In the wake of the recent Shout Factory release of Vol. XV and announcement of contents for XVI, I want to know what people consider their favorite of the numerous DVD box sets.
Talking points could include:
• artwork/packaging
• bonus features (trailers, outtakes, interviews)
• episode choices (Joel/Mike ratios, favorites/non-favorites, thematic connections)
• Rhino vs. Shout FactoryThis topic could go in a few directions. Some people may choose to rank all the sets in order of preference and others may chose a single set as their “desert-island dvd”. Also, suggestions for which set a budding MSTie might purchase first.
Well, I’m afraid I’m biased. I have to pick the 20th Anniversary Set from Shout Factory because, well, I’m on it. :-)
What’s your pick?
love ’em all, except of course for #9—WHICH I FORGOT TO ORDER!!…the story of my life!

I’d have to give a slight edge to 2 over 4, but there is no wrong answer there.
For those of you who missed out on Volume 9 and Godzilla vs. Megalon, you can rent those discs from Netflix…

I like any episode that comes out on DVD!
But, then, what will happen when DVDs become obsolete and we’re all scrounging around junkyards to play our favorite episodes?
Or will we have to fork over more $$$ to get the same episodes on a new format?

By the way…and word on when we can pre-order volume 16?
I’m ready to sink a little further into debt but will do so happily clutching my Tom Servo figure….

For my favorite set, I’d have to go with the original set. Although, I’ve always preferred the Joel episodes compared to the Mike ones, but the ones on this set are my all-time favorites, especially “The Creeping Terror,” one of my favorite Z-Movies, and “The Skydivers,” because I like Francis Coleman, even though I refer to him as the second worst director of all-time (the worst is Harold Warren, director of “MANOS: The Hands of Fate”). However, if Shout! Factory ever released a DVD of the entire first CC season, I’m almost positive that it would be my favorite.

I’m sorry. That’s Coleman Francis. I always get it mixed up.

….”Or will we have to fork over more $$$ to get the same episodes on a new format?”—just do what my Mom does–she has a supply of cheap VCR’s in her closet–she says at 82 she’ll be damned if she is replacing all of her movies!!

When it comes to picking a favorite box set, content is king. Does the set include episodes I enjoy? Extras and packaging are icing on the cake. Sure they increase overall enjoyment of the set, but all in all I go by the episodes themselves.
I enjoy a solid mix of Joel and Mike episodes, and enjoy both hosts for different reasons. So an ideal four disc boxset will have two Joel and two Mike. CC vs. Sci-fi? Don’t really care, but if they can work one Sci-fi episode on a set that’s good news to me.
Here is how I break down the box sets, with five stars being the highest.
Set 2: 5
Set 4: 5
Set 7: 4
Set 5: 4
Set 10: 4
Set 12: 4
Set 3: 3
Set 13: 3
Set 14: 3
Set 6: 3
Set 1: 3
Set 15: 3
Set 8: 3
Set 9: 3
Set 11: 2
As you can see with 3 being the average, lots of boxsets have given me a solid amount of entertainment.
Set 2 has three of my favorite episodes (“Pod People”, “Cave Dwellers” and “Angel’s Revenge”) and “Shorts Vol.1”, which is my favorite shorts compilation.
Set 4 has three five star episodes on it, with “Hamlet” being four stars (Yes, I actually enjoy “Hamlet”!)
Set 7 is a bit of a freak, because I really dislike “Killer Shrews”. But that disc does contain three excellent shorts on it, and that raises the disc score quite a bit. Added to the two Herc films and “Prince of Space”, this set shot up in the scoring.
For me set 11 is pretty much a dud. “Horrors of Spider Island” is the best of the bunch (four stars in my book), but the other three are all so turgid and slow. Not much rewatch value there.
Set 13 is smack in the middle based on show content but the great extras would push this puppy up in rank, easily a four star box set. In fact all the Shout Factory releases are four stars from me, because of the extras and the comic art covers.

well for me and my very well watched collection. For indivigual movie, hobgoblins, just always laugh over that one, right behind it The MST3K movie, wish it would have had a wider release. And I can always put in a short collection to really pick me up on a bad day,now thankfully being resupplied by Rifttraxs shorts. But as for sets, yes I believe the next one is just going to rock, I have a tie between 4 and 5. Overdrawn and space mutiny are just classic and some of the best they have done, and 5 with Merlin, Boggy and the true laugh fest Time chassers probably is a little more in front. I just hope to see the rusofinish ones soon and some of the other classics, Delta knights, the magic sword, city limits, and yes the master ninja’s. I also really liked the movie intro’s by Mike on 4 and 5. But with all and said and done there is a set perfect for everyone !!!

After rambling on to decide my favorite DVD set, y’know what box set means more to me than any other? That first Rhino VHS 3-pack. 3 eps I’d never seen before: I Accuse My Parents (perhaps the best non-scifi experiment) The Atomic Brain (starring upsetting voyeurism, fake accents, brain transplants, and an exploding reactor, none of which had anything to do with each other or the title for that matter) and Red Zone Cuba, my all time favorite episode. DVD may be the format the entire series eventually gets released on, but those 3 clunky tapes that take up 12 discs worth of shelf space will always be my favorite box set.
Well, unless Shout! makes a deal with Universal and verious estates that allows them to release 2 sets of the first 2 SciFi Channel arcs: a Planet of the Apes set, then an Observer World set. I mean, that’s the closest thing to complete season box sets we could still see.

Volume 10 for me, but I love Shouts Packaging way better with the slim cases instead of that horrid 2 step process to get a DVD from the Rhino sets..very cumbersome.
From Rhino Vol. 10
From SF Volume 15 so far
Overall Volume 10 by far, then Volume 9

Sorry I took so long to answer this one. I would have to say that for me it is a two way tie between Vol. 6 and Vol. 12. The riffing is right on in all the eps, a lot of the host segments had me laughing so hard I started having trouble breathing, plus you just can’t beat the trailer for Parts: The Clonus Horror. The trailer actually scared me even more than the film itself did.

As someone said earlier, “I wish I could go against the crowd, but when your right your right”.
#5 is the best.
All the others have at least one or two great ones, but #5 has four great ones, with Touch of Satan being my favorite.
It looks like the forthcoming set is going to be a winner too. I was very impressed by The Corpse Vanished for a season one episode.

Volume 4 is the best set. I’ve bought every episode that Rhino and Shout has ever released. But I also own all the unreleased episodes from season 1 to 10 and a few KTMA episodes. I keep my collection on my DVD shelf in chronological order, I love watching them in order of release. I always replace my personal copies with the studio versions when they’re released and throw out the packaging. I’ve also cataloged the whole series, with host segment descriptions, songs and movie synopsis, etc. This is probably the only nerdy thing I’ve ever done, I have a small collection of films on DVD and the only other TV show I own on is Twin Peaks, but for some reason I’m obsessed with MST3K. I also know that they’re some episodes that will never be released and for that reason I’m very happy that I have my own DVD copies. Shout should start listing the episode numbers on the back of the sets.

I don’t know what boxed set it was, but the set that contained SkyDivers is my favorite, with the set containing Angels Revenge a close 2nd. Two of my all-time favorite episodes…I know every line, and yet I still laugh when I watch them!
