I love CT as much as the next Mistie, but damn release some DVD’s already…. I can’t make live shows with 2 weeks warning and I can’t spend $300 worth of plane tickets to get to Dallas on short notice for a one-shot live show.

I don’t even check their website daily anymore. I know I’ll get news about the off-chance a new dvd comes out here.

I’m a sad panda when I think of CT now.

Cool. I’d been curious to find out what these guys were up to, now my cheapness can be satisfied while still supporting them!

Do you folks have any recommendations? Which is your favorite?

  3. Super Agent Icky Elf says:

PD–If your only going to pick one or two, #1: Legacy of Blood and #2: Doomsday Machine. All of the DVDs are very good, but those two, IMHO, are the best.

And Zombie– I feel your pain, brotha!!

  4. Graboidz says:

PD – My favorite is still “Doomsday Machine”, their second release. For me that one comes closest to capturing Joel era MST3K.

I’m with “zombie” on this one, when was the last CT release…March? Almost half a year later and no release since then? Live shows are fine, but not a good substitute for monthly or even quarterly DVD releases when hoping to build a fan base.

PD- I agree with the two previous posters, except that I’d rate Doomsday Machine #1. I’d probably rate Frankenstein’s Castle of Freaks next if you are looking to buy three.

  6. This sale will finally allow me to get the last two (I’ve been a bit strapped for cash, but this is too good to pass up).

Of the ones I’ve seen, I recommend “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians”. I just think they did a great job revisiting this one. I also really like “The Wasp Woman”. In both of these instances, while the films are “cheesy” and bad in a particular way, they are watchable, unlike “Doomsday Machine”, which I don’t think I could stand on its own. “Legacy of Blood” is solid, but disturbing enough to drop it down on my list.

Anyway, glad there’s a sale so I can catch up before new DVDs start rolling. (It wouldn’t do to get too far behind.) And if they’re still available by the time I place my order, a T-Shirt will be nice, too!

Nice! Now I can (hopefully) get the last CT dvd I need, “Wasp Woman”.

Out of all the DVDs, I would have to say “Frankenstein’s Castle of Freaks” is my favorite. Lots of great riffing, and the movie is bizarre enough to hold viewer interest.

I got the email from CT about this sale just after 1 AM today. The sale is a little late for those of us who bought all this stuff as soon as it was released, but I sent the news to friends who might be interested.

I have to agree with those begging for more DVD releases. I’ve been quite lucky and seen CT live three times now, but being able to get new DVDs to enjoy at home on a regular basis was something I was really enjoying and it’s suddenly dried up for the time being. CT has some good momentum going for an entirely artist-run project and I hope they don’t take too long of a break and lose it.

  9. Mr. B(ob) says:

Regarding favorite episodes, there are no bad ones, but the later ones show more polish in the CT production itself, like Blood Of The Vampires, which is excellent as the movie is really goofy and CT are really up to speed at that point.

On the other hand, I have a fondness for cheap SF, so Doomsday Machine and Wasp Woman are also favorites for me.

The film used for Oozing Skull has every horror cliche ever done thrown into the one film, including both a malevolent dwarf and a hulking stupid giant for lab assistants! It features not one but two brain transplants, so there’s plenty of material to make fun of there.

I’m hoping that CT has gotten wind on how well the Rifftrax live event went. Maybe they’ll try it out for themselves. PLEASE? :???:

I love CT but these one-shot live shows have made them loose a lot of momentum. I’m interested in seeing what they’ll do once they come back from their break.

Seems as good a place as any to vent. I can’t believe the plan of action right now is to have a sale on what little they have released instead of giving us something, ANYTHING new.

I used to be a daily visitor to the site. Now I wait for an email because there is nothing happening there. Even Mallon’s site gives you a reason to swing by every day, even if it is for just a 15 second video clip. Since the last DVD I think the most action I’ve seen there is, what 3 blogs?

We were a Joel family. I’ve always favored the early years the most (nothing against anyone, I like it all but have preferences) and am really glad to have the chance to see them all again. But RT has officially moved to the #1 position in my book for 2nd gen MST3k. Not everything they do is gold, but I NEVER feel like they’re just “letting it ride.” Lots of blogs and contests and new material and the price is pretty reasonable.

NEVER thought I’d have to say this, but CT, you’d better step up your game.

Hopefully this is just a way of clearing out left over stock for new inventory coming up.

Although it does at first glance bring to mind a “Going Out of Business” sale.

To me, there is no bad CT, Rifftrax, MST…I love them all. I hope CT doesn’t rest to long!

  18. GersonK says:

@MSTjon – Actually a sale is a good idea now that they’ve figured out that they can take a break and want to take one. Not everybody who’s ever going to buy these episodes already has. A sale keeps interest during the break and might get a handful of the many mst3k fans who haven’t purchased a CT or a RT through the door. For those of us who have a few holes in our collection, it’s maybe a nicer reward than a blog entry on bacon or Frank’s favorite movies or a contest that ends in a free iPod for one fan. Yeah, it’s not a great reward for the people who’ve bought all 7.

If they don’t release a new episode tomorrow, people will not forget about them or fail to return anymore than they did between mst3k and the current revival.

They do not have to beat RT to survive. At the start, Joel seemed to be convinced he could make it go with a fraction of the sales mst3k is getting on DVD, and I haven’t heard him change that song.

In other news, the RiffTrax crowd was on the Dennis Miller radio show today.

They left Dennis with an open invitation to participate and Dennis said he’d be like a pig in slop.

I hope CT’s fan base doesn’t jump ship too quick. The sale of the backlog dvds is just an opportunity to get all the new fans they got during the live shows caught up on the films. Please remember the live shows have two key features. A)It generates income – that’s super important for CT to last. B) It introduces people to what CT is all about who may have never seen MST3K before [yes they exist] – that too generates future income when future dvds are released. The money has to be there for CT to keep going. As for the dvds being lower priced than when first released. I will not complain. I concider myself a “core” fan. If that means I have to pay a little more to insure the success of CT then so be it. They will no doubt do other films for the live shows and when those dvds of the older shows get released I’ll be getting the “best” jokes for the entire lenth of the film. Do I want to see Alien Factor? Hell yes!! Will I wait? Yes!
Have faith…be patient, good things will come. In the mean time complete your CT collection at 25% off. [

I’m excited to get caught up on CT offerings I’ve missed until now. I’m sort of not really understanding why anybody want’s to make threats at CT that they “better step it up” (or WHAT???), just because they’re ridiculously impatient. Take your time CT, get a good rest, and come back with killer stuff. Those impatient guys can go twitter themselves or flip channels or something…

  26. MSTJon says:

It wasn’t meant as a threat, really! I’m just saying that in a less-than-ideal economy, RT keeps dipping into my wallet with new products and keeps my attention with new material. So while it’s true no camp has to beat the other, right now they’re competing for my money and it’s a total runaway. I like the CT crew, but I can’t justify giving them money for nothing. RT knows a new short means a new dollar from me. I already own the CT library so this sale means they recieve no more money from me right now. Sure it may help some plug in the holes, but I have a hard time believing it attracts newbies. After all, the outreach program seems to be the occasional live show.

I’m not abandoning ship or anything (but being reminded of the Titanic with every reference doesn’t increase confidence) and I really hope they do this a long, long time. I’m just noticing that, despite all expectations, RT has become my preferred group. When I see something from CT, I’ll be right there in line to buy it. Maybe it’s the idea of one release a year makes it a special event, but shouldn’t there be something in between just to remind us they’re there or generate interest? Shout! is producing more than them at this point.

Am I impatient? Maybe I am, but from a business standpoint, I truly don’t understand this. If I make burgers, I can sell a burger to the same person every day. Once I’ve bought a DVD, I (in all probability) won’t buy it again. I’m frustrated that while RT just had the big Plan 9 event and now has commercial releases out, I’ve heard almost nothing from CT. Even a promise of something to come would generate more interest than this.

Not trying to start a fight or anything. Just frustrated that the biggest news we’ve got in half a year is a sale on the same old stuff. Nothing personal against any posters, RT or CT.

I concure with MSTJon. There aren’t very many bigger fans of MST/CT/Film Crew/Riff Trax than myself; I started watching MST in their first season and I’ve purchased every DVD they’ve released. I too, vented a bit both here and on the CT forum when they announced their summer break, I was supremely disappointed. I don’t feel there is anything wrong with expressing dissatisfaction with the situation. I’m not angry or hatefu; not vowing to never support them again, I love them all and look forward to more DVDs in the future. As fan and a financial supporter, of them or anyone else, I have the right to constructively criticize and I do, with all due respect.

MSTJon, and others, have raised a valid point. It’s not necessarily about a competition between Rifftrax and CT, it’s about peoples limited disposable income and keeping “the brand” viable. I completely understand CT taking a break, however they haven’t released a DVD since March and the blogs have been few and far between. Perhaps, they should have released a DVD and then taken their break. I know they have three riffed movies that they’re using as live shows, but if they released one of them on dvd, it still leaves two to do live.

The only reason any of us complain, is because we care so much. I want CT to do well and continue.

Ya know, maybe it’s not as simple as “just make more new episodes”. These things cost money, especially with their visual element, and they don’t have a corporation behind them like Rifftrax. All these little tantrums are presumptuous at best. This is just my speculation of course, but if it is a budgetary issue, I hope this sale brings them some cash to keep working, and if it is a rest thing, more power to them. It’s their business, let them worry about it. I have no doubt the whiners will be back when they are. I know I’m down with CT for life.

MSTJon, Super Agent Icky Elf – I see your point(s). While the sale is motivation for me to finish collecting dvds I’ve missed, and for people who haven’t tried CT to give it a go, I guess I can understand the frustration, too. It does make good sense to keep new stuff coming, and maybe if enough attention is drawn by the sale (although it’s REALLY pretty short!) it would make for a good lead-in for new product. Wishful thinking, I suppose. My biggest concern is that I would hate to see quality suffer. I love Rifftrax, but have been dissapointed with some of their stuff, and I can’t help but wonder if it’s maybe that they were hurrying to make new product available that the humor suffered.

  34. “I like the CT crew, but I can’t justify giving them money for nothing.”

    Who’s asking you to?

“I already own the CT library so this sale means they recieve no more money from me right now.”

Did them *not* having a sale mean otherwise? I guess I can’t see how this sale thing is bad for you.

“Sure it may help some plug in the holes, but I have a hard time believing it attracts newbies.”
“I’m getting a late start here, but money loosened up enough, so I finally was able to order my first 2 CT’S. I got ‘Legacy of Blood’ & ‘The Oozing Skull’. I’m looking forward to finally seeing CT!”

    End of that argument.

“Even a promise of something to come would generate more interest than this.”
“To be clear: Cinematic Titanic does intend to put out more DVDs in the future – we’re just not recording any this summer.”

    And that one.

The thing is, your arguments are solid, if this were a normal business. If a video game company doesn’t put out titles for several months, they lose brainshare. If the restaurant you often go to closes for half a year, you may get out of the habit and go somewhere else.

But those guys are in business to make money. That’s not what CT is about. (You should know this. After all, if Joel was the kind of guy who’d start up a company soley for the purposes of making money, he’d be the kind of guy who wouldn’t have left the show in the first place.)

Joel and the “Titans” do this for their own enjoyment. If they can make enough money to keep doing it, that’s great. If they want a break, that’s their business. The fact is, I have no problem if they never do another CT release again. They’ve already given me seven more releases than I could have imagined just three years ago.

This isn’t a bold business plan intended to grab market share. If it was, they’d get corporate backing, even if only from a smallish operation like Legend Films or Shout Factory. But then they *would* have to worry about schedules and deadlines and “meeting market expectations”. And I don’t think they want that.

Guys, if you are reading this, don’t worry. Work at your own pace. Plenty of us will be here when you’re ready without a word of reproach for the break.

  35. Cliff Weismeyer says:

Maybe this is my Gen-X skepticism of romantic notions about the arts coming through, but I’m not sure that I buy that the CT crew are not in it to make money. If memory serves, I believe that Joel cited as one of the reasons for starting CT was his amazement that his checks from sales of MST3K DVD’s were on the rise, and his recognition that there was still a substantial demand for movie riffing media. Joel and the crew get to do something that they love and are peerless at, and get to make money doing it. That’s the dream, isn’t it? I don’t see how having a profit motive denigrates CT in any way. As far as I know, none of the CT owners/performers are so independently wealthy as to not have to work. They need to make a living some how, and the more money they can make from CT and the bigger market they can grab, the less time they have to spend on other projects and the more time they can spend working on CT. It’s a beautiful thing.

The biggest winners so far have been us. As the previous poster noted, we have had 7 CT releases that we would not have had, and we’ve probably had the Rifftrax Plan 9 event that we might have never had if CT hadn’t demonstrated that there is a national market for live riffing. I think that the friendly competition between CT and RT has been good for both, kind of like how the competition between the Beatles and Beach Boys and then the Rolling Stones caused those groups to raise their games, and am anxious to see what CT does next.

  36. The Toblerone Effect says:

I do have faith that CT will return to making DVDs at a steadier clip; they may just be enjoying the fan reaction at live shows and desire to continue doing them. I have no problem with that, and should they be able to produce a DVD release before Christmas, I will certainly forgive the long lay-off.
