Pawling N.Y. — James Earl Jones, whose acting career was every bit as rich and resonant as the iconic bass voice that gave sinister malevolence to Darth Vader in the “Star Wars” films, died Sept 9 at his home here. He was 93.
A native of Arkabutla, Mississippi, Jones was raised by his grandparents in Michigan and overcame a stutter in early childhood. After studying drama at the University of Michigan, he moved to New York in 1957 to follow in the footsteps of his father as an actor.
MSTies will remember his role as Albert in the movie in episode 403- CITY LIMITS. He was also mentioned in a host segment in episode 805- THE THING THAT COULDN’T DIE.
Obviously the man is first and foremost Darth Vader. But I’d like to go a little deeper. I can’t read a Tom Clancy novel without hearing his voice as Admiral Greer.
RIP
He was great in everything I’ve seen (or heard) him in.
Yes, “City Limits” was a lower grade, low budget, post-Apocalypse flick that made for good MSTing material. But Jones did well in his role. That’s the sign of a good actor.
I watched Blood Tide two weeks ago, which was so bad that I actually feel guilty about it being the last thing I saw him in before his passing. Satellite News is the only site where confessing this makes any sense.
Has that one ever been professionally riffed?
Of course, his performance was the only thing barely holding that Mediterranean mess together. RIP, in a field of our dreams, far, far away.
Playing his part in the Circle of Life.
RIP to a true legend. Just as long as his force ghost isn’t replaced with Hayden Christensen.
he did a great audio narration to the KJV of the Bible….
Also mentioned in a riff in “Invasion of the Neptune Men” no doubt among others (no idea why I happened to remember that particular one).
