Walter Mirisch, RIP

LOS ANGELES — Walter Mirisch, the legendary independent-minded producer and the only person to receive the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences’ Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, the Irving G. Thalberg Award and an Oscar for best picture, died here February 24. He was 101.

Mirisch, who served four terms as president of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, was producer for such notable films as Billy Wilder’s “The Apartment (1960), Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins’ musical drama “West Side Story” “Some Like It Hot” (1959), “The Great Escape” (1963), The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) and “Fiddler on the Roof” (1971).

MSTies may recall that he served as executive producer for the movie in episode 806- THE UNDEAD and the movie WORLD WITHOUT END, riffed in MST3K’s first live show.
