With the holidays upon us and the spirit of goodwill toward men in the air, the only presents under the tree on the Satellite of Love are four movies anyone else would return the next day. But thanks to the steady stream of wisecracks from Joel, Mike and their robot pals Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot, there are enough ho-ho-ho’s to make this the best holiday ever! So come all ye faithful and let us adore the comedy madness that is Mystery Science Theater 3000!
Continuing the celebration of Mystery Science Theater 3000’s cinematic chuckle-fest, Shout! Factory, in association with Best Brains, Inc. proudly presents Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XVI limited-edition 4-DVD box set featuring the collectible Tom Servo figurine on December 1, 2009.
The side-splitting collection of the infamous MST3K features the show’s never-before-released film episodes The Corpse Vanishes, Warrior Of The Lost World, Santa Claus and Night Of The Blood Beast, along with a new interview with Warrior Of The Lost World director David Worth, Santa Claus Conquers The Devil: A 50-Year Retrospective, Night Of The Blood Beast (Turkey Day Version), Turkey Day ’95 intros, original theatrical trailers, and 4 exclusive MST3K mini-posters by artist Steve Vance. This Limited-Edition 4-DVD box set includes a figurine of Tom Servo, the perfect companion to the Crow T. Robot figurine included in last year’s now out-of-print Mystery Science Theater 3000: 20th Anniversary 4-DVD box set.
So join Joel, Mike, Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot as they supply their own playful brand of commentaries on some of cinema’s most misunderstood “masterpieces” in Shout! Factory’s Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XVI. This Limited-Edition 4-DVD box set will be available for a suggested retail price of $64.99.
MST3K: THE CORPSE VANISHES
Bela Lugosi stars as a sinister scientist who kills virgin brides in order to extract glandular fluids that will keep his aging wife young and beautiful. Aided by an evil shrew and her miscreant sons, they set about on a reign of terror. Horror ensues!
MST3K: WARRIOR OF THE LOST WORLD
Take Knight Rider, then plop him on a motorcycle in a post-apocalyptic world, and you’ve got The Rider, aka Warrior of the Lost World. In this brazenly derivative tale, our valiant hero must rally the forces of the Elders, the Outsiders and the Marginals to vanquish the oppressive forces of Prosser and the evil Omega state!
MST3K: SANTA CLAUS
Silent night, devilish night! Santa Claus wants to deliver presents to the children of Mexico City, but the demon Pitch wants to nothing more than stop him in his quest! How many other holiday movies have a Satan dance number and Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters?
MST3K: NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST
It’s always bad news in a sci-fi movie when an astronaut returns dead from outer space, then the base he lands at is overrun by a sinister alien. In this Roger Corman cheapie, the resurrected astronaut and alien embryos spell disaster for humanity!
The Mystery Science Theater 3000 series was created by Joel Hodgson and produced by Jim Mallon. After a year on KTMA TV in Minneapolis, its national broadcast life began in 1989 on the Comedy Channel (later to become Comedy Central), where it ran for seven seasons. The show’s final three seasons aired on the Sci-Fi Channel. The premise of the series features a hapless man who is trapped by mad scientists on a satellite in space and forced to watch old B-movies of questionable worth. To keep sane, he’s built two robot sidekicks, and together they do a running commentary on the films, affectionately mocking their flaws with inspired wisecracks and acting as a demented movie theater peanut gallery. Series creator Hodgson originally played the stranded man, Joel Robinson. When he left in 1993, series head writer Mike Nelson replaced him as the new B-movie victim Mike Nelson, and continued in the role for the rest of the show’s run. The format proved to be popular. During its eleven years and 198 episodes (including one feature film), MST3K attained a loyal fan base and critical acclaim. The series won a Peabody Award in 1993, and was nominated for writing Emmys® in 1994 and 1995.

Cool, but it would have been nice to know what the supplemental material is.

Throw in a figurine and this sells, no matter what movies are included.

Does anyone know if the DVDs will be packaged in this set like the 20th anniversary where they are in a separate sleeve to fit nicely next to the others?

I just hope that if it’s packaged similarly to the 20th Anniversary set that they’ve made it a heck of a lot easier to remove the DVD box from the tin!

Will there be a “regular edition” without the figurine similar to the 20th aniversary edition?

@ 8 RH My guess is that it will, although based upon the appearance, it won’t be in a tin like the 20th Anniversary Edition.

Really, really looking forward to this set. But, couldn’t they have released it before Thanksgiving so we could’ve watched the Turkey-Day version on said day??

#5 klisch: “Throw in a figurine and this sells, no matter what movies are included.”
Hell, throw in any four previously-unreleased episodes, and this sells, no matter what else is included.
I know that’s all I need.

How good a job is Shout! Factory doing with their box sets of MST3K? I’ll tell you how good a job they’re doing – they’re doing so good a job that I’m getting this new box set even though I already HAVE all four of these episodes!
And why? Well, they had me at “Tom Servo figure”, but it’s not just that. It’s so nice to have good-quality digital versions of these episodes AND I’m looking forward to the Special Features they’re including almost as much as the episodes themselves. Especially the Turkey Day bumps for “Night of the Blood Beast.
We are SO having an MST3K marathon this Thanksgiving. :)

Question:
Are we to assume that 701 – Night of the Blood Beast will have, not only the regular episode, but the episode with the Turkey Day segments AND the bumpers from the marathon that lead up to the episode? Will it an option to play the episode with one or the other? How do it work!?

I’m guessing, based on nothing but my guesses, that the episode proper will be the non-Turkey Day version. Then, in the special features, you will be able to play the Turkey Day sketches separately.
I would be pleasantly surprised to find that you could play the episode in a Turkey/non-Turkey version.

There’s been some indication on Shout Factory’s site that you will be able to play the Turkey Day bumpers within the movie itself. If that’s true, that will be a major achievement by SF, since Rhino probably would never have gone to such lengths.

This is going to be a great set and to have both versions of Blood Beast is just fantastic…and the Servo figure
December is slowly creeping toward us..
I pre-ordered mine immediately

It would be awesome if they let you view the episode either way, and it’s certainly within the capabilities of a DVD, but I won’t be crushed if it’s separate. I have both versions on DVD from my old tapes anyway. I only have some of the bumpers, though.

I think I’ll hang the Crow and Servo figurines on my Xmas tree, and watch them shine in the glow from the twinkle lights, while I sit back in my recliner, sipping wassail straight from the can.

“….our valiant hero must rally the forces of the Elders, the Outsiders and the Marginals to vanquish the oppressive forces of Prosser and the evil Omega state!”
It sounds so promising when you say it like that.

So excited about getting this set, which is about 2 months away.I was wondering,if they’ll have a Joel or Mike or Dr. Forrester figurine in upcoming sets??? Or will a Gypsy figurine be next?? I’m wondering what eps they’ll have for the next set? And don’t forget the footage of Joel and Trace either…

What we need are some after market Barbie and Ken sized clothing from MST.
Barbie as Pearl ( padding included ), Nuveena, Flavia etc.
Skipper as Mr. B Natural
Ken as Forrester, Frank ( yet a bit of padding included ) and Jumpsuits Jumpsuits Jumpsuits.
Now if I could just figure out how to use my sewing machine….

Perverted as this may sound a bust of Mike, Dr F , Frank or Joel would be cool, as opposed to a figurine
Id love a 8-10 inch….
Action Figure of any of them
I can see a Gypsy figurine at some point but how long will they make the neck or body ??  :!: :?:

There’s no way I wouldn’t get this set. The extras sound great. As far as extras we’d like to see…though there’s virtually no chance of this happening-lego figures made to look like the Mads, Mike, Joel, and the bots would be amazing.

“Pan Galactic Gargle Blasters?” LMAO! And the fact that “Prosser” was also the name of the guy trying to demolish Arthur Dent’s house (to make way for a bypass): coincidence? I THINK NOT! (but probably wrong anyway…)

WARNING: Be sure to check the expiration date.
Canned wassail past that date can be kind of skunky.

NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST is the best in there. I didn’t like CORPSE VANISHES.

Like almost everyone else here, I’m very excited for this to be available. However, someone brought up a good point on the MST3K Discussion Board: Why December 1st? If SF had this coming out one week earlier, November 24th, it would greatly benefit them for two reasons:
a) you could conceivably market it as both a Thanksgiving (Turkey Day bumpers & host segments) and Christmas (Santa Claus and accompanying extras) product, and
b) the release itself will fall within days of “Black Friday”, giving it a better chance to further increase sales.
I’m really suprised that Shout! didn’t take these potential benefits more into account. Jordan Fields, Brian Ward et al @ SF know how passionate the fan base of the show is. November 24th is just a week before Volume 16 comes out, and is two days before the holiday. A release date, even so close to Thanksgiving, would have had many MSTies buying this up immedeately in time to enjoy for Turkey Day. Beyond that, Volume XVI could be then used as a Yuletide gift, thanks to the inclusion of “Santa Claus”. For Shout Factory, it could be the gift that keeps on giving – at least until the holiday season is over.
What I’m trying to say is, if I had any say in when this was going to be released, I would have pushed for a mid-to-late November release.
