  1. It was only by watching MST3K’s presentation of The Sidehackers (whose real title is Five the Hard Way) that I learned of Diane McBain.

I was sorry to learn that Ms. McBain was a victim of a brutal rape assault by two men which she said said affected her long afterwards. The assailants were never caught. Hopefully, she managed to eventually find peace in her heart. RIP

I read that she eventually became a rape counselor and helped other people deal with their trauma. She turned her ordeal into a positive, which says a lot for her character. RIP

Damn, that shouldn’t happen to anyone.

  5. Real question, in no way intended to be funny or disrespectful.
    But.
Am I the ony person on the planet who can’t get Barbara Bain and Diane McBain separated in their head? Every time I crack “Sidehackers” I have to inform anyone else in the room that the female lead was married to Martin Landau.

It’s not unusual to get people with similar names mixed up. In the past, I’ve gotten Grace Slick and Grace Jones mixed up, as well as Michael Jordan and Magic Johnson.

So Rita really WASN’T dead all these years!? Sorry to hear about this. She played a profound role in MSTory by being in the infamous scene that led to every movie being screened in full before a riff. I actually watched the uncut sequence in “Sidehackers” recently, for the very first time. It really is disturbing, even for 1969/70.

Sorry to hear that she was a victim of rape/assault in her real life. That is truly awful and makes her infamous role in Sidehackers a little harder to swallow.

As time goes on, and as I get a little older, I keep coming back to “Sidehackers” as one of the better MST3K episodes of its era. The riff is outstanding. Its genuinely laugh out loud funny and they seem to be engaged with the pure stupidity of the movie. Its up there with “Catalina Caper”, “Wild Rebels” and “Godzilla vs the Sea Monster” as the best shows of season 2.

If you have the time and the Doritos, it’s important and rewarding to screen every MST movie in full. Seeing the entire movie makes so much difference in deciding whether any given “show” is truly stupid or merely misjudged because of the cuts for time. Moreover, any entire movie originally rated R should be watched very, VERY carefully. *cough* Deathstalker *cough*.
