and designed to get attention by generating debate, but honestly, for as great as most of them are, The Comeback, Chuck, Pushing Daisies, The Tick, My So-Called Life and Firefly are all just Not As Good as mst. And I’m not familiar enough with Supernatural, Veronica Mars, Profit and Farscape to judge, but what I do know suggests not all of those are better than mst.

And in the subjective area, I’m pretty sure mst could’ve landed ahead of X-Files, BSG, Twin Peaks, Freaks & Geeks (woo Josh! woo, Trace & Joel!), Buffy, and Dr. Who.

I’d like to note that I should not write things moments after waking up, because I realized my b.) and c.) are the same. Go me!

As I flipped through the rest of the list, I was very hesitant on things and why they were ranked ahead of MST. I can argue the case for our little cowtown puppet show against everything except Doctor Who. That, to me, definitely belongs in the number one spot, as it has listed a kajillion years and is still going strong.

This could make a good weekend discussion thread (with proper expansion). Something like “What else do we watch regularly?

I think MTS3k definitely deserved a top 10 as well. For me, the top 3 are Dr. Who*, MST3k, and Farscape, in that order.

    * The original series, that started in 1963 and ran for 26 seasons, not the new one. Even the BBC and IMDB consider the two as separate entities, with good reason, IMHO. For me, the new series probably wouldn’t even make the top 100

They got beet by The Comeback?! %$&# that!

Does a heavily advertised show starring one of the cast of Friends count as cult? I don’t think so.

This list just seems really lame and I cannot accept that MST3K missed the top 10. The longetivity of the series is bested only by Dr. Who.

To Gerson K: I’m with you on most of the shows you listed not being as good as MST, but I do think that My So-Called Life was an amazing show. Even with MST3K being my favorite TV show of all the times, I can’t argue with MSCL or if Freaks and Geeks being ahead of it.

Steve #7 (love those Steve jokes) I like your idea for such a thread. I would also like to know how many MST fans also like “The Wire”- I was totally enthralled by it.

I’m a huge fan of The Wire. I want to watch it again, but my dad borrowed my complete series set.

I wonder what their criteria was. Just stuff they happened to remember off the tops of their heads, maybe?

The first show most people think of, at least I would GUESS, when they hear “cult tv show” would be Star Trek and that’s not on there at all.

Farscape is light years better than Battlestar Galactica (just an opinion, but…)

I would put MST3K at least in the top 5.

I’m glad they put The Venture Brothers on there, though.

    [raises hand] LOVES the Wire.

I’m fine with where MST3K is listed (although its better than some of those listed above it). I’m actually more miffed that shows like the Prisoner and Doctor Who aren’t ranked greater. And if we’re talking about “cult” shows (and not exclusively sci-fi/fantasy only shows), where’s Monty Python?

Just so you won’t have to suffer through clicking the slideshow:

25 – Beauty and the Beast
    24 – Sports Night
    23 – The Venture Brothers
    22 – Get a Life
    21 – Police Squad
20 – The Ben Stiller Show
    19 – MST3K
    18 – The Comeback
    17 – Chuck
    16 – The Wire
    15 – Pushing Daisies
    14 – Profit
    13 – Veronica Mars
12 – The Tick (cartoon version)
    11 – Supernatural
    10 – Farscape
    9 – The X-Files
    8 – My So-Called Life
    7 – Battlestar Galactica (Sci-Fi channel version)
    6 – Firefly
    5 – Twin Peaks
    4 – The Prisoner
    3 – Freaks and Geeks
2 – Buffy the Vampire Slayer
    1 – Doctor Who

Seems like “Star Trek” should have made the list? The original series was the definition of “cult TV” wasn’t it, just because it’s gone on to become a billion dollar franchise shouldn’t preclude it from the list.

Put MST3K in place of Freaks and Geeks and the top five would be perfect. (Nothing against F&G, just never watched it.) Also, Venture Brothers deserves top ten.
