RIP Jim MacGeorge

Actor, voice actor, puppeteer and stand-up comedian Jim MacGeorge died Jan. 16. He was 92.

His puppeteering was mainly for the “Beany and Cecil” children’s TV show, “Time for Beany.” It originally starred Daws Butler and Stan Freberg and when they quit, MacGeorge took over their roles and many other characters.

He was also heard in dozens of other cartoon shows including “Kwicky Koala,” “Yogi’s Space Race,” “The Flintstones,” “Duck Tales,” “The Bionic Six” and many others. He also worked for a time as a writer for Jay Ward, mainly on “Fractured Flickers” and the “Super Chicken” cartoons.

MSTies will recognize him as Mac the cop in the movie in episode 404- TEENAGERS FROM OUTER SPACE.

This blog has an appreciation.

Thanks to Duane and Tim for the heads up.

Those weren’t dad jokes. They were great grandad jokes. A lot of puckering was involved in blowing the dust off of them. Ha! Mr. MacGeorge had them rolling, though. RIP

  2. Interestingly, imdb notes several Beany and Cecil references in MST’s Saga of the Viking Women, Human Duplicators, and Merlin’s Shop eps.
Normally, I’d go see if the references (none of which I remember) are in the theater or the host segments, but the Beany and Cecil entry also talks about a reference in a Sam and Max episode, and I’d forgotten ALL about Sam and Max. So, immediately off to the Forbidden Places to see if I can get hold of any Sam and Maxes.

Oh, wow, I hadn’t thought about Super Chicken in years! I love being able to see the person behind my childhood TV-watching experiences, but I admit I never connected him with an MST3k episode, and never would have recognized him from Teenagers from Outer Space. RIP, Mr. MacGeorge.

Call for Super Chicken (bawk bawk bawk!)

    Caaaall for Super Chicken –

As a kid I didn’t understand a lot of the subtext jokes on Super Chicken, but as an adolescent I understood every single one on Benny Hill. You live and you grow, I guess.

If you watch the beginning of the Beany & Cecil cartoon show (You Tube), it does remind you of MST3K. The squinty kid with the tuft hair, the gangly, Gypsy-like Cecil, The Crow (literally), the snarky. mustachioed villain, Dishonest John, et als, all aboard the good ship Leakin Lena (which is Not shaped like a dog bone, unfortunately). R.I.P. Mr MacGeorge
