RIP Louis Gossett Jr.

SANTA MONICA, CALIF. — Louis Gossett Jr., who won a supporting actor Oscar for playing the hard-as-nails drill instructor in 1982’s “An Officer and a Gentleman” a few years after winning an Emmy for his role as the cunning Fiddler in “Roots,” died here March 29. He was 87.

MSTies will recall that he was imitated during a host segment in episode 806- THE UNDEAD, recalling Gossett’s memorable catchphrase, “mayoNAISE,” from “An Officer and a Gentleman.” He was also was mentioned in a host segment in episode 417- CRASH OF MOONS.

The Washington Post has a nice obit.

IMDB says he was the first male to be shown giving birth in a movie when he played Jeriba in “Enemy Mine”. That implies there were other males that gave birth on screen, but I don’t know anything about that. In my opinion it took a great actor to pull off the role of “Jeri” the hermaphroditic alien. Kudos to Mr. Gossett. RIP.

Well, Schwarzenggar had a caesarian in “Junior”. Did Billy Crystal give birth in “Rabbit Test”?

For me I think Gossett Jr, I think Iron Eagle. I’m of the right age to fondly remember that piece of 80’s cheese. He was good in it. Rest in Peace.
