Gilbert Gottfried, RIP

New York City — Gilbert Gottfried, the brash comedian with the grating voice, died here April 12 of a rare genetic muscle disorder. He was 67.

He had type II myotonic dystrophy, a kind of muscular dystrophy and had been battling it for some time. The cast of Broadway’s “Aladdin” dedicated its Tuesday night performance to late comedian.

MSTies will remember that he was mentioned in the well-remembered “Joey the Lemur” sketch in episode 210- KING DINOSAUR.

The AP has the story.

He was also mentioned in Episode 706- LASERBLAST, just before the SOL crashed into that field of Star Babies.

He was also mentioned in “Pumaman” re the guy “in the firetruck for “USA Up All Night!” ;-)

For a while, at least, he was known as the guy who talked about mas+urba+ion (unsure of the forum will “allow” me to spell out that word) for several minutes on the 43rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards TV Special (1991); I don’t remember any of his exact words, but I recall that that is in fact a thing that he did. He later noted:

“When I was a presenter at the [43rd Annual Primetime] Emmy Awards, they didn’t give me a script. They just said, “Go out there and have fun.” And I figured, “What’s more fun than mas+urba+ion?””

    Thank you, Google. :-)

That was in the theater not a host segment, right?

Correct, and upon further recollection, he was imitated but not mentioned by name. My error.

  5. And his squinting graven image was even worshipped as a stone idol, in…the temple of Manos, was it?

  6. This is one of my favorite Gilbert moments. And it’s definitely safe for work, it’s from Hollywood Squares.

  7. And while his hilarious imitation of an unfunny Jerry Seinfeld isn’t on YouTube (“Ever notice how we tie our shoes?…Whyyyyy do we tie our shoes?”), we do have his imitation of a desperately unfunny Andrew Dice Clay for posterity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftMb7wLrqsw

(And I’m in a wheelchair with something similar to what Gottfried got, so I can sympathize.)
