RIP Earl Holliman

STUDIO CITY, CALIF. — Earl Holliman, the actor best known for playing Angie Dickinson’s boss on the 1970s NBC cop drama Police Woman, died at his home here Nov. 25. He was 96.

Holliman won a best supporting actor Golden Globe for playing Katharine Hepburn’s kid brother in “The Rainmaker.”

MSTies will remember Joel and the bots’ tribute to him in episode 418- ATTACK OF THE THE EYE CREATURES, which included the observation that Holliman “would have been William Shatner, had there not already been one.”

The Hollywood Reporter has the story.

Thanks to Tim for the heads up.

“Hearing about the passing of Earl Holliman, I watched the @MST3K sketch we did about him and I cringe at how dismissive it was of his career. He had a GREAT career with excellent work in many TV shows and movies. Rest In Peace.”

He also had a good supporting roles in “Forbidden Planet” and “The Power”, as well as the lead in “Where is Everybody?”, the “Twilight Zone” pilot. That’s what I call sci-fi cred.

RIP, Earl Holliman. You had a wonderful career, sir. One of the best things about being a MSTie is interacting with so many people who know something about the ins and outs of Hollywood.

That said, the sketch from 418 is one of my least favorite host segments. When Joel geeks out on pop culture for three minutes, it’s time to hit the mute button or fast forward, depending on what format you’re watching.
