Joel Interview

Cinematic Titanic’s stint at the Lakeshore Theater in Chicago is this weekend, and so naturally David Wolinsky of The Onion/AV Club/Decider wanders through a video store with Joel discussing bad movies.

Yes, Joel, we all know your political leanings. I do disagree with the undisputed tag CT gets.

He ALMOST came out of the closet in this one. Come on, Joel… you can do it! Stand up and be proud! Sure, a lot of fangirls will be crushed, but a little dose of reality will be good for them anyway.

I’m pretty sure his wife and kids would be more crushed. ;)

Oh for the lulz. That was amusing. Can’t way to see the CT crew this weekend~

I have seen Another Gay Sequel and I can testify that it is truly, truly execrable. Borderline-Hobgoblins kinda execrable.

Hi. Always glad if anyone thinks I’m funny. So thank you!

And mostly I don’t weigh in re politics, but… I don’t think anyone would call me a conservative, as currently defined.

    I’ll butt out now. Cheers.

VERY funny. But they’re not all that conservative. Right of center certainly, but not hard right. Um… This is all veering dangerously close to one of the hot-topics-not-to-be-discussed in a friendly mixed-company kind’a contextuality facilitizations and whatnot.

D’oh! I hate it when somebody slips their post in while I’m a’composin’ mine, even if they ARE the incredibly HILARIOUS Bill Corbett whom I’ve adored since he first arrived on MST. (did I kiss enough butt yet?)

I only referred to James Lilacs blogs speaking on a similar subject that Joel mentioned . Mike himself said he was center right on the Hugh Hewitt show. Mike had everyone in tears and made many new fans of the program that day.I’m sure Joel thinks Mike is funny.

This is an example of why I don’t care for the “conservative/liberal” labels, especially as applied to comedians. It’s too broad. If you’re 1% right of center on one particular issue, and 1% left on another, which are you? Are you a social conservative/fiscal liberal? What idiot put forth the idea that the political landscape is one-dimensional anyway?

If we must be one-dimensional, I think a much better rating would be “funny/not funny”*.

    * Especially for politicians :twisted:

“The thing that’s so peculiar about movie riffing is people are kind of spending the hour and a half with you, and you’re kind of their companion. And they don’t like assholes. So you have to avoid being an asshole.”

A very interesting quote, since I’ve seen many people say they were turned off by the latter period MST3K because it was too mean spirited in comparison to gentle Joel.

I don’t think ANYONE would want to be labeled ‘conservative’ as currently defined.

That said, this was a great interview, I thought.

Bill is 19th Century conservative. He churns his own butter.

He probably posted because they were about to tear up his writer’s guild card.

Nice interview. Very different from the usual. I particularly like his humbleness about other riffing groups, as I’m sure he was not just referring to Rifftrax, but also other iRiffer groups like Riff Raff Theater, Quiptracks, Cinester Theater, etc. since some of them have done movies that MST3K would not have tried. (Cinester Theater’s riff of Back to the Future iRiff is hilarious, and BTTF is not only a comedy, but a good one to boot)
Joel, Quiptracks is going to come out with a riff of HULK (2003) in a few months (it’s been really slow writing), I’d be really interested to know what you thought.
Also, IMHO, the new Incredible Hulk gets it just right. Its a lot of fun, plenty of action, good effects, some good characters, and one great character in Blonsky.

    @ #19 Ryan

I liked the new Hulk reboot, too. That 2003 film, though, was quite abysmal.

I Love Joel and will watch CT any day, but the Spiderman 3 Rifftrax with Mike and James Lileks was one of my favorites. The difference, to me at least, is that these two knew how to be funny without resorting to cheap-shot political humor. (unlike the Palin/Bush/Guantanamo memes that pop up in CT like a bad Fark thread)

I love MST and RT because it is so apolitical and universal. Ted Kennedy joke too much? Don’t worry, there was a Bob Packwood joke coming soon. In today’s climate, staying away from political humor makes your work harder — but the rewards are usually a little larger.

Really dug the interview. So sick of the same damned HOW DO YOU DO IT? questions being asked.

I would say the amount of political humor, left or right, in any of the various projects is so small as to not even matter. Are people really getting their feelings hurt over a Mitt Romney joke? Honestly, people.
