Joel McHale is one of the few comics out there that really has that MST-style of humor. “The Soup” is one of the funniest shows on TV right now.

I can’t wait!

Yep. Red Dawn is made for riffing. Now if only the teens in the movie had had Crow and TS in their tank to lead them to Messina (I mean, liberate the we3stern U.S. from the U.S.S.R.).

Isn’t there going to be be a Red Dawn remake in the next year or two? I thought they’d hold off on the RT just a little while longer; or has there already been a special edition DVD of the original in anticipation?
Regardless, should be awesome. It’s one of those movies that I always try to get into, until I’m stonewalled by all the character development coming strait out of Cliff’s Notes for ’80s Melodrama, and just how dated it became a mere 7 years later. In other words, couldn’t be be more perfect for riffin’.
Did the USSR produce any similar movies about Americans invading them, or were they too busy making the kind of epics we associate with MST3K?

I lived through the Reagan era of the cold war. This always struck me as one of the absolute worst anti-communist propaganda movies of the decade.
Commie Hondurans get airlifted over Colorado so they can parachute down and shoot up a high school? We’re shooting up our own high schools just fine, thank you very much. And then the invading commies fail to notice the nightly campfires of the teenagers living in a local campground? And then they end the movie with a narrator saying, “Eventually the war ended, as all wars do.” No kidding. Could you be a little more vague? No point in mentioning who won the war or anything.
This is gonna be fun. Just remember, “Pain don’t hurt”.

@The Bolem: They released a special edition of the movie last year, so this is pretty good timing.
Red Dawn is one of, if not the, most violent movies ever made, and it really depressed me when I saw it on TV when I was much younger. I hope Mike and Joel (awesome choice for a co-riffer) can chop it up nicely.
I’d love to see them riff on Delta Force soon

hmmmmm…. I may have to get this

I don’t have a single Rifftrax DVD, but with Joel McHale as a guest riffer, I just may have to change that.

Buckeyes!! Equal time, ya know…

Finally an interesting choice! I’ve been lax on my RiffTrax purchases (shorts excluded) since Casino Royale, but I’m watching this.

Sounds good. As for Red Dawn, I still like it better than Invasion U.S.A. The one from MST3K, not the Chuck Norris movie.

Hooooooooly cow, it’s like they went into my brain or something. I saw Joel McHale perform in Reno in December, and got his autograph and a pic with him. He’s hilarious, can’t wait for this one.

Holy cow that’s awesome! Joel McHale??!?!? Let’s hope he mentions the appearance on The Soup! Exclamation point!

Good choice.

@justin
So Casablanca wasn’t an interesting choice for you? Frankly, I think they hit a whole row of interesting choices right after the last Harry Potter they did.

I saw it with my dad on a summer vacation in Door County. It made me sick due to the violence but go figure on another trip “Full Metal Jacket” didn’t disturb me.
Well I’ll have a cup of deer’s blood while eating the heart just awaiting the release.

Maybe Mike will stop but the Soup. Remeber when Crow and Senior Sock fought? Good Times. Good times.

That comment of mine did sound a little more snarky (?) than I meant it too. Inflection doesn’t always come through in typing. This is why I stay off message boards. “The Room” was a surprise, too.

So I see there are two different DVD’s out there. A “regular” and a recent special edition. Is there any difference in the actual movie between the two? Or two ask the question a different way will the RiffTrax sync with only one of the other or doesn’t matter. Is Connor lurking out there with the answer?

FINALLY! Oh my God. This was the excuse I used to justify my purchase of the DVD last year. No more guilt!

@ Dan
Either one should be fine, but since the newly-released special edition is probably the most widely-available, you’d be better off buying that one if you don’t have a copy yet.

Only because I feel it’s important enough that it bears repeating….ahem…

Joel McHale and Mike Nelson???? If only the Sklar Brothers were available this would be our Woodstock!

Or as me and my friends joked, you can really screw with somebody by saying “Joel’s doing a RiffTrax with Mike!”

That’s a long sample. It’s good though. AVENGE ME!!!!!!!!!! AVENGE ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, I hope “Mike and Joel” + “MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 MEETS RED DAWN” doesn’t get so confusing that it adds up to a frivilous lawsuit betwixt our favorite voices. Nah…
The sample was good enough to get my hopes up for a truly inspired roasting of the opening paratrooper scene and non-ending.
Maybe this is a bit off topic, but in that season 1 Simpsons ep where Homer gets mistaken for Bigfoot and shot with a tranq dart, he does an homage to the end of this scene, right? Or am I just grasping at false connections?

That was a good, long sample. But while I like Joel McHale, his voice is a bit too close to Mike’s voice for me. It reminded me of that Tron sample that way, although here it is worse because I obviously know what Mike freakin Nelson sounds like.

So glad RiffTrax got around to this movie at last! I couldn’t stand it when this movie came out way back in the Eighties! This film is so ripe for getting ripped on then! I thought Patrick Swayze could have battled with the invading Soviets by dancing his way to freedom! Hint Hint, shades of a “(Let’s Have) A Patrick Swayze Christmas” then!

We watched this one on Saturday night (July 4) with friends and everyone loved it. We had all seen the movie before, but that was like 20 years ago. Truly great riffs!

Glad you liked it, Creepygirl. Joel is a huge MST3k fan, and so we’re really looking forward to him riffing with us again.

I watched the first half of it, but couldn’t stand the volume inconsistencies. Joel McHale’s voice tended to get really really quiet at times, and there was no way to properly balance the Rifftrax and the movie. I’ll have to re-author it, compressing the hell out of both the movie and the commentary.
