If you’re attending the Comic Book and Sci-Fi Convention at the Shrine Auditorium in L.A. this weekend, be sure to meet the three stars of the original “Hobgoblins” – Tom Bartlett (Kevin), Kelley Palmer (Daphne) and Steven Boggs (Kyle) – this Sunday, Sept. 13th, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
No Nick? Dawwwww…
I wonder what happened to Paige Sullivan.
why would anyone want to meet those guys?
The characters in Hobgoblins had names? Seriously, I’ve remembered the characters’ names from watching the movie. If they weren’t printed above in this article here I couldn’t have named one of them. Hobgoblins is one of those movies where you forget 90% or better of what you’ve seen five minutes after watching it, which is the best thing I can say about the movie.
Edit for above: “I’ve never remembered the characters’ names from watching the movie.” Why is it when editing quickly the most important word gets left out? It must be the Hobgoblin effect.
Writerproducerdirectoreditor Rick Sloane will be there, too.
It’s interesting to note that Rick has been saying he hopes to make a Hobgoblins 3 bringing back most of the original cast. If that happens, I’d say these guys are a lock. Nick’s actor returned for the recent DVD extras so he seems likely, too.
Dare I dream that I can make it to LA in time to meet Steven Boggs??? Oh, sweet dream, thy name is Boggs.
Isn’t it funny how most movies, it’s the minor characters who show up for conventions while the main ones are no-shows (ie “Meet the Guy Who Played Klingon #8 in Star Trek 3!”) I think, in the case of Hobgoblins, the only actor to go on to do anything bigger was Club Scum MC Daran Norris, aka Veronica Mars’ attorney & voice actor (Fairly Oddparents, J.Jonah Jameson) and my guess is he wouldn’t be seen anywhere promoting this thing.
If I bring my rake could I challange someone to a sweet rake fight?
Bwahahaha I love (Well, hate) Thhat movie!!!
Wait! These people were “stars?”
Zap Rowsdower: Amen to that.
I like mst3k for the riffing, which is the end result of great comedy writing and delivery.
Hobgoblins as a movie was so bad that even the riffing doesn’t make me want to watch it again, let alone meet anybody in it.
Everything about it sucked; the era, the music, the actors, the script, the genre, etc.
All it had going for it was that it sucked in more ways than most of the other movies that Best Brains ever riffed on.
I loved the riffing so much I’ve seen it Three times!
Steven BOGGS this whole movie down.
False Moustache: I was kinda surprised, but Darran Norris actually did show up on the Hobgoblins DVD extras and seemed to have enjoyed the experience of being in the movie. That said, he doesn’t seem likely to show up at a Hobgoblins autograph booth, either.
Another minor actor from the movie who went on to bigger things is Duane Whitaker–who DOES want to distance himself as much from it as possible.
I know I’m clearly in the minority on this one, but I hate “Hobgoblins” and think it’s the most overrated MST3K episode. It violates Mike’s credo that the movie being riffed has to be bad, but had to have some intention of quality by the filmmakers. Joel’s recent Onion AV interview sums it up:
So that’s why personally I always go for movies that are being really earnest, because they’re really trying to create an illusion that’s very serious. Especially a monster movie. It works.
Lots of times, movies that are low-budget want to have it both ways, where they want to be making this movie, but they also want to wink at the camera. Like, “We know we’re in a bad movie.” But they’re kind of doing what we do. They’re presenting the movie, but they’re also being very meta about it and going, “Oh, we know we’re in a bad movie,” or, “We’re acknowledging it.” So that’s another thing that’s hard to do. You want to feel more like you’re observing something and then remarking on it, but if they’re turning to the camera, it takes you out of it.
Even though they’re not really “stars”,I would still like to meet them, just to ask the question,”Was there ever a time while making the movie you were thinking,”This really sucks” or were you happy to be in a movie at all??? I would like to shake their hand and let them know how much I enjoyed(might be stretching it a bit)the movie..I would do the same thing if I had the chance to meet the cast of Manos or Space Mutiny.
Re 8 & 15: Yeah, Duane Whitaker! I always forget that one of the actors from “Hobgoblins” went on to work with Quentin Tarantino!
I missed it, but oh well. Kari French wasn’t gonna be there anyway. You know, Pixie at the club? She seemed really sweet.

Disregard #19. My computer acted up before I could correct the message.
#8:
No offense, but you must have some pretty bad conventions wherever you are.
As for the Hobgoblins cast, it was pretty clear from the recent “Hobgoblins 2” videos that they realized it was a bad movie, even if Sloane was a little less clear on that point. Whether or not this fact violates core MST3K riffing principles, it at least means that I can feel some sympathy for them as human beings. Quite a few of the stars and auteurs of the MST3K canon seem to lack even the smallest degree of self-awareness, which is probably funnier, but which deadens any charitable impulses I might have toward them.
I just wish Sniffles or Bounce-Bounce had been there.
