Weekend Discussion Thread: Your Favorite Rhino ExtraAlert reader Clint pointed us to this story about a pretty severe layoff at Rhino. It’s unclear what this means for continued distribution of Rhino’s MST3K box sets, but seemed like enough of a peg to hang this question on: What’s your favorite extra on a Rhino MST3K DVD?

Slightly off topic, but I wish every release had the scenes cut from the original movie (except maybe Sidehackers). I don’t need the whole original movie, but some of those cut scenes are hilarious on their own.
Yeah, this is kind of a “narrow” topic, but let me add my vote for Poopie on the Manos/Essentials DVD. Poopie #2 (there’s a joke in there somewhere) on Vol. 10 is fun too, but lasts only 15 minutes or so. Is that really the whole thing?
There are so many other “extras” floating around on DAP Central that have yet to see official release: This is MST, Making of, Poopie Parade of Values (the infauxmercial for Poopie), the Oscar/Summer Blockbuster Specials. Not to mention the deleted scenes from The Movie.
Interviews with cast/crew of the original films are usually good for one viewing, with “The Tormented” being my favorite. Bert and his daughter are fun and the Lou Reed guy is very enthusiastic. It wasn’t until watching this a second time that I realized he played the ghostly bartender in Kubrick’s “The Shining”.
Jack Perkins segments were always fun if a bit repetitive. The Kevin & Mike interview on V.5 is real good too. Why Rhino didn’t do more of these with other Brains seems odd.
Which I guess is the bigger issue here: Rhino were inconsistent in providing extras for their sets. Almost half of them have none. Overall I liked the whacky photo-collaged artwork much better than the cartoony, already boring Shout Factory sets.
It is sad that workers at Rhino are being laid-off. For years they were the go-to label for reissues and archival presentation. Fifteen to twenty years ago, they would have been one of the few record labels I’d love to work for. Now as someone who mainly downloads music and rents movies, I guess I am part of the problem.
Actually I hope that SF can get to bundle the MST single DVDs into sets, as I never bought any of them.
Hands down, Assignment: Venezuela. It is an outstanding short, a VERY worthy entry in the MST3K library, and it would’ve been a darn shame had it never seen the light of day.

The original VHS from BBI ran about half an hour. It wasn’t as funny as the first one– as you might imagine, considering it had only about a quarter as many episodes to draw from –so that may be why Rhino trimmed it.

Definitely the outtakes in volume 3 for me. I hope they unearth more for future Shout Factory! discs.
Having the unriffed movies available on Volume 1 is a biggie for me (and yes, I’ve watched all FOUR unriffed thanks to Rhino!). Someone asked either Brian Ward or Jordan Fields about adding the unriffed versions to SF! sets, and they said they probably wouldn’t do that because that meant having to license them twice, therefore driving up costs. If this was the case, then Rhino probably paid a pretty penny to pull this off. (Although I’ll admit that if more than one of the films was considered PD, then it may not have been as costly as I’m estimating).
Honorable mention to the extra three shorts on Volume 7, including Assignment: Venezuela. Before I purchased it, A:V was something I’d only heard about through the internet but had not seen in any format. Definitely worth the wait!
The only Rhino extra that sticks out in my mind is the intro to “The Sinister Urge” with Conrad Brooks. He’s just such a goofy, old-timey, no-namey actor that it put me in a great mood to watch the movie get riffed apart.
I have to go with the Un-Msted versions of the movies. While I don’t see myself watching “The Creeping Terror” too often without the riffing, it’s nice to know that I can.
I’m hate to hear about Rhino having hard times though. I’ve been a loyal Rhino buyer even before MST3K was brought on board. They game me my Elvira Mistress of the Dark fix back in the VHS days, and I’m a proud owner of Rhino’s first record release ever “Wildmania” by Wild Man Fischer.

On the original note about what’s been happening to Rhino, when I first read that they were looking into going digital, I was excited; perhaps they’d put eps of MST3K still in their possession onto iTunes or some other downloadable format, like what Shout! has done. But it became clearer reading on that it was only referencing music.
i like the goof-ups… like when they release a movie and they have to re-release the volume with Giant Gila Monster— my fav ‘extra’!
but of the true ‘extras’… poopie!
