Weekend Discussion Thread: Favorite Callback

One of the mainstays of MST3K is references to previous episodes. Which one(s) really tickle you?

My pick: The melodious “Starfighters” theme.

What’s yours?

Almost any reference to Trumpy makes me laugh, but I have to say the one in “Beginning of the End” is probably the best. It just comes out of nowhere. In second place would be in “Hercules Against the Moonmen”… when Trumpies attack!

    I forgot about Arf-Keeba! That one’s hilarious.

  2. I just keep finding reasons to come back to this, but this time it’s for a callback I WISH they did and I use more often than you might think:

“What’s going to become of us now?” – The stinger line for The Day The Earth Froze.

As mentioned by stephy the babysitter, my fave would be “Like father, like son, think about it, won’t you? Thank you.” It’s so brilliant yet nonsensical at the same time!

To #83: I agree!!! Please, Mr. Sampo, can we have that one for a WDT? Help each other identify the obscure riffs? I bet collectively we Satellite News MSTies have lots of different areas of expertise, or at least lots of diverse interests, or we’re just weird, which results in creativity

#96 – We ALL know Dropo was the laziest man on Mars, but Joel does say it about Torgo in Manos, when he’s just lying there. That’s the call back part.

Unless you were just kidding.

And #92, maybe that amusement park did have a part in why they say “do you want to go faster”, but I still think it has to do with “Something Wicked This Way Comes” because Crow always says it in a very sinister tone.

I love Mike’s “Go ahead on” callback to Final Justice when he’s gambling with Pearl at the beginning of Hamlet.

You think you can take me?

  10. I just picked up on a fairly subtle one: When Mike descends down to earth at the beginning of Werewolf, he’s wearing a helmet with the “invisible electromagnetic shield” from 12 to the Moon!

“You are ordered to leave the Bronx!” from Laserblast. Laserblast had a lot of good ones, Eegah, Red Zone Cuba… it was like a callbackapalooza.

“Oh great, Mitchell’s here.” from Angel’s Revenge.

“El Santo!” from Wild World of Batwoman and Final Sacrifice.

  14. #88 – Nicias – Nice catch! I did catch the reference, since I watch ‘Santa’ a lot, but I didn’t know what it meant. Thanks! BTW, I think that was also used in another episode. Anyone remember which one?

#114, Edwin – I’m wracking my brain trying to remember another time they used “Terpsichore!” but I’m afraid I’m coming up blank. I don’t have all the episodes (close, but not quite), so it may be from one of the dozen or so I haven’t seen. Anybody out there know?

Doing another quick search, it would seem that the goddess Terpsichore may not be as obscure as I thought, at least not in the acting world. Apparently she was portrayed by Rita Hayworth and Olivia Newton-John (in the disastrous film Xanadu). My knowledge of both mythology and drama is limited, but I still think the film was being too clever for it’s own good (if such a thing can be said about “The Human Duplicators). For the longest time it sounded to me like the actor was saying “Turk’s Hickory.” Still, the clues were there: when the blind woman rescues the secret agent from the dungeon, he says “Terpsichore! What are you doing down here in Hades?”

I say “Kitty!” almost every time I see a cat–since I own one, that’s quite a lot. “Watch out for snakes!” is probably my other favorite callback, since the movie portion it’s referencing is so ridiculous. It never fails to elicit a chuckle.
