Bill’s solo panel was interesting. He read about 30 minutes of his one man play “Heckler” which he had written after MST3K had been canceled, but before he re-teamed up with Mike and Kevin. It is basically the diary, read as a monologue, of a person who believes it is his calling to heckle. The portion that he read was pretty good. The experience was also slightly heightened if you closed you eyes and imagined a certain golden robot reading the part.
Bill was also exited in having been at the Terry Gilliam panel earlier that day. He had snuck in just as I was going through the door and was dutifully directed to some seats up from. I think he was looking forward to being able to sign autographs with him later and seemed very inspired by Gilliam’s ability to keep projects afloat in the world of film while having to sail the sometimes unforgiving waters of Hollywood studios.
The remainder of the panel was Q&A. Mostly focusing on his rifftrax work. Hardest film to riff for him was Memento. He’s really trying hard to convince them to do a trax for Billy Jack (the Kung-fu native American). He seemed slightly depressed that trax doesn’t allow for skits to break up the riffing, especially for the epicly long films.
One anecdote from his time as Crow (the rest stored away for Sunday’s panel) was that he only had one weekend to play with Crow after he was informed that his audition was a success. His first taping followed the week after.
All in all, the panel was pretty fun, slightly different with the one man play reading, but a good way to spend an hour.

I am at DragonCon. Frank stated that the CT are working on new DVD releases for the fall.

At the cinematic panel, they said that new dvds out before Christmas of this year.

Is “CON” really the best choice of words in a title of something being sold to people?
The word invokes mental images of being suckered out of my money for something stupid.

Manny: Having attended four conventions and soon a fifth, I assure you that the first thing “con” says to me is, in fact, “convention”. :D

If waiting in line to pay a C-list washed-up celebrity $20 for an autographed photo isn’t a “con,” I dunno what is. That said, I wish I were there. Dragon Con always assembles an impressive collection of solid B-listers that I’d gladly be conned by.

Continuing from what Sharktopus said, it’s also much smaller and friendlier than ComicCon. At least it was the last time I was there (2004), but I assume it’s still the case.

Just got home and had to say the “Crow vs. Crow” lecture/show was fantastic! It started late since they are filming it for a future Shout Factory release and they had to get everything just right, but once it cranked it was awesome. Both men had great memories of the show, though Bill seemed to defer to Trace on most of the questions and comments. Trace gave us some great insights into the “origin” of Crow and even what the name stands for. We’re still in the dark as to exactly what Crow’s middle name is, however.
Frank Conniff made a guest appearance on the front row and even got to answer a question about movies they wished they’d gotten to riff.
The best question offered by the audience was a person who asked about the possibility of seeing Trace and Bill riff a movie together either at Rifftrax or CT (Rifftrax seems the more likely bet). Both men were open to the idea, so I say get to the Rifftrax website and send in those requests! I just hope they would do an older movie so we could buy it on DVD someday rather than the audio-only download version–but I’ll take what I can get.
They did have a Crow puppet there that Trace had made (along with what was supposed to be an Ebay rip-off version someone else had brought). Unfortunately, neither man used the puppet to give us any classic lines. Still, it was a great panel and you definitely don’t want to miss it when it comes out on the future DVD release.

“He seemed slightly depressed that trax doesn’t allow for skits to break up the riffing, especially for the epicly long films.”
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. “Host segements” (be they ‘Lunch Breaks’, ‘Stop the movie’ moments or whatever) help make it more of a production and not just guys talking over a movie. Nice to see the desire for them is there, even if the format doesn’t allow for it.

Can’t wait for that Shout Factory extra (Crow vs Crow) !! Glad they were there to film it !!

I think all MSTies should know by now that Crow’s middle is “The”. Unless he changed it to “Tyranosaurus”.

I’m sure if he was gonna change it he’d change it to Tiberius!

At the Crow vs. Crow panel, Trace pulled apart the spare Crow he had. There were many horrified gasps from the audience.
Also, while waiting for Bill’s first panel, Mary Jo wandered by the line a few times. It was kind of surreal. I’m sure that no where else in the con would anyone have recognized her, but she had to show up to the one place where everyone knew who she was.

Also, forgot to mention:
Bill said that the next Rifftrax they were going to be doing would be DragonWars, apparently some Korean movie that the people at Comic Con picked for them to do.

#15, Fnord, that is AWESOME! Dragon Wars is so perfecto for them! I do love this movie as it is so much fun when the Dragons are on screen (which is often), but when they are not, it is Red Zone Cuba level bad.

I went to bill thing and Crow vs crow which was great but I also went to Gonzo stuff. I went to the Gonzo film fest and Quiz show. The film flest had lost short film and stuf and got see mst3k crew get pictures and stuff pluss other guest. The funniest thing Trace trying and failing to fire a nerf gun into crowd (for prizes) and everyone doing invasions body snatchers (the point &scream thing) to Trace and Frank becase the were next people walk through the door. (we weird them out)
At Gonzo Quiz show there was Bill, Trace, and Adam savage from Mythbuster all togther. Which was very fun and cool. I also learned Trace’s picture is in a enclopicia (I can’t remeber what year) standing infront of Paul Bunna and Blue ox for scale.

During Bill Corbett Live, Bill says, “My wife has actually told me, ‘Honey, stop riffing breakfast'”.
Mary Jo looked beautiful and came to see Bill at his signing Friday. At one point she and her husband enjoyed a meal with one of the Monty Pythons.
Frank had to leave for the airport Sunday around 3 p.m. but was cracking funny as we talked, just before he left the hotel.
Trace was a trooper and participated in the Gonzo Panel Show Sunday afternoon after doing the Nuts on the Road, Gonzo Sound and Vision on the late night schedule Saturday.
All four, Frank, Trace, Mary Jo and Bill met and talked to fans at the latter-mentioned Gonzo affair, and let us take pictures with them.

@Fnord,
I’m sure I completely misunderstood the timbre of your post regarding our experience in Atlanta. If so, my apologies.
Your post regarding us attending Bill’s signing seemed to make it seem as if Mary Jo was purposefully trying to be recognized at the CON. I live with this girl, and can assure you she has absolutely no desires in that direction. We were there strictly because we LOVE Bill! We’re good friends, and just waiting for the panel to open.

Oh I forgot at the Gonzo quiz show Neil Innes (from monty Python) talked about knitting and hyponized Bill and eveyone.

I did the CT panel Friday night, which was a lot of fun, and the Crow vs. Crow panel, which was even moreso. I’m tempted to mention some stuff that happened at the CvC panel, but since Shout Factory taped it all, I don’t want to issue spoilers. :)

Sorry if it came off that way, I meant nothing of the sort. I was just remarking that she came across the one place in all of Atlanta where she would be possibly the most recognized at that one moment, not that she meant to, or didn’t mean to.
Merry Jo’s motivations are far beyond what someone like me could interpret. I was just thrilled to see her there unexpectedly. Much more of a thrill than coming across Shatner.

I saw the CT presentation of Blood of the Vampires Friday night. I wish they could have done a live riffing, but I guess it wasn’t to be. At least laughing along with a crowd always improves a riffed film! I asked the first question of the Q&A – when the microphone started giving a lot of feedback. Anyway, it was why two of the CTers get to sit down during the film. ;-) Frank and Mary Jo said they didn’t ask any questions about it, since they were happy to be able to sit.
I sadly missed Crow Vs. Crow, which I wouldn’t have missed for anything… except Patrick Stewart. Curse the scheduling gods!
