Casting
According to stand-up comedian and future Mystery Science Theater 3000 star Joel Hodgson, he was asked to be one of the stars of the proposed series. Hodgson turned the offer down after telling the network he didn’t think the material was good. The network raised their offer, thinking it was a bargaining ploy. Because of this, Hodgson felt Hollywood was shallow and quit the industry until 1987, when he created MST3K.
Shooting
Fox met McKeon on set and the two of them dated for a while, as well as starring in another TV movie Poison Ivy.

…OHHHhhhh! (And he thought he gave up after “Square Pegs”?)
I was wondering, first, why B&MJ would do a title without “Woman”, “Lady”, “Bride” or “Sister” in it, and second, why they would go through the entire page description without turning it into one long self-conscious cynical joke about their own HS years.
Then I looked closer at the cover, and was not disappointed.

While director Ron Ameteau wasn’t involved in any actual MST3K films, he did direct and produce a 1961 TV movie remake of Daddy-O. Crystal Bernard (Anne-Marie Conklin) was Carrie Brown in Master Ninja II. Elinor Donahue (Mrs. Franklin) was Mary Lee Morgan in Girls Town. Steve Franken (Dr. Fritz Hauptmann) was Henry Maitland in Stranded in Space, Danny McKee in The Time Travelers, and Henry McDade in Avalanche. Steve Fuji (Student) was a motorcycle mechanic in City Limits. Director of photography Jack Whitman was also DP for Code Name: Diamond Head
Fun Fact: The Robot was portrayed by Jerry Maren, who had been the last surviving Wizard of Oz Munchkin (he was one of the Lollipop Guild dancers), having died in 2018.

Mary Jo your high school yearbook photo brought a nostalgic smile to my face. You must have been at the end of the ironed straight hair phase and the beginning of the Farrah hair flip phase. Alas, that was also about the end of the miniskirt phase. Sigh…

Probably for the same reason that they have riffed Speak Up, Andrew!, Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon, A Very Merry Riff-mas, Strange Impersonation, Squeak the Squirrel, and other titles that don’t fit your preconceived notions. Also probably for the same reason that the guys have titles that doesn’t have “Man,” “Guy,” “Son,” or “Brother” in the title.
Back to “High School, U.S.A.,” I’ll probably pass since I’m not a fan of riffing movies that are comedies to begin with, plus this one may have too much ’80s even for me.

Misogyny rears its ugly (pathetic) head again, and again the mods allow it. It’s actually pretty revealing.

Assuming most of the cover shown was original, with Bridget and Mary Jo’s parts the only additions…
Ah! So that’s where Community got the idea for their first season DVD set cover!

That’s their best cover yet.

Comparing it to the poster on IMDB, the two big changes (aside from the obvious) is that for some reason a different picture of Todd Bridges was inserted and Dawn Wells had originally been in the spot where Bridget’s picture is. Presumably they wanted to keep her in due to her being Mary Ann on Gilligan’s Island.

Someone posted a code here a while back that blocks his posts. It’s wonderful. If I can figure out a way to share it, I will. There are apparently 11 comments here, but only 9 show up for me. It’s Christmas every day.

I’ll definitely be using that code to block Eric’s posts and make the site more readable again, thanks to the helpful person who made that.
