NASHVILLE–Mac Davis, the country music artist and songwriter behind some of Elvis Presley’s most indelible recordings, died at a hospital here Sept. 29 following heart surgery. He was 78.
Davis became a country and adult contemporary crossover star with solo hits like “Baby Don’t Get Hooked on Me.” In 1974, he was named Entertainer of the Year by the Academy of Country Music, beating out nominees like Loretta Lynn and Merle Haggard. That same year, he was nominated for Entertainer of the Year by the Country Music Association but lost to Charlie Rich.
MSTies will recall that Joel mentioned him in a host segment in episode 207- WILD REBELS.
Specifically, when Joel sang a love song to Gypsy, and “felt sorta like” Mac singing to Miss Piggy on the Muppet Show.
Mac actually wasn’t a bad movie actor, either, although “The Sting II” isn’t the best material to judge by.
Mac Davis was a highly regarded song writer, too. He wrote hits for Helen Reddy (RIP) and many others. To the best of my knowledge he did not write anything for Digger Smolken. RIP
“North Dallas Forty” would be a better choice.
the The Sting II is not a bad film, its not great, but still good (like one of my favorite films, Wild Geese 2, its still not as a good as The Wild Geese, but still)
In Lubbock, Tx, the cows and the wind cry out at the loss of a native son to the Great Beyond. The birds have stopped flyjng. The fish are quiet and break not the surface of the water. There is sadness in the air.
This will continue for a while.
Gradually we will forget we all will follow him.

R.I.P. and stuff, but…
“MSTies will recall that …”
Again, I think that would be better phrased as “MSTies MIGHT recall that …”
The fish in Lubbock are saying “What the flipper are we doing in the Texas panhandle?”. There is already a movement afoot to put up a monument to Mac. Probably not far from Buddy Holly’s. Thanks, Chief.
He did one of my late father’s favorite songs, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WTrMuZOZvM. Let’s just say my father had a rather interesting sense of humor.
Nah, I say: have the courage of your convictions. Be optimistic. They WILL recall and if they didn’t before, they are recalling now.
When I was younger, I could remember anything, whether it had happened or not; but my faculties are decaying now and soon I shall be so I cannot remember any but the things that never happened. — Mark Twain
