But I want to ask you all how you’d like to proceed, in terms of season seven and “MST3K: the movie.” What order would you like me to do them in? Seems to me we have three choices: Do the movie and then season seven (seeing as how the action of the movie seems to take place before the arrival of Pearl), do season seven and then the movie (as we have it listed in the current episode guide, or do them in chronological order: episodes 701 through 705, then the movie, then 706?
Please vote in the poll below. The poll will close on Saturday, June 20.

I have a database of episodes (also including Film Crew, Cinematic Titanic and RiffTrax), and have The Movie as episode “707”, though it also has ‘first air’ date, so can be sorted by date rather than episode.

Didn’t the movie come out in the theaters before season seven aired? How can 701-705, then the movie, then 706 be chronological?

beth563,
Season 7 began airing on Feb. 3, 2006 with the non-Turkey Day version of episode 701 (the TD version aired the previous Thanksgiving). Episode 705 aired on March 2, then the movie was released on April 19, and episode 706 aired on May 18.

While its not in the correct chronological date of airing, I always have put the movie ahead of season 7 since that’s the only place it fits within the show’s timeline.

I don’t count the movie as part of the continuity, so I vote for Season 7 first and then the movie. The movie has different sets, and thus a different look than the show, and, while good, is not an ideal example of MST3K.
Season 7 has some good stuff in it, from Paul Chaplin as Sandy, to Deathstalker and Toblerone.

As someone who actually loathes Season 7, I’d rather the movie come first. With the exception of “Night of the Blood Beast”, which started the season off strong, and “Laserblast” which ended it well, the rest is awful. The lack of focus brought on by the movie’s production is painfully evident, and Frank’s absence is a HUGE void. “Brute Man” is a bore, “Escape 2000” is one of the all-time worst episodes, almost devoid of anything funny, and “Deathstalker” is just plain dull. Thank God the first SciFi season was so strong.

I enjoy all of season 7. That said, I don’t really have a preference. Is this important?

In terms of chronology, the movie kinda has to come first, since Dr. Forrester appears to be alone in Deep 13, meaning it’s gotta be sometime between when Frank left and when Pearl moved in. So, it really only makes sense.
I get this odd feeling that’s how they would’ve aired it if they had the option. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’ll be off in the corner, repeating to myself, “It’s just a show, I should really just relax”. :-)

Voted for the movie first, but I can’t say I mind whatever order you decide to do it in.

As I say about a lot of things, I wasn’t “there” to observe the actual order, but I always thought that Dr. F by himself = after Frank’s departure, but before Pearl moved in.

I say chronological but honestly, any way is good.

I feel like the movie first, then Season Seven, flows more naturally. I can’t say why, it just does. Maybe it is how Doctor Forrester’s alone for it.

The movie was made first, therefore it should be reviewed first.
Sorry, I’m just OCD about those sort of things.

The Movie first for me as it was produced before Season Seven and Frank was originally in the script, but then left. Dr F was the sole Mad in the Movie, so it feels more logical. Pearl hadn’t shown up yet, Frank had left, I also think if nothing else “Assignment Venezuela” could have been the short to bring the shows time up to an average 90 minutes. Don’t know when the short was made but the length of the short fits it too perfect.

Assignment: Venezuela was actually made for an uncompleted MST3k CD-ROM (only the FUTURE of MULTIMEDIA technology, you know) along with (I think) Century 21 Calling. Don’t think it had any link to the movie…though now I’m kind of interested in seeing an expanded version with A:V spliced in along with one of the missing host segments.

Reply to Josh #16:
“Assignment: Venezuela” was the only one that was made by itself. “Century 21 Calling” was attached to episode 906, The Space Children (with Jackie Coogan in a femme robe)
As a sidebar, Venezuela should be reviewed along with The Movie

I say movie first, then Season 7. It makes sense chronologically – Frank leaves in Season 6, Forrester is alone for the movie, then Pearl arrives in Season 7. I’ve always believed that the movie belongs between Seasons 6 and 7 in the show’s chronology, regardless of when it was actually released. I know whenever I watch the entire run of the show in order (which I’ve done more than once), I watch the movie between “Samson vs. the Vampire Women” and “Night of the Blood Beast”.
And I wouldn’t say no to throwing “Assignment: Venezuela” in there next week too. It’s a good short, but when else would we get to discuss it?

There were two shorts riffed for the CD-ROM game: “Assignment: Venezuela” and “Mylar: What’s It To You?” Unfortunately, “Mylar” may be lost forever. Neither Trace (who was in charge of the CD-ROM project) nor Jim know what happened to it.

Oh, crap! I pushed the wrong button amd voted for Ahmadinejad! Again!

I agree that Assignment: Venezuela should be reviewed alone. But where should it fit in a movie timeline? It’s especially interesting since it’s basically a movie-long short (if thaqt makes any sense).

Thanks for the clarification. I don’t know where my brain was when I posted that. I was getting season 7 and 8 mixed up.
Can I change my vote, then?

the movie first. Yes! a child, NO!

Oh, I’ve seen that Mylar short… one of the stranger industrials I’ve run across.

There was a CD-ROM MST3K game?

I voted for Season 7 first, then the movie, but whatever the choice is is fine with me. It’s not like we’re voting for a politician here.

Unless, of course, it’s Peter Graves running for president after graduating from the University of Minnesota (presumably with a major in Clone Studies).

“There was a CD-ROM MST3K game?”
From what I can tell, no. But there was almost a CD-ROM…

klisch,
There almost was a CD-ROM that would have contained trivia, a mock-up of the SOL, a “DOOM-like flight simulator game,” cheating chess and solitare games, and the above two mentioned shorts. Unfortunately, the project ran into trouble when Voyager, the company that was going to release it, began having financial troubles. Then when Trace left, it was cancelled completely.

Chronological. Pearl was just out shopping when Dr Forrester sent ‘This Island Earth’ to Mike and the bots.

The people who want the movie to come first are a bunch of socialist liberals who want to destroy America and what it all stands for. [/O’Reilly]
By which I mean, I don’t really care, though in my mind, the movie came after the season.

Episodes 701-through-705, then the movie, then Laserblast was my vote.
\I look forward to having more votes on MST3Kinfo, too. That felt great !

Man, I can’t wait to see the entry for The Movie. There’s so much trivia, from the first draft script’s stuff, to the press kit, to the horror story of getting it made, the original crappy DVD going out of release, the fanmade Special Edition, just so much stuff to cover! Really looking forward to it guys! :D

Thanks again to Sampo for doing these recaps. They never fail to brighten my workweek. As the philospher once said, “we like it very much!”

MST3K:TM was okay, but would have been even better had BBI been allowed to choose the movie to riff on. “This Island Earth” was actually alittle above their standard of bad movies.
